favors - what's the WORST one you ever received?

Mrs Cheapskate, on January 14, 2015 at 10:11 AM Posted in Planning 0 90

So, people are always asking if they are necessary (and they're not) and what the best ones were (most people say edible is the best) but just for fun, whats the worst one you ever got? Mine was a rolled up scroll thingy with a cutsie poem on it, thanking everyone for coming. Complete with a fake silver wedding ring around it. It was about as big as a post it note. Could've put that on the back of the program, what a waste of money and time to roll them all up... anyway what about you? :-)

Those nasty mints a lot of people seem to give you. They taste like the heart shaped Valentines candies that read "Be Mine" and "Love you." Those are the worst.

Sorry if anyone is doing this but I hate those pastel colored almond candy they give out for favors...They remind me of a 90s babyshower or wedding

The place card holder was considered the favor. I don't even remember what it looked like. We're doing two favors. One is a hand painted coaster with one of our favorite song lyrics and the other is a cd made to look like a vinyl record (called digital vinyl) with songs from the reception as well as a few of our favorites. We're kind of older and almost all of our guests will be over 35 so we all kind of like the same music.

Those almonds are called jordan almonds and are an Italian/greek tradition:

Fresh almonds have a bittersweet taste, which represents life. The sugarcoating is added with the hope that the newlyweds' life will be more sweet than bitter.

ITALIAN WEDDINGS Five almonds signify five wishes for the bride and groom: health, wealth, happiness, fertility, and longevity. These almonds decorate each place setting as favors, tucked into pretty boxes or tulle bags called *bomboniere* that are often personalized with the couple's names and wedding date.

GREEK WEDDINGS Sugarcoated almonds in traditional Greek weddings are called *koufeta*. They are placed in little bags in odd numbers and are served on a silver tray. Odd numbers are indivisible, symbolizing how the newlyweds will share everything and remain undivided. Tradition holds that if an unmarried woman puts the almonds under her pillow, she'll dream of her future husband.

I dont see them going away any time soon, unfortunately. And IM Italian! Lol :-)

I hate edible favors, because I am a very picky eater. :/ i would prefer something I can put on my nick nack shelf or in my keepsake box. My cousin gave away little bags of candy. Bleck. I was much happier with the bells and ribbon on a stick that we used for her send off.

Elle, I am totally the opposite of you. The worst thing I got was a fan from my cousin's wedding. I felt obligated to take it, and ended up throwing it out later. It makes me sad for the environment. At least if I didn't like something edible I could give it to someone who would.

Edible favors are the worst for me. I have a severe food allergy and it's in almost anything. The worst would be from a wedding we were in back in May of 2013. The bride swore up and down that the favors (mini pies) were organic and that I'd have no issues. Needless to say, I did in fact have serious issues.

ETA: this favor ended up resulting in a trip to the hospital. So yeah... not a fan.

Candy made from modeling chocolate. I definitely prefer edible favors to knick-knacks, but they definitely sacrificed taste so that they could have something to fit into their "theme".

My sister gave everyone little organza baggies with M&M's in them. So unoriginal and cheap!

This makes me feel better that I am now NOT doing edibles! We're doing a literary-themed wedding with book centerpieces and everything, so I think we're going to do bookmarks with the "Reader, I married him" quote from Jane Eyre and our names and wedding date.

Edible favors are always the best for me. The worst favor I received was a coaster. The crowd was all very young & we don't really care for them. I gave it to my mom

So, I know you just asked for worse, but, I have to say I am never upset about favors. I tend to think everything is cute that someone is giving me though, even if I just end up throwing it away.

    Things I threw away immediately:

Nasty mints, Hershey Kisses, Home made candy that fell apart in the car on the way home, kissing bell card holder, stale s'mores kit.

Things that went bad/died before I did anything with:

Homemade blackberry jam, pine tree saplings

Things I have kept but don't ever use:

    Sunglasses, Coozie, Wine Stopper

I went to 9 weddings last year... Can't say that I was excited about any of the favors. We are doing shot glasses (but I am fairly certain it was a waste of money).

Great post, as I'm stumped ion what favors we should have. One will be our place card holder which doubles as a magnet (it's a gold animal, like lions or horses or rhinos). Thy are split in half so you would have the head and front end, then the butt (it's kinda funny, really). Then I'm thinking tea or coffee. Or bath tea? We are using vintage books for center pieces. Maybe collect a bunch of books and they can pick one to take home? No idea.

We're not doing favors because people just throw them away - We're donating that money instead.

ETA: MrsCheapskate - I like when people call me Mrs. P - makes me smile :-D

Yeah, maybe the almond thing would be better received if an explanation of what it means were printed on an attached card or something. But, no matter what they taste horrible and are hard as little rocks. :-)
