DIY Teacup Candle Makers!

LadyMonk, on June 25, 2014 at 12:05 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 17

I loved this idea, and I think I'd like to make a few as thank you gifts (or part of the gift) to my bridemaids for hosting my shower/bachelorette, as well as my parents/aunt/uncle for hosting an afternoon tea on the wedding day during our gap, etc.

Do you have any DIY tips?

I read a couple of tutorials and it looks easy. Did you use a thermometer while melting the wax or was it not needed? Where did you find cheaper tea cups? What kind of wax did you use (I'm hoping to find soy, but it seems there are no stores in my city that sell it!). Did you purchase wax locally or via the internet?

Share your completed DIY's if you'd like to show off! I saw a few of them earlier in the year.

I found it's much cheaper to buy wax and stuff in bulk online. I found teacups at thrift shops a lot of my was 1 buck for cup and saucer or .49 for just the cup. Here is how I made them.

Since making the blog post however I started drilling wholes in pennies as the base and added 3 wicks for the wider teacups. I was having a problem with burning but since adding pennies they seem just fine. I am also unable to update it so letting you know (forgot log in).

Hopes this helps. Don't forget to show us your cups.

    1) This DIY is terrible. One of the worst I tried to do. You have been warned.

    2) We bought a huge block of wax. Do not recommend. It's cheaper but it's a pain to cut into smaller pieces to melt. I cut my ring finger I have a scar.

    3) Go to antique stores or thrift stores for tea cups. They still cost around $3 - $5.

    4) If you want them all the same color, you'll have to try to manage it all in the first batch. We tried to make pink and got many shades of the wrong colors.

    5) MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THAT LITTLE METAL THING AT THE END OF THE WICK. Important.

    6) I don't know if I have any more advice except that for my mom and I, this one was really difficult to do!!

Hahaha!!! ok, Lacey, I have definitely been warned Smiley smile I'm thinking if I end up getting a block of wax, I'm going to take a hammer to it while it's inside of a bag rather than trying to cut it. That sucks about the scar Smiley sad

Thank you for your tips!!! Maybe I'll try to use washers instead of pennies, because then I won't have to drill anything.

@Future Mrs. Matthews - Yes! At least they did around here! Antique stores have ones that are typically more beautiful but they're way more expensive.

I am actually excited to be doing these for my wedding! I love crafting items, and this is something new.

I am doing the candle GEL, not wax.

I have searched all my thrift stores for teacups.

You want to use some that a thick sided, fragile china and thin cups will shatter.

Make sure your wicks have the metal support (and investing in the stick tabs for the bottom will help stabilize it too.

Chopsticks/Pencils and rubber bands will support the wick until your wax hardens (hour or two in fridge).

Make sure to invest in quality essential oils for best fragrance (a little goes a long way!)

Have Fun hunting for your teacups! I am hunting for those with matchin saucers. But I am picking up extra plain saucers for those without.

@ Future: My biggest scores were from thrift stores, but have found some wonderful SETS @ Flea Markets too.

Maybe I should try the candles. We are having a beauty and the beast themed wedding. I was just going to put some cupcakes in teacup around our cake
