Didn't get the diamond size memo?

Future Mrs. A., on December 19, 2010 at 11:07 AM Posted in Planning 0 62

Hey all! I haven't posted in a while due to college but my semester's over (now I will just be student teaching in the spring!) Glad to be back!

Anyhow, during the past few months a number of my friends have gotten engaged. Just about every ring is at least a carat if not more. My one friend has sixty some smaller diamonds around her band to boot. My main diamond is a half carat and the smaller diamonds in the band come to .25 carat. But for some reason I'm beginning to feel like I missed the memo that no one gets that size of a diamond anymore. My FH and I were at my one engaged friend's house who has a huge diamond and all of her friends wanted to try on her ring and asked her about her wedding plans. FH and I tried to chime in but no one even wanted to see my ring and no one seemed to care about anything we said.

I'm debating on whether to get an upgraded diamond in the future. Because FH and I still need to graduate from college this year, I definitely can't condone upgrading

Don't worry about the size of other peoples diamonds. Heck, some of those "diamonds" may actually be CZ's. LOL! Also, how many of your friends went in to debt to buy their rings?

A ring does not make the bride, nor the wedding. :-)

Now... But I wanted some advice.. .Has anyone else upgraded? Or has anyone else had a similar situation? Or am I just being too observant of other rings lol Don't get me wrong, I love my ring! I just am starting to feel like .5 carat was below the average size and I didn't know that. Any comments would be helpful!

Thanks Kathy! That's kind of what me and FH have been talking about. I'm not a materialistic person either, so went we went ring shopping I picked something I knew he could afford because I just wanted to be engaged! The ring wasn't as big of a deal to me then

Sounds to me like you have a little ring envy. Do you love your ring? I personally have no engagement ring, we used my grandmothers custom G ring as a temporary and I have a plain gold band for my wedding band. I couldn't be happier with it. I know the commercially the e-ring is supposed to be a symbol of $$, but isn't it truly just a symbol of the love you share with each other? Is that love measured by the size of the diamond, or by the promise that came with it? If you think it's measured by the size of the diamond, your FH might be a little hurt by that.

I know alot of 'older' coupes who've upgraded for a 5 or 10 year or whatever annivrsary.

And this is a case where size truly doesn't matter. Would you rather have a 1/2 ct. high quality ring, or a huge low quality diamond? One of my favorite engagement rings (besides me own, obviously) was barely 1/2 ct- but it was bueatiful and looked amazing on the girl's hand.

And why does it matter if the diamond size is below average if the husband quality is above average?

My fiance got me a half carate diamond and I have about .25 of diamonds around the band as well. He preferred to get me a beautiful half carat diamond that sparkles like there is no tomorrow then a bigger lower quality diamond. I have a friend who got a one carat diamond. And she loves my ring because her diamond has no where near the luster of mine. I prefer my smaller beautiful diamond!

Dont worry about others think! every girl has there own thoughts on dimonds and etc and sure all us want something bigger and better but to those that cant afford at the moment its hard and just take a look at your ring again & say to yourself " im the luckiest girl to be marry my FH" its all within you both uniting

im sorry those others treated you that way it is dissapointing but, dont worry about them as long as you and FH is happy no one can replace that. cheer up

My e-ring is 5/8 total weight. The main stone is 1/4 and there are several smaller diamonds on the sides. I absolutely LOVE it. I have small hands, and would never want a main stone that is bigger than 1/2 ct. I might upgrade to a 1/2 ct for our 10th anniversary or something, but I am very happy with my 1/4 ct for now.

If you were happy with your ring when he gave it to you, I would not let your friends' larger rings change your opinion Smiley smile

I have a half carat center stone with smaller diamonds around... Total carat weight is about 1 ct. I love my ring because I have small hands and it's unique... plus, the marquise shows well for its size. Smiley tongue All my friends have larger stones, but they all paid an arm and a leg, and most are just simple solitaires.

I'm sorry, I feel like you girls think I am a super jealous person and i'm really not. I'm not a flashy or showy person either, that's why I didn't ask FH for something super expensive. And yes, I do love my ring @Mrs. Lesenski - I picked it out lol! I just didn't realize how common it was for future brides to get larger carat diamonds nowadays. Just wondering if anyone has had similar experiences. The experience at my friends house somehow made me feel like people don't take my wedding seriously due to the size of my ring and the fact that it's not till march 2012. But you are certainly right @meghan B! My FH is certainly way above average! Smiley smile

Thanks guys! Yeah my diamond is of very good quality - so that is true, I certainly wouldn't want to upgrade to something bigger of lesser quality just because it is bigger. That's a good point, thanks!

I love my ring because my DS put a lot of time, thought, money, and consideration into picking it out for me. I also adore my DS. I would never, ever, ever want to change either. And do I know people with bigger, flashier, more expensive, more perfect rings, of course I do. Would I swap my DS's ring for any of their rings, no more than I would swap my DS for any of their DSs, NEVER.

Excellent point, Fun bride T... I was just talking to my mom about that... my reservation about upgrading would be my hesitation to have my ring lose that sentimental value, ya know? Because this ring with this diamond was the one he proposed with Smiley smile and that's special to me

Future Mrs. A your ring is beautiful and looks so good on your hand. Love your nails too! By no means did I think you were jealous. I understand where you are coming from. Just about evereone I know has a bigger ring but I love mine. I picked it out as well and I love it. It looks just right on my dainty hands. I'm sorry you've had that experience with your friends.

@Katebonnykate your ring is so pretty!

No no, i have a smaller diamond like the other girls, i too went for quality over quantity (picked it out with FH)..got round diamonds that are much more sparkly.. and wisely didn't feel the need to go in debt over it..ya i wouldn' t upgrade either, like you said because of the sentimental value. IMHO i think the huge diamonds look gaudy and your friends are being jerks..unless it was the fact that the other girl got engaged after you, that could have been more what the excitement was about rather than the ring size..don't let them bring you down!! :-)

Mine is only .5 of a carat, and I don't know the exact price but I know it was more than $2,000. I think that is a lot to spend, especially in college. Everybody I know was impressed with it, but they probably don't know anyone else getting engaged in college. I think it's ridiculous that men have to feel pressured to spend thousands of dollars on a ring, just so their fiancee doesn't feel inferior. And I also have very tiny hands so I guess it fits well Smiley smile This is so cheesy, but it's not about the price/size of the ring, it's just a SYMBOL. In the end, they all mean the same thing: you're getting married!
