HELP! Worried bridal store is lying. Have you seen this dress?? (Pics)

Desiree, on February 17, 2013 at 10:56 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 50

Hi ladies. I tried dresses on for the first time yesterday. One store I went to offered "designer" gowns at designer prices. I didn't get a good vibe from the start. Said my ideal budget was 900, with 200-300 in alterations - total 1200. I didn't think that was unreasonable, especiall if I bought a sample. "That will be a challenge," I was told. hpmh. I was allowed to select 4 gowns to try on. I fell in love with one - price 1200. When asked if I could buy the sample, they said yes, but only at 100 discount. WHAT!!?? THey said it was a new style and had been in the store only about 2 weeks. Still. Weird. THEN, I asked about designer and dress style. They told me "Unforgettable, Anita." OK, cool. Except, two of us searched for hours and came up with NOTHING under those names. I even clarified it wasn't Unforgettable by Bonny. Nope, she said. SO the store website says my budget is doable, but it's really not. SAYS you can buy samples at a discount, but discount is a joke (continued)

(Continued from post) ... PHotos weren't allowed, so we had to sneak one, as we suspected from the start the store wasn't being honest. (Seriously... she wouldn't even leave us alone for a second. We asked for a veil and at first she said they don't bring veils in until you've said this is "the one." How do you know without the veil????)

Sorry for the bad quality of the photo- and I look terrible.

But point is: I'm pretty sure they're lying about the designer. At best, they gave wrpng names so it can't be easily found. At worst, it's NOT a designer dress. It's hard to know. SO I'm asking you..... have ANY of you seen this dress? Taffeta, sweetheart neckline, tulle underskirt with lace appliques. Zip back with faux buttons. A-line. It's a plus size gown. Please let me know what you think. THanks!

Haha I like how you can see the no photo sign in the background. I can't do one on my phone but try a google image search.

I don't know about this particular gown, but check out Sophia Tolli's website. She has very similar designs.

BTW, I bought a sample gown, and got it for well over 2K under the listed price.

@Elizabeth -- we did all kinds of google searches, plus looked at dozens of designer sites. NOTHING.

@FutreMrs.West -- Yes. I actually had a good experience at David's Bridal, surprisingly. Jeanne at the Nashua store was great! I just liked this dress more than any other. Truthfully, I'd totally buy it if the store was willing to A)be honest B) Not try to tell me how to budget so I can afford something OVER my budget. I cut her off there. I told her I'm the biggest budgeter she'll ever meet and I'm all set with lessons on how to cut back on coffee from DDs. Not cool. C) Be honest about their business practices. I mean ... IF you actually sell designer dresses, why not let us see the labels? IF you are concerned about people underrcutting your prices by looking elsewhere for the same dress, that's understandable. BUT if your customer service is good enough, that wouldn't be a problem. Or perhaps offer a price match guarantee? IF you are lying about the designer of your dress ugh.

@Mrs. S -- I know, right? I nearly laughed when she offered 100 off, "if you buy today." What IS that? Add to the fact I'm 90 percent sure they outright lied about the designer and I'm pretty angry. Thanks for the tip on Sophia Tolli. I'll check it out!

I wouldn't buy there. Are there other stores in your area you can check out?

Does the bridal store have a website? Some times they list the names of the designers that they carry on their website.

Did you see a designer tag on the inside? Or did they cut it out?

Thanks, La-Kia D! :-) I loved it! But as Fluffy suggested, I don't want to buy from that store. Unfortunately, I can't track this down without designer at the very least. I will definitely try other stores. Just hoping to close the loop on my own in the meantime. I'm really disheartened about this.

Hi Hayley! Yes, they do have a website, but no list of designers. Suspect!

@Hayley... they cut them out of the ones I DID see -- the bridesmaids gown. For the bridal gowns themselves, the woman "helping" me wouldn't even really let me get my hands on them. She handled everything, including putting me IN the gowns.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience with trying on dresses... I don't understand why these bridal stores don't allow you to take pics and only try on 4 dresses..what!! What if you don't like any of the 4 dresses or you like 3 and are still unsure. That's why you take pictures.. I went to one bridal store where only 6 was aloud and I thought ok that's weird but I had never went dress shopping so I didn't know..I got my dress as a sample too and they had received it 2 months prior.. Basically I got it for half off the original price.. $100 dollars off is crazy.. I would complain and also look into the better business bureau.. Are you looking for that dress to buy elsewhere?

I would look at another store. I'm pretty sure they are not supposed to cut the designer tags OUT of the dresses.

The store I bought my dress at listed all the designer names On their website and when I had it narrowed down to 2, they took the designer BOOK out from behind the counter and Xeroxed the 2 pages with my dresses on them for me to take home.

Most stores DO advertise what designers they carry. They make deals with the designer that they can be the only shop to sell that designer within "x" number of miles.

@Val -- I'd love to go elsewhere to get the dress, but without the actual designer name, I am having a hard time.

@Hayley -- I know. It doesn't make any sense unless A) they are so afraid that, if you can find the dress elsewhere you will, and they'll lose the sale or B) they are lying about the designers and therefore CAN'T list them. I just want the dress, but I won't buy it unless I know for sure it's what they say it is! And it would be WONDERFUL if they gave me the information like they gave you.

They usually cut out the designer tags so that you can't shop them, but as Hayley said, they're NOT supposed to.

First of all nice dress, I use to work in a bridal shop, I know a lot of shops don't like you taking pics because you go in to try on dresses in their shop and take a pic then go on line and get the dress cheaper some where else, but if they really want your business they won't lie, shame on them, customer service! if they want to lie to you I personally wouldn't want to do business with them, there is no reason for them to lie about the designer, that's just bad customer service!!! good luck in your search!!

@Jackie C - Thanks, and thanks for your thoughts. I agree. What did you think about the $100 discount for a sample dress? Seemed REALLY low to me.

That makes no sense either. They were defiantly being rude to you! Where I got my gown they had no problem giving me the designer name and I didn't even buy it that day. It doesn't look like a Sophia Tolli and if it is it is a bad knock off, so I would try another store. Take your pic and a good store will help find something similar.

Hi Desiree, the discount should of been deeper than that, you got to remember that when you go and look at a dress and look at the price, cut the price in half, that's what the shop paid for it, you are paying double what they paid for it plus shipping, even if this sample came in the same box with 5 other dresses you get charged the full shipping of the whole box, plus other brides has tried on that dress it's not like it's brand new out of the box
