Credit card for wedding expenses?

6-1-18, on May 12, 2017 at 9:11 AM Posted in Planning 1 55

Has anyone else used a rewards credit card to pay their vendors? I'm thinking of applying for the capital one venture card to earn miles for our honeymoon. You earn miles on everything and if you spend $3000 on the first three months, you get 40,000 miles. I have no idea what that equates to but I can pay my photographer and make a venue payment and I'll be at the 3000. I'm not planning on going into debt, I'll pay it off every month from my wedding savings account. Has anyone done this and is it worth it?

We did- we got the chase sapphire.

It's good for travel too- it paid for our airlines. A lot of our vendors wouldn't take CC- or only down payments- but we definitely used it.

I have been! My credit card just has a straight 1.5% cash back. So I use the cash back to pay off some of the amount charged and the rest of the money is sitting in savings so I pay off the credit card right after I use it. For me it's a win and helps me pay a little less on my wedding!!

We are using discover (reward dollars) and capital one for miles. It's working great for us. We pay the balance as soon as we swipe the card.

Caveat- as long as you don't go crazy with it- and you can pay it all off on a timely manner- don't carry a balance etc etc.

At least where I am, most vendors require checks or cash. But for the small stuff, I have been using a rewards credit card and paying it off every month.

We have a card that gives us travel points. All related wedding expenses go on there. Most vendors want cash for the down payment and payments so just be aware.

ETA: We have saved enough points for either the honeymoon flight or flights for a trip after the wedding.

Lots of us have. I prefer receiving cash back though, so I have the Chase Freedom Unlimited, and I don't just use it for wedding related expenses. I try to leave a balance when it hits my credit report so I can increase my score. Last month, one of my credit scores went up 41 points.

I use Chase Freedom for everything and cash in the points every month for a gift card to a store I need something at ($25-$50 per month usually). There's tons of ways to earn bonus points too, and they can all be redeemed for travel as well.

40000 miles is only $400 in travel reimbursement. I have that card.

We used the same card for absolutely everything wedding related to keep track of how much got spent--plus to get the rewards since we were spending so much in a short period...as soon as charges were made to the card, we paid them off. We also went this route should there be any charges that needed to be disputed with a vendor.

I use my credit cards for everything thing. I have 2, one for flyer miles and one for cash back. As long as you can use credit cards responsibly I would absolutely take advantage of the rewards.

I applied for a credit card to help pay wedding expenses. It's got a fairly small limit. So it's not like I can go too crazy, but I'd be hurting without it.

It's definitely a good idea to do this, this make sure you don't let yourselves get in serious debt - have the funds on hand if you can and pay it off ASAP. DH and I wanted to do this but it turned out that a lot of our bigger vendors didn't take credit cards (they wanted cheques), or if they did they didn't take AMEX. It was super frustrating.

All my CCs are cash back so.. yup, rewards! I've already gotten $100 in cash back just from all the deposits & down payments to vendors

I got a Marriott Visa card to get the points, and FH has a Delta Visa card. So we paid for both our hotel and flight to Maui for our honeymoon just off points! Definitely a great idea, if you pay it off!

We used our capitol one to get rewards and it's one of the credit card companies that doesn't charge any foreign transaction fees so we are using it for our honeymoon too.

Totally! Especially our venue. We already got 4 credit cards to pay it off to maximize the points and the venue knows about it! They even encourage it!

We both got Hyatt cards which have a sign-up bonus of 2 free nights at ANY of their hotels. We are using our 4 nights at a fancy schmancy hotel in Paris for our honeymoon that is normally like $1200 per night!!!!! So excited!! We are also using Chase Sapphire Reserve to bank travel points.

We have JetBlue and are planning on potentially getting Marriott as well to do this! However, as PPs have already said, it is important to still pay off the balance monthly.
