Hi All!

We are planning a hotel wedding with about 150 guests. The hotel doesn't allow us to bring outside food or drinks. I'm looking for ways to cut costs. The venue charges $6pp (not including taxes and service fees) for a basic salad. Do people really need the salad? We're having 2-3 hors d'oeuvres during cocktail hour and a plated dinner. I'm hoping to get rid of the salad. Are my guests going to miss not having a salad served before dinner?

Thanks so much for any advice!

Yes. Don't cut corners on food. Cheaper invites, skip programs, favors, menus, less flowers, etc.

I hate salad so I wouldn't miss it, but I am probably in the minority

Miranda, My mama is the same way. I would miss the salad and some of your guests may miss it too.

Do the salad. If you don't people will think that your caterer messed up and forgot it. They will ask the waitstaff about it.

I know I would miss it. But if there were veggies elsewhere in your meal it wouldn't be such a huge deal.

I love salad, but it would not be the end of the world to attend a wedding that did not have it. It's a salad. I think you'll be fine without it.

I'm a salad kind of girl. I personally would miss it despite whatever else was served.

I love salad, but I wouldn't miss it. However, it looks like I am in the minority, but $900 seems like a lot for salad especially if it is basic.

I love salads, but if there wasn't one I wouldn't even think of it.

I would miss the salad. I would try to find another corner to cut. Order cheaper invites, skip favors, skip programs, skip the limo, etc. There are tons of other places to skimp that are not food related.

ETA: I would miss it less if it was a buffet. I expect a salad with a plated dinner though.

I would not miss the salad! Save the $$$. As long as there is another veggie with dinner.

I would miss it. However is there an option for people to ask for it? Cause there are a lot of people who hate salad or may not like the dressing or toppings and such. So maybe you could put somewhere that you need to ask for it or if it is table side ordering the waiters can ask if they want salad.... I don't know lol Just trying to help! haha

ETA: DATE TWINNNNNNN ok that's all.

    Sorry if I was confusing.

Where I'm from hors d'oeuvres are small, 1-2 bite sized, like individual shrimp. They're butlered/passed by servers. If the reception only offers a couple of kinds of hors d'oeuvres, and you can't eat/don't like what you're offered, you're stuck. They also may run-out of what you're looking for, by the time the server gets to you.

There's usually an open bar, during the cocktail hour. Booze without food, isn't ideal.

Appetizers are the first, served course. We had a choice of soup, fresh fruit, ravioli, etc.

I love salad but I don't think I would even notice if it was missing.

Keep the salad cut something else.

@Pancakes, I think Dreamer and I both interpreted the OP's post as saying 2-3 pieces of appetizers per person. Not 2-3 options, but basically 2-3 crustini (for example) per person. If that is the case, then that is way too little for an hour of cocktails. Now if it is 2-3 options with multiple servings of each option, that is different. Maybe we just need more clarification.

@minerva yeah it's 2-3 options with multiple servings of each. I like salad too but I know it's not a big deal to me. I'm seeing it's a big deal to most but not all.

Most people I know will get salad or whatever entrée they choose. If salad is included in the entrée great, if not no big deal.

@OP Ah okay...in that case, I think you can forgo salad providing your entrees are well-sized. Ultimately, people won't leave your wedding and say "hmm...wasn't it odd they didn't have salad?" Seriously, people won't notice or care.
