For those who are married, what hiccups did you encounter on your wedding day?

Nic.Dee, on June 23, 2014 at 8:00 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 35

Hey ladies. I was just curious what sorts of things went wrong on your big day, and how you handled the situation. I know not everything runs 100% smoothly, but I like hearing about situations and how people dealt with them. I tend to be a tad anxious and I want to be somewhat prepared for some types of situations lol

    1. I left the WP flowers at my house the night before and didn't realize it until the morning of my wedding.

    2. My Jr. BM broke the zipper on my wedding dress, so I had to be sewn into it.

    3. In the limo, right when I was getting ready to exit the TV fell on my foot.

    - One of my BM's was two hours late to the hotel, to get her hair and makeup done.

    - The traffic was horrendous because of torrential rain, so we were all late to the ceremony site.

    - It rained and was very windy. We had a beach wedding.

    - My husband and I were VERY late to the reception (had to make a pit stop to the hospital)

    - Because we were late, we missed a ton of photography time. My photo/video team was garbage anyway.

    BUT...

    - My hairstylist and makeup artist knew how strapped we were for time, and got that last BM in and out of the chair (and honestly, she looked stunning, better than some of the others).

    - Couldn't do anything about the rain. Everyone was stuck in the same traffic. We'd be late. Whatever.

    - By the time we got to the ceremony site, the rain had let up but it was still very dark and drizzling. Our pastor was great; he made sure the ceremony was quick and painless so that we didn't get poured on.

    - My husband and I did what we had to do. Everyone was very understanding, considering the circumstances of the day, and that put me at ease, a lot.

    - My photographer and videographer were horrible. Thankfully, I had two guests that came with their fancy cameras and took much better pictures. Given the dark clouds and rain on my day, I did some editing of my own and we now have some really beautiful pictures. As for the videographer, after he sent me my video, I went back to him and paid for all of the raw footage so that I could create my own video, and I did, and it's wonderful.

My best advice would be to have as much of a proactive and accepting attitude on your day. We all do the best we can in our own rights. If things go without a hitch then that's awesome. But if they don't, stressing and freaking out about things that are already happening will do you no good anyway, just remember that.

My wedding coordinator was late decorating the venue.

The pastor was late getting to the church but we still were able to start on time.

I think that's everything that I can remember.

I paid for nonalcoholic beverages at the reception and the venue never told my guests.

-My dad stepped on a giant water bug then my train. When my train was fluffed at the end of the aisle, I heard a huge gasp by the crowd. Yup.

-We had some hiccups with the music.

-Some how there was no food put out at cocktail hour, but dinner was served early, so I guess that made up for it.

-Biggest one: officiant left without signing the marriage license! We tracked her down the next day, but truthfully, my wedding date should probably be Nov. 10th...

BUT, so many things did go right. I had a perfectly sunny 70 degree day in November. When we finally did eat, the food was delicious! It was a great day with tons of fun, despite the mishaps. I mean, at least the pier we posed on didn't give in and dump us into the water!

I was a little bummed after because all the little things that went wrong, but now I try to focus on all the things that went right. Chances are, everything will not go perfectly, but don't let that ruin your day or your memories. You have the power to make that day wonderful!

    1) Our officiant was half an hour late. He was supposed to arrive at 4:15 and got there at 4:45. Ceremony started at 5. No one told me he was running late so it was fine.

    2) It rained immediately after our ceremony so we missed out on a lot of pictures. We should have done a first look. We snuck out during the reception, so we still go some good shots of the two of us. However, my photographer asked me if I needed more family photos and I was drunk and told her no. We each have pictures with our parents, but we don't have any of both of us with our parents.

    3) One of the groomsmen didn't try on his shoes at men's wearhouse. They didn't fit. He wore sneakers. At first I was pissed, and then I realized it wasn't a big deal and let it go.

    - GM forgot their corsages at my in-laws house, no worries my DOC picked them up.

    - We ordered a white stretch limo, it broke down before the wedding. However this worked out great, they sent a 40 person huge bus instead! It was fab.

    - One of my BM fainted during the ceremony, she's fine. We had about 6 nurses as guests so they assisted her, took her to the back, pastor prayed and we continued. By the time we were signing she was back on stage.

That's about It, my wedding was on time and I was actually early. Our DOC was great she handled everything for us.

Oh where do I start lol

    1. We had 14 people who RSVP'd and not show up. At $85 a head I was not happy. And was tempted to invoice these people. Lol

    2. Our best man was one of those people who didn't show up. He waited until the day before to try to book a flight and couldn't get one that would arrive in time.

    3. We had multiple people call us and ask to get them from the airport the day before. The airport is 2 hours away!!

    4. I temporarily lost my engagement ring and didn't have it during the ceremony. My friends tore my house up looking for it. It was on the trolley the hole time lol

    5. I never told anyone this but I was underwhelmed by my cake. It was cute but not my vision. Just expect it to be more like my picture.

    6. When I got my professional pics back I wished we would have spent more time during scenic pictures. We got married at a beautiful country club and I didn't get any pictures on the greens. My mom says we can always do a redo but I haven't decided.

    7. We had to push the ceremony back by a half an hour. Not because we were late but because most of our guests were.

However with all the hiccups I still enjoyed my wedding. Most of them are running jokes now.

    Well...

    1. My mother in law didn't get to sit in the correct seat (just an oversight of the DOC - she didn't direct the guys to sit her in a certain spot)

    2. Our Photobooth had technical difficulties, and never worked for our reception (I got a full refund).

    3. My uncle let us borrow his antique car, and he dropped me off at the entrance of the ceremony, but he forgot to pick husband and I up at the end, so we just walked off.. haha!

    4. Apparently our bartender was stingey when the GM/my brother were trying to get drinks before the cocktail hour started (they worked it out, but they were very WTF about it)

    5. The GM forgot to stay and clean up (lack of communication on MY part) so it was my Mom/sister/Step Dad "figure" cleaning up at the end, and the GM missed their 11pm, post clean up ride back to the hotel.

Honestly, I knew NOTHING about ANY of these things until AFTERWARDS. Didn't matter. There's nothing I could have done.

Bottom line: just understand that small things will go wrong, but that usually, they don't matter ALL that much. I'm glad i told everyone beforehand to just deal with things that go wrong using their BEST judgment, and just leave me out of it. I had a blast getting ready with the girls upstairs, and then I'd sneak away every now and then to see what my vendors were doing downstairs. So much fun.

DJ blunders!! He pronounced our last name wrong being announced, our groomsmans last name wrong, and he started to play the mother/son song for the father daughter song. I had to walk up to him and give him the axe signal. I was pretty pissed but he did a great job the rest of the night. Grrr idiot. If there's four things you don't want to fuck up as a DJ, it's names, and the three most important songs of the night. I don't know how I didn't get more upset about this but it was the only thing that went wrong the whole wedding so I guess it wasn't the worst that could happen. Still, go over your names with your DJ. He should have prompted that convo with me beforehand but I didn't think about it. It's his job for heavens sake!

The person who made my cake decided that she didn't want to show up on time to the venue, and ended u arriving after we did, which meant that there were no "escort cupcakes" which I used so that people would know where to sit. The cake had finger marks, and they are present in every picture unfortunately. Oh! And after she made a big speech about how she would make me personalized cake toppers she then argued with me about how I didn't have one for her to put on top. *Rolls eyes* As if all that wasn't enough, DH and I had planned to smack our BM and MOH with the cake instead of each other. She warned the best man, and completely ruined the playful surprise.

My caterers asked almost everyone but DH or I too pay the $2,000 bill on site. I don't know why you:

    A) Would tell my guests how much we owed you.

or B) Wouldn't find the person in the big white dress to handle the bill.

It should be noted that DH and I tried for 2 weeks to pay the amount due, and were told to just pay at the venue. Other than that, it went pretty well.

-It rained just before the ceremony, though that was inside. Our photos were to be outside. Luckily it was a light rain for 5 minutes and only in certain parts of the city.

-A good friend of mine's flight was cancelled and thus missed our ceremony, but was there for the reception.

-Forgot to put the bouquets in water the night before, so they looked pretty sad by mid-day.

-Where certain tables and people were suppose to be seated was wrong. That was my decorators fault. Only DH, my mom and I noticed.

-My uncle (mom's brother) got really drunk and hit on my cousin (dad's niece). Same uncle and common law wife got into a big fight at the end of the night outside our venue. Heard about that the next day.

Zach forgot my ring. . and had to run home to get it like half an hour before the wedding started. Luckily, I had no clue until afterwards. He made EVERYONE keep quiet! ; )

The preacher was about 20 min late, so I freaked out. My son forgot to tell my husband how my rings go on (Engagement ring goes on after wedding band) and didn't even take them out of the box when he handed them to him, so he fumbled around with that! Husband didn't give my son the box back when he got the rings out so he just stood there holding it. I couldn't get his ring on over his knuckle! At the reception I forget that my candles needed water in the vase. I had no idea on how to cut the cake!

After watching the video I realized that none of that mattered in the end! The preacher still had us starting on time. It was actually cute and funny me taking the ring box and pitching it back to my son after we were announced as husband and wife and getting ready to walk out! Everyone laughed when I couldn't get his ring on. The kids sitting back down didn't change the outcome and they were all involved in the wedding so everyone was happy. No one thought anything of it because the candles didn't have water in them I'm sure they didn't even know. And the cake tasted great even if it didn't look good after we got done cutting it into a million pieces! Was this the "dream wedding" of my life, no. But when you get older things change. I wouldn't trade my $3k wedding for any expensive wedding!! It's not what material things you have there, it's the family and friends there that make it special! It's them along with all of the little "flub ups" that make it one of a kind!

I had a hair disaster. My long-time stylist was doing my hair and she must have been seriously lacking sleep on my wedding day. My updo was awful, and looked *nothing* like the trial we had done and agreed upon. We even had photos but she couldn't replicate it. She kept trying to fix it but kept making it worse. Because of all the corrections, it took her WAY longer than it was supposed to and my hair sucked. I had to just leave the salon with hair I hated since we were running so behind at that point and I needed to get back to the hotel for make-up.

Thank god my make-up artist saved the day. She called in an emergency hair stylist that was part of her team. He came right away and completely re-did my hair. He was amazing and it looked better than the original trial with my stylist.

BUT - I had to pay for the bad hairstyle ($150) AND another $300 for the new hairstyle due to the rush fee, so I spent a total of $450 just for my own hair that day. And we lost about 45 minutes in photo time due to the disaster stylist.

The best man forgot the rings in my husband's hotel room, which he had checked out of. Best man had to run back to the hotel right before the ceremony (luckily just a few hundred yards away). Apparently he just ran up to the front desk and said "I need to get into room 224 NOW" and they immediately made him a key card lol. Not sure how I feel about their lax security, but glad he got the rings.

The venue didn't have anything right with the table layouts, and they had the head table set up for like, 16 people (I think it was leftover from the wedding the day before). My awesome godmother/cousin told the venue how it was supposed to be set up and took care of the favors/centerpieces/etc. The venue had a giant closet full of nice centerpieces and decor that they said we could use, but the stuff available the day of our wedding was TOTALLY different from the stuff we had picked out to use previously, so we kind of had to scramble --- that's what you get for being cheap I guess lol.

Our dog was really freaked out by our processional music and was hardcore trying to run away until he had walked past the band... I would have communicated more with the band as to where they were planning to set up so we could have prevented that.

The cake was wrong, but it wasn't really a big deal. We had picked out some flavor combinations at our tasting, but we didn't actually put down a deposit, sign a contract, etc. Later, when I put the deposit down and signed the contract, I gave her a piece of paper with our slightly modified design (which she followed) and our final flavor combinations (which she apparently didn't notice). The cake was still good, it just wasn't 100% what we wanted.

The worst thing that happened to us was that our reception venue told us the morning of that the napkin rental place had shorted us napkins and there weren't enough for all the tables. My parents just went and picked up some more, so problem was solved. They ended up not shorting us, though, so I don't know what the venue was doing with some of them.

Oh, and at the reception the GM decided it was a good idea to stop everything to have DH go out and look at what they did to his truck (they decorated it). Would have been fine, except they went way too far and put 7 full bottles of the smallest glitter there is into his air vents and food coloring in his windshield wiper fluids. He was so pissed that he almost fought some of them and this lead him to getting absolutely shit faced lol.

    Let's see:

    1. I was bloated and a bit hungover from the RD, and it took all five bridesmaids to jam me into my dress. (At one point my sister was bracing her knee on my back to get me in there!) I also had backfat in some pics, which luckily I found hilarious. Seriously, I look like I'm rocking some C-cups on my shoulder blades in some of the pics. Plus there were all these annoying tiny buttons down the back.

    2. My mom forgot to stay for photos after the ceremony, my BM's dad had to drive over and get her. Luckily we were able to shift some things around and we weren't delayed.

    3. I had great plans for getting everything to the ceremony and reception, but no plans for getting things back. I did a lot of scurrying around the next day to find everything.

    4. One BM spent the entire weekend arguing with her boyfriend (who was also her boss), to the point that they got in a sobbing, hysterical fight on the dance floor at the reception. The boyfriend had to be escorted out, and the BM classed things up by hooking up with a groomsman in an elevator.

I'd say none of those things were dealbreakers, even the BM drama. Now it just gives the day texture, a few fun stories to add to the pile of things that happened that day. Guests take their cues from you - if the bride and groom are relaxed and happy, guests will take any problems in stride.
