Getting Rid of Old Bridesmaid Dress - Would That Upset You?

Cait, on November 7, 2017 at 1:29 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 59

My friend's wedding is over and done with and I'd like to get rid of the dress I wore as her bridesmaid. There's nothing wrong with it, per se, but it's just not something I'd ever wear again.

Would you be offended if you found out one of your friends was getting rid of the dress she wore as your bridesmaid? I'm a terrible liar so if she ever asked about it she'd find out right away. I don't want to offend/upset her, but I hate having things around that serve virtually zero use.

Nope! Not offended at all. Definitely if you paid for it

I don't see what the problem is, there are always tons of bridesmaid dresses for sale on wedding BST fb pages. I think it would make sense to sell or donate and if she asks let her know someone else is getting to enjoy it now.

No.. especially if you purchased it. It's yours to get rid of!

I wouldn't be upset. I personally just binged my closet and donated 6 of them.

Not at all, I think she'd be happy you could recoup some of your cost.

I wouldn't care. I'm buying my BMs dresses, and I still wouldn't care. I'd like it if they kept it, but it's formal wear, and I wouldn't expect them to feel obligated to keep it around

Nope. I wouldn't advertise the fact that you're getting rid of it, but it's totally normal to purge your closet from time to time.

I wouldn't be upset at all. I've had to get rid of several. I always donate mine to a local group that provides free prom dresses to high schoolers.

Nope, that wouldn't upset me at all as a bride! It's your dress, you can do with it what you like.

You didn't ask what you can do with it, but just in case: you could try to sell it on Poshmark, Mercari, or a local Facebook wedding group. If it's a popular style/color, maybe another bridesmaid could use it. Otherwise, you could donate it to Goodwill or a local organization. Aren't there organizations that accept dresses that girls can wear to prom? I remember one called Cinderella's Closet, but I don't know if it's still around. Can anyone help me out? Smiley smile

Wow - I was about to say that I'd be a little bummed, but I guess that's the UO around here!

Nope, I have been in 7 weddings and I only have kept 2 dresses. One of which I plan on getting rid of but it is so hideous I feel bad even donating it.

I was the maid of honor at my sisters wedding and I asked her if she would mind if I sold the dress...her response? Not at all! I'm thinking about selling my wedding dress.

    I think the majority of people don't mind. I know I wouldn't!

I don't know what would motivate someone to ask about a bridesmaid dress for their wedding that already happened, but no I wouldn't care, especially if you purchased it yourself.

If I was you I would donate the dress, rather than sell it though. Not sure if that's what you were planning on doing, but just thought I'd throw it out there Smiley smile

Honestly, I'm expecting that mine will try to sell theirs, and I am totally fine with it. They can cost an arm and a leg, if you can make some money back, go for it. I'd probably share their posting :p

@EM - well considering I was planning on just throwing it away, I'm glad I asked because now I'll donate! Had no idea there was a second-hand market. Great idea.
