Groom's wedding band cost

I went to my local jeweler who quoted me $1,000 for a classic 14k white gold 6mm wedding band. It does look like very nice quality and weight, and pretty identical to the one my dad has except my FH's would be white gold. Do you think that's a good deal? How much did you spend on your future...

Do you think that's a good deal? How much did you spend on your future husband's ring?

We paid about $400 for DH's gold ring. I forget the weight, it is fairly slim, size 11, with bevel edges. I would hop around a little or ask them to explain their pricing-is it by weight, etc?

The price sounds right for 14k.

I'm surprised everyone is saying that's normal for 14k gold. The price of gold right now is pretty cheap, so it really shouldn't cost 1,000 for that.

FH got a plain white gold band AND he got comfort fit which adds more weight/gold to the ring and it was still under $300. I believe FH's was also 6mm. I wouldn't pay 1,000 for that!

My ring, with diamonds in it wasn't even $1000!

Here's a pic of our rings. Mine was $525 and his was $290. And as you can see, I'm in NJ, so I'm not in an inexpensive area of the country.

Bands range. I'd say that's on the higher end. Ours was $700 but I forget the specs. It was very nice and a special "comfort fit".

We paid a little over $1000. 8mm white gold brushed with a bevel. The alternative metals can't always be resized or refurbished down the road depending on the metal. We decided to spend money now on a ring he can keep forever.

Sounds a little expensive, my FH ring was $500.

Annie, does the price include re-dipping the white gold as needed?

Wow, Nancy T. That's a good question. I never heard of that. What is re-dipping if you don't mind me asking.

I paid 100 dollars and I am glad I did not pay more. My husband loves his ring so much he wears it to the gym and all. I have to remind him to take it off and when he does, he leaves it in the car lol. Then again that is my husband and I know him well. He loses things. You husband may not be that way.

That's how much my FHs ring ended up costing. He had no desire to shop around and has to wear it and (hopefully) like it for the rest of his life so I didn't say anything.

OK really disgusting story but that might get people to think about alternative wedding bands if they/their spouse works in a hazardous field... My ex's dad has to carry around a medical card that says he has a piece of metal stuck in his body for when he goes off in metal detectors. He's an electrician. He was wearing his wedding band on a job, forgot to wear the proper boots (no idea how this happened when he was definitely not new to the job) and electrocuted himself. His ring melted into his flesh and he couldn't get it out unless they amputated. So the skin grew over the ring...

That's expensive, we got quoted like $200-$300 for a white gold from Reeds Jewelers.

Less than $800 for both. FH's is rose & white gold. Mine is rose gold with diamonds.

@Annie- When you buy any kind of white metal ring (silver, white gold, platinum, etc) it's got a rhodium plating on it. The metal itself may be white, but the rhodium is what gives it that really high shine, brand new look. However, it's a plating. It wears off. With white gold, if you don't have a great alloy mix, the white gold might have a slight yellowish tinge to it. Once that rhodium wears off, that will come through. This is more of an issue with cheaper rings. If you've got a good alloy mix, it'll still be white but just a little duller once that plating wears off. Getting it re-rhodium plated is really commonly referred to as getting it "dipped".

I'm going to get the cheapest one I can, FH can't wear it anyway due to the nature of his work, I like his remaining fingers! (He lost part of one because of his already!)

I'm so glad FH's wants to wear his ring around his neck when he's working/doing karate because Mrs. Atwood's story is just horrifying.
