Do people still throw rice??

Jessica, on February 15, 2013 at 5:11 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 31

Or is that just in the movies? Our venue does not allow rice, birdseed, or rose petals. We thought about bubbles, but I'm not too into handing out a bunch of little bubble containers for people to leave laying around and/or throw away (I hate waste). What are you doing, or should I say guest doing, as you walk down the aisle as the new Mr. & Mrs.? I think I'm going with just clapping..or is that boring?

I'm doing bubbles..rice is a no no because of the harm it can do to the little birdies.

Many people also consider throwing rice wasteful and it is harmful to little birds. But if clapping is boring, then my wedding was really blah ;-) I think everything is happening so quickly, that even if we had planned something, there wouldn't have been enough time.

What about SILK rose petals? That's what we're doing. A lot of times they don't want the real rose petals because people step on them and they stain the floor. We're not doing a grand exit since we're getting married at a hotel so we're having people toss silk petals in paper cones as we walk back down the aisle after the ceremony.

Mrs S. I certainly do not think clapping is boring!! I'm all for not having to add something else for me to plan!!! This is what we're doing. I just know a couple people who recently got married or are getting married have asked me this..and my response was nothing. I guess some brides put efforts in some places where others don't. This is one of those places a thought never really crossed my mind.

While I know rice is harmful, birdseed attracts birds (obviously) and the venue doesn't want to have to "clean up" after the birds...makes sense to me!

I know :-) I guess that's why we skipped so many things. What about ribbon wands?

I'm doing bubbles.... I don't like those little flag/streamer things or clapping (I find them boring)... petals are like $7 a box and thats for like 3 hand fulls, so it adds up. Confetti is just trash and I don't want to have to clean up. Rice makes birds explode. Bird seed/flower seeds smell and can get caught in clothes. I like sparklers (except when given to kids too young to know you arent supposed to touch things with them) but I am doing it in the daytime.

When I was in Girl Scouts, I learned that the lady that founded it (Juliette Low) went deaf in one ear after her wedding because they were throwing rice and a piece got lodged in her ear. I have been completely dead set against ever having rice thrown at me ever since then.

We aren't doing anything after the ceremony but we are doing a "sparkler send off" after the reception, just because I want a picture like this:

I LOVE sparklers, but we can't have open flame pretty much anywhere in the summer in the state of Colorado. We can't even have people smoking in a desiginated area. I'm not really a fan of the wands. I think we'll just stick to clapping...I don't have to do anything for that!

Ribbon wands are a nice alternative.

I am having my flower girl blow bubbles instead of throwing petals. I think it would be cute. Plus, she's wearing purple cowboy boots which I think will be absolutely adorable.

I've never been to a wedding where they toss something as they go back down the aisle. Never seemed like it was missing anything. The only time I've seen anything tossed/blown/rattled is as they leave the reception for the night.

We didn't do anything, people just clapped. No one ever brought up the idea of anything else besides clapping.

My cousin, a few years ago did bubbles, but that's the only one I've seen do something special.

We are doing a live butterfly release. I am so excited to see it. Hopefully everything goes as planned Smiley smile You can check that out at swallowtail farm. Just google that. They have a video on it. It's a bit pricey but just think you get to set a beautiful butterfly out and that's never a waste Smiley smile

We had bubbles and they looked so pretty! The flower girls especially loved them.

I wish we had thought about butterflies - they would have been perfect for our outdoor garden wedding. We actually saw 3 butteflies that "attended" our wedding and they were so lovely! Maybe we can do that for our 5 year vow renewal.

We're doing the sparklers as well. I originally wanted to do birdseed but found out our venue doesn't allow them. They also don't allow rice (rightfully so), colored bubbles or rose petals. We're having an evening wedding so I think the sparklers will go well.

I've heard of people doing rainbow sprinkles too! I love that idea but whatever we use has to be cleaned up before we leave. It's easier to throw away a bucket of sparklers than it is to sweep up sprinkles! LOL

I wanted glitter but my fh said no so we are doing sprinkles bright colors like our wedding. Our venue is ok with it cause by morning they should dissolve. Plus my fh is a chef and I'm a pastry chef so it suites us

At my first wedding....many years ago, rice was still "in"...but not thrown inside the church,..it was thrown outside as we came outside.

We are doing bubbles because we don't want the mess to clean up from rice, and bird seed....plus, we are having a dove release...don't want the birds hanging around to eat the seed when they are suppose to be flying back to their home.
