Dress fits at store but too tight when you bring it home?

Joanna G, on November 8, 2012 at 7:16 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20

Has anyone else had this issue? I tried on a 6 at David's and it was actually loose. We were thinking of ordering a 4 but they said to order bigger and get it taken in. Well, I picked it up and it was so tight around the bust that I had to take my strapless bra off ( it does have a tiny bit of padding). It's hard to zip even without a bra so I tried a corset thinking in would squeeze me in an still a struggle... that one has a Little padding too. David's has made an appt. for me this Sat and said that I could exchange it for an 8 and they could take it down to a 4 if needed. I'm actually a 2 petite normally but I guess dresses are different. So glad I have a year... Has anyone else been surprised by the way a dress fits when they bring it home?

Wedding dress sizes have no bearing on your actual size. I have heard they run really small in some cases. At least David's is giving you the right advice, order too big and then taking in is the best way to go.

I feel your pain....I have an 8 and it is tight in the bust and extrememly loose in wiast and thigh area. I am hoping that my seamstress can let it out a tiny bit in the bust....my street size is a 4

I'm sure she will be able to let it out a little. They said that they would have their seamstress look at it and decide what's best. They also said that their dresses can be stretched out since tried on by so many people.

You tried a sample on in the store and they ordered a new one for you, right? If so, the sample has been tried on many times, and is probably just more loose than a new one.

Yes, that's right. I tried on the sample one and then the new one is a lot tighter. The zipper goes up but it's tight on the back.

Then it's definitely the issue of a sample vs. a new one. And don't worry about the number at all, my dress was 6 sizes above my street size, just so that I could squeeze boobage into it.

It is because the dresses you try on in the store have been beat to death and all stretched out.

I have to go up 2 sizes just to accommodate my bust and bring it in at the waist because it looks like I am swimming in the dress. I think they run smaller then your actual store dresses. At least they are having you bring it in!!! did you buy if off the rack at DB or did they order it for you? They tired telling me to go down a size and I will be ok but I think I rather stay with the size I had on and take it in

I will never leave a store without trying on a dress. DB is not too happy about this, but I have bought two of the same size jeans in a store only to get home to find out one clearly had the wrong label. 18 and maybe an 8 but it had an 18 label. Of course jeans I could return. DB says no returns so be careful.

They ordered it but they tried to tell me to go down a size also because the size 6 was too big at the store. So happy to have a lot of time

Joanna yes they told me that I should go down a size also. But they did tell me if it was too small they would exchange it for me. But I think I am going to stay with the size I tired on and just have them take the waist in a ton.

I'm glad they are letting me exchange it for a bigger size.

I purchased my dress last week from Davids Bridal. I also heard that your dress size is usually 2 sizes bigger. So I was surprised when a size 12 fit me like a glove because Im a size 10 in street clothes. I hope it all works out for you! *fingers crossed*

I had the same issues I bought an 8 at Davids and now it is really tight around the bust. It will zip up, but it struggles to get there.

Yup, same thing. You know my dress is fit and flare... Wonder if its more common for the tighter dresses

My dress is very tight fitting as well, but I would expect to have a harder time zipping it up in the mid-section and surprisingly it fits fine until the bust. I've been debating on whether I should try to get it taken out slightly or deal with the tightness. I guess I should decide quickly since they always keep the dress for a month when you get alterations.

Went to David's and they didn't have an 8 but had me try on the 10 and it was much more comfortable near the bust. It needs to get taken in quite a bit in the tummy area and just a tiny bit in the bust area. The seamstress said that they made that dress very fitted and my bust made me go from the street size 2 to dress size 10. The most important lesson... I feel so much more comfortable and I rather get it taken in than out Smiley smile

I was told that this can happen because people tend to stretch dresses out in the store. So the same size from the designer will be a little smaller.

I had the opposite problem! The sample dress (10) fit perfectly in the hips, but they told me to order a petite (also a 10) since I wasn't going to wear heels. Tried it on and it was larger than the sample! My hips are swimming! However, the bust does fit better. My sister is teasing me that I don't have to loose weight to fit into my dress, I need to gain weight! Smiley xd
