Do people really need salad??

Hi All!

We are planning a hotel wedding with about 150 guests. The hotel doesn't allow us to bring outside food or drinks. I'm looking for ways to cut costs. The venue charges $6pp (not including taxes and service fees) for a basic salad. Do people really need the salad? We're having 2-3 hors d'oeuvres during cocktail hour and a plated dinner. I'm hoping to get rid of the salad. Are my guests going to miss not having a salad served before dinner?

Thanks so much for any advice!

I guess I'm used to the venue only preparing one per person. If half the people ahead of you take 2 each, you could get none. That might have happened at the wedding where we went hungry. I know I'm usually famished, by the time the cocktail hour food is served.

P.S. We had 8 passed hors d'oeuvres, a fruit tower, grilled vegetable and cheese/cracker displays, etc. My Mom paid for a couple more vegetarian hors d'oeuvres, and then didn't see them. Later my grandmother told her how that the mini grilled cheese were so delicious, that she ate two. LOL!

I would probably skip the salad.... YES, I like salad, but I wouldn't be offended if I didn't receive one at a wedding. Especially with appetisers and if there are veggies with the main dish. No one is going to have an awful time at your wedding because there is no salad!

If you are not comfortable with the price, its simple. Don't do it.

I find often times that wedding or event salads are just a small serving of spring mix with a tomato wedge and dressing. Its probably not going to be gourmet. Sure, people will eat it, but no one is going to be upset that they didn't get it. Trust me Smiley smile

    I think its totally ok!

I wouldn't miss it, and when I attend weddings, I see a lot of half-eaten salads. At $6 a plate that would kill me to see that. It does seem a little pricey for salad, but my salad was just included in the overall cost so I'm not really sure what an average price is. It is pretty common to have salad though so some people might be a little caught off guard if they sit down for dinner and the entrée immediately comes out.

It all depends on what the rest of your menu looks like. I am a vegetarian with a soy allergy, so salads are often the only thing I can eat at a wedding. If you're planning to be flexible with guests' food restrictions and you have some good veggies in your entree and app options, I think it would be ok without salad. BUT if you don't have many veggies in the rest of your menu, keep the salad. People need green things Smiley smile

I'd skip the salad for sure! People won't miss it at ALL - once that main course is put in front of them they're not going to think "but....salad?" they'll be thinking "ooh, real hot food to put in my face!" Those with dietary restrictions need to make it known way in advance so they can be accommodated and you don't waste money on regular food they won't/can't eat.

Seriously, no one will notice a lack of salad. And the rule for appetizers is 3-4 pieces pp if serving for an hour before a full meal. I've been at weddings where hors d'oeuvres were so lavishly served people only picked at their dinners, which was a huge waste of food AND money.

I would miss it.bi often prefer the salad over the main course. BUT $6 is ridiculous. Do you have any vegetarian guests?

Is it an option to cut the portion in half? Or maybe do meal cards and let people select rather they want salad or not.

If I'm being served a formal meal - especially for a plated dinner at a wedding, I would expect a salad.

I wouldn't miss it. I like salad, but wedding salads are often often not that great, and there's usually sooo much other food that I don't care if I get a salad or not.

I agree that you have to make sure guests with dietary restrictions are taken care of, but I think the alternate meal should be a little more substantial than a salad anyway.

I agree with Margaret, I would expect a salad with a plated meal at the wedding.

I would miss the salad. I would also be confused. Generally you have salad, main, dessert. I would feel like something is missing. Also some people tend to miss cocktail hour or arrive after the hors d'oeuvres. I know that is their own fault, but still. We had a lot of people go party in their hotel rooms. They arrived to cocktail hour 45 minutes in and most of the food was already eaten by those who were on time. Older relatives went home to nap between events and arrived in time for dinner. Both groups appreciated having their salad arrive near the start of the reception.

I would miss a salad as well. But, our salads are only like$3-4, so $6 does add major cost

I don't know if I would miss it but I would find it very strange to not have a salad at a plated dinner. That just seems odd, like it's only plated for the sake of being plated not because you could actually afford it.

People don't "need" anything, it depends on how you want to host. That being said you know your guests and budget best.

I think you could cut it out. As much as I love salads I would rather save room for other food.

I had a birthday party with 20 people at a steak house we had appetizers and everyone got a side salad most salads where untouched everyone else eat about half. And most of my family are salad people.

I would expect a salad, I might think it was strange that there wasn't one, but I wouldn't miss it. As long as the food is good, I think you would be fine without the salad.

Our salad was one of my favorite parts of our menu. Plus for super picky eaters, like me, it was my saving grace. I could count on the salad being something I could eat at other weddings I've attended.
