I know the location of your wedding makes a difference when it comes to the costs of catering; however, I was curious what your costs are and what that includes. It might also be nice for future users to see this thread down the line so they can get an idea of what to expect price-wise, as catering should really be at least 50% of your budget.

So to make it simple...

1. How much are you paying per person?

2. What h'orderves does it include? (If any: passed / stationed)

3. What dinner does it include? (buffet or plated / # courses / # of different choices)

4. Does it include alcohol?

5. What type of cuisine is it?

6. (optional) What is your location?

- I'll start us off! -

1. $60

2. 6 passed apps

3. Buffet / 6 meal options

4. No

5. American

6. Connecticut

    1. About 80pp
    2. I think it was fruit and cheeses for the cocktail hour but nothing passed or heavier
    3. Plated - choice of 3 meat entrees (or vegetarian), 2 sides and salad. Also includes coffee bar at the end of the night
    4. Alcohol not included
    5. I think she called it something like “upscale comfort food” but it’s not comfort food. Basically was just a compromise to have delicious, simple food with “upscale quality and service”. Whatever it is sounds delicious.

I am having two caterers. One is for the cocktail hour and bartenders (for whole event) and the other is dinner only. Maybe like some others my total cost also includes labor and dinnerware. This is assuming 150 people as well.

    3. What dinner does it include? (buffet or plated / # courses / # of different choices) Buffet. 3 choices of main dish (of course some people will try multiples), 4 sides, green salad, rolls and cornbread and iced tea, sweet tea and lemonade.

    4. Does it include alcohol? No

    5. What type of cuisine is it? Apps are a variety I guess and dinner is southern BBQ.

    6. (optional) What is your location? South central PA

Exactly what I've been thinking.... Smiley winking We're in So Cal, so I guess that's the biggest difference. ~$155 pp, including tax & gratuity: 5 passed apps, 3 course plated dinner, 5.5 hours mid-level open bar, coffee service, etc. (All inclusive, so includes beautiful venue with multiple site options for both ceremony & reception [depending on weather], excellent staff, all furnishings, etc.) Still....

Mine is a similar PP cost, but doesn't include the cost of my venue ($12k) or the alcohol since I'm buying that and bringing it in. I'm seeing a lot in the $30-$50 range and literally the least expensive caterer I have found is still $110 per person. I feel like I'm missing something.

    1. How much are you paying per person?

For cocktail hour and dinner, it was about $45/pp before taxes and fees. Adding in the cake and late-night pizza (separate vendors) brings it to about $60/pp.

    2. What h'orderves does it include? (If any: passed / stationed)

We had seven options, some passed, some stationary. Some light like chips/dip and caprese skewers, some heavy like bbq sliders and chicken strips.

    3. What dinner does it include? (buffet or plated / # courses / # of different choices)

    Plated- salad/bread, entree, two sides

    4. Does it include alcohol?

Not in the cost above. We had a full mid-range open bar through our caterer though.

    5. What type of cuisine is it?

    American

My guess is she isn't making them. My family also wanted to to cook for our wedding. Which would be fine if we were doing a simple back yard wedding. My aunt had a simple church wedding and people from the family brought sides and they provided the meat. There's nothing wrong with it if it works for them.
