How long is too long to be engaged?

Hey everyone! I’m super new to this app (literally stumbled upon it today), and although my fiancé and I have known each other for 7 years now (dating for 1 year), and got engaged this Christmas Eve, I’m wondering if July 2020 is too soon to plan for our wedding date? Hey everyone! I’m super new to this app (literally stumbled upon it today), and although my fiancé and I have known each other for 7 years now (dating for 1 year), and got engaged this Christmas Eve, I’m wondering if July 2020 is too soon to plan for our wedding date? We’re young, and our careers have just started launching this past year alone in 2019, so our savings is still pretty bare (it was a bad year for us both honestly, one awful thing after another).
I know weddings are famously known to be expensive, and we’re also hoping to move out of our apartment for a house sometime this year. I’m trying to be reasonable and think of finances. If we get married in 2020, I feel like we’ll have to postpone our house-buying dreams for another year or two to re-save the money spent on our wedding, and vice versa if we get a home this year and have to postpone the wedding.
I feel like 2022 is so far away though, and is a long time to be engaged. Is that silly, or is it kind of strange to hold off on the actual wedding for that long of a period? Thanks for your time!

It's not silly to postpone one thing or the other when it comes to the wedding, me and my fiance have been engaged since January 1st 2019 we are getting married August 15th 2020 as well I mentioned postponing it, he's not a fan of it LOL but you have to do what's right for you your family and your financial situation, if that means pushing the wedding back few months then so be it, you guys will have to look at the financial bottom line and what type of wedding you really want meaning after all is your wedding so if you wanted to be extravagant you need to stop and Save if you want me to be casual then do it sooner but put priorities are most important to you guys, ask what way you'll make it as a team, you need to discuss it or figure out what's top priority in your guys's life buying a house or spending money on a wedding cuz the wedding can come anytime but your dream home may not be there forever.

I got in engaged in October and we are having our wedding May 2021. I don’t think it’s long at all. Plus it’s gives you that time to really save up and more time to plan.

Congratulations! To be honest it depends on your budget and what you would like on your big day as the others have commented. I got engaged on Christmas (25/12/19) and we're aiming for Feb 2023. But it's because of the amount of things we want to have in our wedding and what we want to accomplish, and not to metion it's going to be in another country and so on and so forth. But really I think it comes down to what are you willing to do.

Maybe do something small now and then a big wedding later. Because remember you have to live after your wedding which is only for one day.

Recently my coworker told me her awesome story about how she planned her wedding in just 8 days!! With over 100 ppl. 😱😱 she said it was so relaxed because they had absolutely no expectations because it was pulled together so last minute and were just happy when anything worked out!

My engagement on the other hand is 2.5 years - we bought a house shortly after getting engaged. I see no issue with enjoying being engaged and saving up money 😊 although I no longer correct people when they call my fiancé my husband Haha

I just got engaged this New Year's Eve and we're planning for summer of 2022. (So 2 years) it just fits best in our time line then. I was also worried that might be too long but realistically that mak s it easier to find an available venue and get everything else in order. A friend of mine just got married and it took her 1 and 1/2 years to get everything in order and she had no reservations about the date. Honestly, there's no need to rush. Take your time and when it falls into place you'll know.

I say try to go for 2022. Wedding planning is stressful enough without rushing yourself. Your wedding should be all about what's best for you and your future spouse. I am planning my wedding for either 2021 or 2022,and I got engaged in May of 2019. A longer than usual engagement isn't a big deal to me personally. I'd rather wait, save up, and do the wedding the way I want instead of having to rush it. Best of luck no matter what you choose!

It's perfectly ok to live in an apartment newly married and save some money. My fiance and I are doing that and we aren't even spending that much on the wedding.

I think you can plan a wedding for july 2020. Its doable. But be prepared for it to be fast passed.

I waited almost 18 from our engagement to get married. All the budgeting planning and ideas that I love then changed my mind....lol I will say invite who truly can't live without sharing this day with! I started with almost 300!...then saw the price tagSmiley surprise then hacked the list to 90. Most of my decor was bought off Facebook in a wedding resale page and when everything Halloween was on clearance, I feel a home is what you make of it. If you both have been dreaming of the house of your own maybe you'll find and amazing one to host a wedding!

    Good Luck!

Honestly a wedding is a day, a marriage is a lifetime. I’ve been struggling a lot lately with not getting married for a while. But if you start off unprepared (which don’t get me wrong you’re never going to be fully prepared) then it will be hard to enjoy a wedding or honeymoon seeing a price tag on every ceremony or decoration. Enjoy being engaged for a bit. If it was a matter of you two not wanting to commit and putting the wedding off that’s one thing. Just enjoy this next phase of your life and prepare for your marriage with a new house and some savings Smiley smile

We got engaged February 2018and he found out he was getting deployed so we just got married at the court house 2 weeks later. We didn’t end up having a wedding. So we decided to have a ceremony and reception when we get back to the states so we can plan.

Two years is not too long. My fiance and I decided on a long engagement
to allow us to pay it off in a timely manner. If you are paying it by
yourself and not in a rush to get married I suggest having an engagement
longer then a year. Looking at venues so early also allows for lower
rates because the cost of living hasn't been calculated for the date. I
saved $12 per person at one venue because I started planning so early.

I have been with my fiance for 4 years, engaged for one of those years. Our wedding isn't until 2022. I don't think pushing it back is a bad idea. We've had bad things after bad thing as well and it is stressful financially which is why we are waiting until 2022. It gives us time to get situated financially and career wise. If you're going to buy a house sometime this year I would personally wait until maybe next year. What's a few more months? People ask me why I'm waiting so long and honestly neither of us are going anywhere so why do we need to rush our wedding. We've been together 4 years, waiting until 2022 but we have our whole lives to spend together and all that time you figure out a wedding too. I think most people stress to get married as soon as they get engaged and make others feel like they have to rush too. I think it's perfect to wait.

Me and my fiance got engaged 3/24/ 18 and we aren't getting married until 10/22/2022. Mainly because we got engaged young and we are wanting to save up for our wedding first. I thinks it's perfectly fine honestly there still plenty you can sit there and plan for within 2 years and it doesnt feel as hectic.

I just got engaged on Christmas and we decided on late in 2022 for many reasons but primarily personal preference. Planning a wedding is a lot of work and depending on what you want, how many you accommodate, amongst many other factors I feel as though length of an engagement is based on each individual couple.

We have big families, accommodations for them will be pricey. I am looking at switching up my career, another reason we are waiting. We like even numbers so naturally we gravitated towards an even number year. We have been friends 15 years, dated 4 1/2 before our engagement, so really wants another 2 years ? Also dress shopping is something I want to have plenty of time for.

We've been together 4 years this past December. We got engaged NYE 2018. Much like you, we just graduated college and got into "adult jobs" if you could even call them that. We don't have careers established yet. We currently live in a 1 bedroom apartment and have goals to move into a house soon. Originally we set our wedding date for May 2020 (this was in April 2019), then this past November we decided to push our wedding to December 2020 for much of the reason's you're considering. This caused us to be engaged just shy of two years. Everyone will tell you this, but trust me when I say THE TIME WILL FLY. Seriously, I feel like I blinked and it was gone. 2022 will give you some peace of mind and it really will come quickly.

It’s good to have 10-12 months to plan anyways. Maybe go for the in between. Instead of 2020 or 2022 try for middle or end of 2021?! (If possible) I understand the financial issues though. I got engaged on Valentine’s Day 2019 and our wedding is Sep.5,2020 to give us time to prepare! As we have two toddlers 1&2 most of our money is spent on them so we buy things little buy little. And my father bought my dress so that helped too 😊

First off Congratulations! We just got engaged 12/25/19 and as much as we would’ve loved to get married winter 2020 it just wasn’t the best decision financially for us. We decided on June 2021. That gives us 18 months to save and have time to strategically plan our wedding to how we want it and not have to rush. Take however much time you need and don’t rush because you feel like you have to.
