How long is too long to be engaged?

Hey everyone! I’m super new to this app (literally stumbled upon it today), and although my fiancé and I have known each other for 7 years now (dating for 1 year), and got engaged this Christmas Eve, I’m wondering if July 2020 is too soon to plan for our wedding date? Hey everyone! I’m super new to this app (literally stumbled upon it today), and although my fiancé and I have known each other for 7 years now (dating for 1 year), and got engaged this Christmas Eve, I’m wondering if July 2020 is too soon to plan for our wedding date? We’re young, and our careers have just started launching this past year alone in 2019, so our savings is still pretty bare (it was a bad year for us both honestly, one awful thing after another).
I know weddings are famously known to be expensive, and we’re also hoping to move out of our apartment for a house sometime this year. I’m trying to be reasonable and think of finances. If we get married in 2020, I feel like we’ll have to postpone our house-buying dreams for another year or two to re-save the money spent on our wedding, and vice versa if we get a home this year and have to postpone the wedding.
I feel like 2022 is so far away though, and is a long time to be engaged. Is that silly, or is it kind of strange to hold off on the actual wedding for that long of a period? Thanks for your time!

Why not wait to buy a house after the wedding? That way it’s like starting a new life together. That’s what we want to do. Our wedding is set for July 2020 and we would like to buy a house some time after that. That way we can use all our new wedding gifts , in a new place. Or you always set the wedding for 2021. That way it’s somewhere in the middle but think waiting almost 3 years is a very long time especially since you’ve already been dating for awhile. So much can change in that time period with planning. I honestly don’t think I could wait that long. But it’s up to you and your budget. But I’d opt for wedding first, then a house. Because you could also start a “home fund” instead of a honeymoon fund. I’ve seen some people do that. If you buy a house first, you would’ve already bought stuff you’d need for the house so a registry would be pointless to me. But I’d say discuss your budget then decide.

FH and I will end up with a 29 month engagement. He proposed 06/2018 and we will get married 11/2020. We mostly picked 2020 to ensure he had graduated with his masters degree (required for his work) but to also ensure we had plenty of time to save. In 05/2019 we decided to buy a house. I don't think we physically or mental could have done both in the same year. Our thoughts on push out the wedding was simple- we have the rest of our lives together, why do we need to rush the wedding? I understand there are a lot of outside reasons to get married like taxes and stuff, but we didn't let that influence our decision. We live together and have a pup together, so getting married will just make it legal.

More time = more time to plan = less stress

    You do you!

It’s totally up to you, however, planning a wedding in 6 months is going to be stressful and you’re going to have to make sacrifices. Lots of people will already have plans(vacations, trips, etc.) and many vendors will already be booked.

I really don't think it's far off at all. Time flies by.
Husband and I got married in 2015 in a court house, bought a house, had kids and are now comfortably planning a reception party on our 5 year anniversary... Smiley smile It's a vow renewal and I don't have a registry or a bridal party - but those things I wouldn't want anyway if I had been planning a wedding 4 years ago. For us it was the best decision ever, having a house and being comfortable financially (our careers advanced since 2015) takes a lot of stress out of planning. Think of it this way..you will blow this money on one night but then have to rent for another 2 years... or...buy a house, make it a home, grow professionally and financially...and then have no problems throwing yourselves a nice party. Plus it's fun being engaged. You can really savor it.

I don't think that 2022 is too far away. It would give you time to save up some money for emergencies and start slowly saving up for a wedding. You should do what you feel most comfortable doing.

I got engaged 11/9/19 and am getting married 7/10/20 and we haven’t had any issues. However, my parents are paying for a lot of the wedding so we were in a good place financially and had been together 4 years. You can plan a wedding in that amount of time, but without the chance to save up some more money, you probably won’t be able to get everything you want and it may be more stressful! Why can’t you get married in 2021? I would hold off on buying a house for now and you could save for a year, get married in 2021, and buy a house in 2022.

My fiancé and I have been together for 6 and a half years and got engaged September 2nd, 2017. Our wedding is set for May 2nd, 2020. No such thing as being engaged for too long. Take it at your own pace and give yourself enough time to be financially stable and plan the wedding of your dreams.

What’s more important to you? A wedding or a house? My fiancé and I just got into an apartment a few months ago and we decided that we want to get married first and then build a house. I know most people buy a house first but we have to work on little things regardless before we get a house anyway.

Girl! I feel the same! Just got engaged New Year’s Eve & we was thinking about planning end of July mid August of 2021 but we are also in the process of buying a house with in the next year or 2, we are currently living at my parents home. But I mentioned to him today that I feel as if it’s to much to try to buy a hole plus now plan a wedding, so I said something about 2022 for the wedding. Ugh I don’t know

I see no issue in that whatsoever!! I got engaged in March 2019 and my wedding is March 27th, 2021. I started planning about 3 weeks after getting engaged. FH and I are paying for everything ourselves so we needed plenty of time to save and plan!! I say, take as long as you need!! It's totally your choice!! There is no specific time line for engagements or wedding planning!! Do what is best for y'all and take as much time as you need!! Congratulations and good luck with everything!!

We got engaged 9-6-18 and are getting married 10-17-20, time flies and I cannot believe it is already 2020! We lived in our first house for a year before we got engaged, we’ve also been dating for 9 years. While I am not personally paying for my wedding I am so glad we decided to take a longer engagement. 2019 sucked, I am now almost done with graduate school and my fiancé’s father passed away last year after a long illness. Planning a wedding on top of all that is not easy! While I am so glad we are having a long engagement it’s all personal preference and what you want to do. Long or short engagement all that matters is that you two are there for one another.

Do what feels right for your situation! If you want to get your house and take your time to plan your fabulous wedding then do it! Don’t get pressured by family and friends asking when your date is. If waiting until 2022 is going to make you happy then go for it! Personally I got engaged in August and I’m getting married in July 2020 and I still feel rushed. Save yourself some bridal stress!!

There is a ton of sound advice on this thread about waiting and saving, but one thing I've learned is that life is short. Being engaged is fun and a beautiful thing, but dont wait too long. My fiancee and I got engaged 7/7/19. We decided to take a while to enjoy being engaged before stressing ourselves out about wedding planning. We were going to have a long engagement to give us time to save, but then, a close friend had a tragic, unexpected loss of their fiancee and after talking at length we decided not to wait to get married. I did extensive venue research, and on 12/22/19 I booked an incredibly beautiful venue lakeside on a golf course. Costing about $5,000, with everything included but the photographer, rings, and the attire, we are getting married 3/26/20. Not a lot of time, but we agreed we dont need a big fancy expensive wedding. As long as we are both standing up at that alter exchanging vows in front of our family and friends, it doesnt matter where we are or how much we spend, or what kind of linens or centerpiece decorate the table. We are getting married, and after that day, no matter what happens after we will be Mr and Ms Heathcock. Smiley smile

It's up to you what you want to do, I've been engaged since 01/16/19 and we don't plan on getting married until 05/21/21 because we know that we need to save up money because we are paying for most of the wedding ourselves. Thinking out into 2022 is really good thinking because you are thinking logically about what you need to save up for. I actually love having a long engagement because I have liked to savor the moment of being engaged, I would say soak up your status of being engaged because it's an awesome feeling and then start planning or at least have a few ideas in mind for your special day. Best of luck to you!
