first anniversary tradition?

Finally mrs.jkr, on March 10, 2014 at 6:46 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 32

The one where you freeze the top twit of your cake and eat it with dh on your first anniversary. Is anyone planning on doing it? Has anyone even heard of it?

It was really the only wedding tradition I knew and that my family did and growing up I always thought I would do it, but I told fh about it and he just blanched. He knew nothing of it and was insulted by the thought of it and declared it a waste of perfectly good cake haha

Nope. our baker makes you your wedding cake again in a small couple's cake for your first year anniversary. Incidentally, right as we were gonna cut the cake, my grandma yells out "Save the top!" I could have strangled her. She got the nastiest look from me. Update your guests whatever you decide to do!

I did that for my first wedding... I wouldn't let my late husband smash the cake in my face but on our one year anniversary he chased me down the hall with it and smashed the whole thing all over me. It is a pretty great memory for me. I am pretty sure that isn't what you are supposed to do with it but that's what we did Smiley smile

We're having a destination wedding so we wouldn't be able to transport a tier of wedding cake back from Hawaii with us. I'd rather eat the cake fresh anyway. Smiley smile

I'm sure we'll plan something memorable for our 1 year anniversary though. Not sure what, but it'll be great to celebrate that milestone in our relationship.

My baker wont let us do it because it's not good to eat a cake that's been frozen for a year. So they will remake the top tier for our first ann.

I have been told by many people that year old frozen cake is really gross to eat. I'm thinking that we will probably go out to dinner with our friends (they're wedding anniversary is a week before ours will be), then maybe get some champagne and new cake from somewhere (maybe even caramel covered apple pie--that's a guilty pleasure) and just spend some quality kid free time together.

We are not...The only freezer space we have is on our fridge and it is precious lol. Not enough room to store cake for a year.

We just got an ice cream cake in the same flavour as ours for our one year anniversary. We put the cake topper on it.

@m&m cakes like that do not have artificial stuff in it. So there shelf life is a couple days and thats it. It's not meant to be frozen for a year. It will be steal and taste gross. I did a wedding cake for someone and it had fresh bananas and pineapples in it and they planned on freezing it for the yr! So not good.

We will (Think the top layer will keep or will freeze it) but it will be used for first childs christening not first anniversary

@Morgan Cake that has been frozen for a year is not bad for you. You can freeze almost ANY food for a length of time....it doesn't matter if it is artificial or not. The cake most likely is not going to taste as good as it does on your wedding day, but it's not bad for you.

Ladies if it was bad for you, I don't think it would be such a wide spread tradition

Definitely not doing this, it sounds gross. Plus it doesn't give FH the excuse of why not to buy me delicious dessert on our first anniversary ;-)

Yup, planning to do it. My ILs have it in their freezer for us. You cant just throw it in there though, I think ours is wrapped in plastic and tinfoil inside the bakery box and then the whole box is in a ziploc bag. hopefully it won't get freezer burn.

@jamie eating cookie dough is bad for you and people still do it tradition or not. Im not saying freezing a cake for a year is going to kill you or give you serious health problems but it is definitely not something that should be done. Yes the cake can be eaten and it will be stale and definitely wont taste like it did on your wedding day. That's the reason why most bakeries who make wedding cakes tell you not too and they offer to remake it for the one year. Im a cake decorator\baker . . I went to school for this stuff. Also I said its bad for you because some people get fancy fillings that shouldnt be frozen and so on.

We're barely even having cake. We're only doing a small cake to cut and then donuts as the other dessert. So we are def not saving the anniversary cake. I've heard it tastes pretty gross too. We are however doing a wine box thing as part of the ceremony and we will open that bottle on our anniversary

Yes I've heard of it and yes it is common. It is not BAD for you. It obviously will not taste as moist or as fresh as on your wedding day but it is not going to harm you. You can preserve it better by wrapping it really well in tinfoil several times and putting it in an airtight container to store it. I think it's a fun tradition.

I would like to do it but I don't like cake as it is so we will probably just each have a bite and then toss it out!

My ex and I saved ours, and it was pretty gross despite following all the direction about how to wrap it, deep freezing it etc.

DH and I didn't save any. We can order a fresh cake if we really want cake :-)
