My first attempt at the hanger thing :) *update in comments*

Tach, on June 24, 2011 at 5:50 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 18

What do you guys think?

I like it, but the only thing is the wires that I found at AC Moore were "18 so it was only enough for Mrs. D, so the ozier is done with a separate piece of wire.

Does anyone know a good way to attach them? Right now they're held together with clear tape (I know, kinda ghetto) since I don't know how else to keep them together.

Cant you buy bulk wire so you dont have to tape the pieces together?

otherside, do you know of anyone with a sodering gun? you can *possibly* tack the two pieces together that way.

    Looks nice!

You can pick up wire at craft stores and hardware stores, that is what i would suggest doing.

You can buy some stuff called JD Weld (I pretty sure thar\t's the name!) It's a two-part glue type stuff that will work on metal. You can but it at any hardware store. It looks pretty good, considering you had to make a Z! I'm impressed, can't wait to see it finished!

Thanks! I'll try to look for that stuff or see if I can find a longer one that's 18 gauge. I did go to Lowes but they only had 16 and 20 gauge.

@Savanna the z was actually easier than I thought it would be Smiley smile

I think it would probably be cheaper and possibly even easier to just buy a longer piece of wire rather than trying to connect the two pieces.

I agree I tried looking for longer one but couldn't find the correct gauge. Maybe I'll try Home Depot :/

That is really good! I do have a few suggestions if you are open to them. I made one for my sister and then ended up making them for a few women on here too (I make wire jewelry so it wasn't a huge transition). What gauge wire are you using? Joannes sells 14 guage wire that is 3 yards long and is dead soft. The hanger will be much more stable if you use one single strand of wire.

As for attaching the wire to the hanger your best bet is to drill a hole in a wooden hanger. I just use the second smallest drill bit in my husband's black and decker kit. I can't tell you the exact size but it fits the 14 gauge just about perfect. Then use superglue to keep it in place. They have industrial strenght kinds but honestly you should probably be fine with whatever type you have lying around as too much pulling will mess the wire up before it did the glue.

You CAN make an all metal hanger but for it to support the weight of your dress you will need much harder wire which is a pain.

Mrs. Kline, thank you for your suggestions, I do appreciate them. I used 18 gauge stem wire from AC Moore. For some reason they didn't have many different ones so I bought the one that has 18" stems. I'll go back to the store and see if I can get a longer one and try again.

Thank you ladies for you advice Smiley smile

The one I purchased, the ends of the wire are wrapped about 3 times to the hanger itself... seems to be holding up very nicely Smiley smile You did a great job on yours BTW!

..."as for measuring the wire, for a short name like 4 letters i went with 60 inches and added 10-12 inches for each additional letter in the name (a hanger for gina would be 60 inches, one for rosie would be 70-72.. and so on) that will be more than enough."

I copied that off this site....

Here is a pic of the one I made for Courtney. I used 'wrapped' wire, as it goes better with the theme...(rustic)

Here's mine! I used wire from the craft store (one long continuous piece) and then inserted the two ends where the normal rod for the hanger would be. (Hot glued in place)

I am also doing my bms so I did their names and now I'm trying to figure out how to attach it to the hangers

This is what I have so far. I didn't think to use a hot glue gun so I'll have to try that.

    Thanks!

Soo what do you guys think is a better execution?

I have the one in the previous comment with the curvy wires and this one with ribbon.

It was pretty easy to do the names I am having the hardest time getting them on the hanger Smiley sad

Should I just use hot glue and attach it to the hanger that way?
