getting a gift for the people throwing your bridal shower?

Allison, on January 7, 2015 at 11:40 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

Apparently I'm in bridal shower mode.

Are you supposed to get a gift for the person/people throwing your bridal shower? Did you?

All of my bridal party is participating in the bridal shower for me, each doing a different task. I just wasn't sure if I was supposed to get them a gift for throwing me a shower, and then another gift for being in the wedding, or just do one gift for the wedding?

You should as a thank you. (as you know) there is a lot of thought and planning into these events and its always a nice gesture. They should get a gift for throwing the shower and one for standing up in the wedding.

I did. I made them all tea cup candles. https://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/diy-teacup-candle-makers/0491d99b1150d2dc.html

I think something small but thoughtful is in order. My shower was ironically tea themed Smiley winking

I think usually whoever is the primary host gets a gift. I threw a bridal shower for a friend at my mom's house and she brought her a big succlent potted plant (which is perfect for my mom who loves to garden).

What do you do if your shower is a surprise?

Yes, you should get them all a little something as a thank you for the shower specifically. A hostess gift. It doesn't have to be a lot - gift card/ bottle of wine / a plant / favorite treat + a card.

Elyse, write a really nice thank you note to the hostess/host(s) of your shower after the fact. I guess I didn't get an actual hostess gift for my surprise shower...but it was a total surprise so it would've been impossible to have something prepared anyway. I don't know if I should've got her a gift after the fact to be honest.

Elyse, I would also write a nice thank you card, and maybe stick in a gift card even if it's just $10 to Starbucks. It's more about the thought of appreciation than gifting (to me).

Thanks! Sorry for hijacking your thread Allison! It's a big deal in my family that MOB does a surprise shower (good luck with that one mom) so I didn't know if I needed to keep something handy haha.

No problem elyse! That was a good question. So just something small as a thank you. I thought I should do that, but my mom thought I didn't need to. I will be doing it though.

Yes...gifts for all those that threw the party. I gave gift certificates and also little gifts-felted purse, earrings, etc.

My mom threw my shower. I wrote her a really nice thank you card, and purchased her a Pandora bracelet with two beads.

A hand-written thank you and a bottle of wine could be good if your girls like to schmooze a little. =)

Mrs M- 4 of them do, but one is pregnant, and even when she isn't pregnant she doesn't drink... for this I would like to get them all something that is the same... I was thinking about doing the wine idea for their gifts for the day-of, and substituting a wine glass and wine for a tumbler and something else for the BM that doesn't drink.

    Any suggestions are welcome!

The knot has great gifts, I also ordered some gifts that I got through Mark and Graham... they are owned by Pottery Barn.

I have never gotten a separate gift as a bridesmaid hosting a shower; just the gift on the night of the rehearsal dinner for being in the wedding. If you are having someone host your shower that is not a bridesmaid, you should definitely send at least a thank you or a gift of some sort. I have seen suggested a heartfelt thank you note as well as a beautiful flower bouquet or edible arrangements-style bouquet.

I've never heard of bridesmaids getting a hostess gifts for throwing a shower either, but where I'm from its totally well known that if you are a bridesmaids you are selling out for way more than a dress etc.

That being said I only have 3 and I LOVE this cute idea of getting them a little hostess gift so I definitely will be doing a little something
