Do people really need salad??

Melanie, on January 21, 2016 at 9:03 PM Posted in Planning 0 57

Hi All!

We are planning a hotel wedding with about 150 guests. The hotel doesn't allow us to bring outside food or drinks. I'm looking for ways to cut costs. The venue charges $6pp (not including taxes and service fees) for a basic salad. Do people really need the salad? We're having 2-3 hors d'oeuvres during cocktail hour and a plated dinner. I'm hoping to get rid of the salad. Are my guests going to miss not having a salad served before dinner?

Thanks so much for any advice!

I would miss it very much. Personally, it's my favorite part of the meal. Plus, to me it's a good thing to have for those with dietary restrictions. Usually if they can't eat whatever the main is at least they can eat the salad so they don't starve. I'm a vegetarian and typically there is only one vegetarian option so if I can't eat it then at least I can eat the salad. If someone is gluten free then salad always works. To me it's just something that is really nice to have.

I think you might be fine without the salad since you are having hors d'oeuvres but I am still learning all the rules. I personally wouldn't notice it.

I would miss a salad. Some people don't care about it. You have to know your crowd. Do they like salad?

I love salad and would miss it! But $6 pp for a salad seems a little expensive..

I eat a salad everyday. At a wedding(or other event/party) I'm glad not to eat salad! Save your money girl!

I love salads, and Reggie is right about having it for people with diets. Honestly the hors d'oeuvre are probably unnecessary, they are cool, but with salad and plated dinner it makes it a bit much. However, if you have veggie hors d'oeuvres that could be a compromise.

2-3 hors d'oeuvres during the cocktail hour? You mean those bite-sized things? Not enough.

I went to a wedding where they only offered 3 different passed hors d'oeuvres, during their cocktail hour, and our family was only offered one of them. We only learned about the other 2, when we sat down to dinner. It seems as though the other table guests didn't get more than one bite, either. I didn't like the one we were offered, but I ate it anyway. My sister didn't eat, because it was mostly meat. (We learned that none of the 3 were vegetarian). My sister was ready to eat her napkin.

I was told by a friend - whose father was a country club manager (she worked as a server, for many summers), that you need to provide the equivalent of 5 hors d'oeuvres per person, per 45 minutes.

Your salad price is quite reasonable. Do it!

I pay more than that for my lunch salads at the corner bakery near my office. Don't skip the salad. ETA: honestly mystified why people think this is pricey? It's a wedding meal, $6 seems cheap as hell for something that really is a necessity for the meal.

Pay for the salad! I think people would expect it. I know I would.

I would not miss the salad. But it appears I'm in the minority. Just throwing my vote out there. Also, not sure what Dreamer is talking about and I've read it 4 times. Every wedding that has Apps have had 2-3 choices and there was never a problem. If you see a server pass by and you are hungry, grab an app. If they are on a table, walk to the table and get some. I rarely finish my salad because I don't want to be too full that I can't enjoy most of my meal. And I never finish a meal at a wedding because they are always so big. But I'd rather have more of the the main course than a salad.

How long is your cocktail hour? If it's truly an hour you could probably skip apps and go straight to dinner. Our cocktail hour was 4-5:30 and then dinner so we didn't do any apps...

I don't eat salad so I wouldn't care at all. But you know your guest better than we do. Is your meal plated or buffet?

I know saving the money is tempting but I have a friend who has allergies to a lot of foods and can usually only eat the salad so I know for someone like her she would be bummed to not have one.

I surprisingly usually enjoy salads at weddings as well but i can't say I'd miss it per say.

@pancakes I think she means each person should get 5 apps for every 45 minutes, not that there should be 5 options. you could have 2 of one or something.

I agree with @Dreamer. If you had more hors d'oeuvres, then I would say maybe you don't need the salad, but with that few, people are going to be hungry! Portions on plated dinners also tend to be smaller so keep that in mind. People will need food to soak up all the alcohol they will be drinking.

@stacy - That's what I thought at first, but it's not that. Because if she has 2-3 different appetizer selections, someone could have multiples of them all and eat 5 per 45 mins. But Dreamer is adamant that 2-3 options are not enough.

I hate salad, but my mom ALWAYS orders a salad with her meal wherever we are. I know many people who are like this. I don't think salad can be skipped.

I would miss the salad... Are you having a dessert? If you plan on having dessert, maybe keep the salad and skip the dessert? Serve your cake as dessert?
