Dessert bar in place of cake?

maliburedneck, on January 26, 2012 at 3:46 PM Posted in Planning 0 20

How many of you would prefer a dessert bar in place of a cake at a wedding? We would still do the traditional cake cutting etc and have a small cake (maybe to feed 40-60) for those who prefer it but after meeting with a bakery today I'm really leaning towards a dessert bar.

What we are thinking is a combination of small pies, cookies, cakes, hollow strawberries filled with chocolate, mini cheesecakes, hollow strawberries filled with a cheese cake filling, cupcakes and homemade caramel popcorn. I would also do some sugar free options for the diabetics.

The more I think about it the more I think this is going to be the way we go. Opinions? Thoughts?

I love the idea and seriously considered it. But it was more than I wanted to spend. I say go for it's in your budget.

We're doing a dessert bar! We never eat cake at weddings so why have one at ours? Our caterer is providing it. There will be a bunch of little bites to choose from. Our venue also has an oven on site so I'm going to try and get warm chocolate chip cookies on the menu.

I'm going to discuss it with FH tonight but I really think we will go this way.

We did both...a small cake for the traditional cake cutting and then a dessert bar with candy.

We had cheesecake bites, brownies, ice cream cone cupcakes, bonbons, rock candy, M&Ms, suckers, gumballs and some other candies I can't remember...it was a huge hit and we had nothing left!

    Here's how it turned out.

You can do a ton of other ideas too...cookie bar, popcorn bar, ice cream bar...options are endless! Smiley smile

I don't know if I would PREFER it necessarily since I love cake, but I love other desserts too. Plus, you can do so many cute things with a dessert bar! I think it's a great idea!

We are going to have 4 small cakes, because I love cake and then a dessert table with mini eclairs, cannolis, brownies, etc. I'm excited for the cakes! We picked strawberry for our cutting cake, banana (FH's favorite), carrot and coconut. Yummmm!

I love this idea. I just think that a dessert bar looks so sweet(wasn't trying to make a pun, but that really is the best word to describe it). It's starting to look like I'll have both. The venues I'm looking at are pretty all-inclusive and they include a viennese dessert display as well as a wedding cake.

You can have so much fun with a dessert buffet! I'm not a cake fan either, but you could always have a small cake to cut, with cake pops or cupcakes and a variety of other favorites for serving. Here's a link with some info about how to put a dessert table together that might help:
