This seems so silly to me, but I am catching a lot of flak from friends and family for wanting to have a chocolate frosted cake. Our reception package comes with the option of a few different bakeries and choices of cake, filling, and frosting. The bakery that we liked best makes cupcakes with the filling of the would be cake used as the frosting for the tasting. I am not adventurous with cake flavors and it just so happened that both of our favorite was the classic yellow cake with dark chocolate fudge "filling". Great! Well, I absolutely hate vanilla icing. If I am served a slice of cake with vanilla frosting, I eat around the frosting like a 6 year old and not eat the part of the cake that touches it. I know, it's ridiculous. I asked my fiancé if he would be ok with having them frost the cake with the same fudge that they are using as the filling since I hate vanilla, and he was on board with it. Well, ever since it came up in conversation at a family function, everyone is insisting that we must have a white frosted cake. Why? because it's traditional and taboo to have a dark wedding cake. Umm... come again? I flat out said "Well, sorry, but I want to be able to eat and enjoy my own wedding cake" and yet, everyone still is giving so much unwanted solicitation on "cake etiquette". They keep saying that the guests won't be happy with it.

Anyone else hear of this or have an opinion on the matter? I mean, it's yellow cake with chocolate frosting, not pistachio cake with cherry filling and maple butternut frosting. (photos of random chocolate wedding cakes off Google images for reference).

That's a good idea to get the variety you are looking for, while still having that traditional "look".

You and me both! I was like, "cake eti… what?" I suppose they'll be plenty more surprises along the way to the altar.

That's a good point. It's like that old saying, "you can't teach an old dog new tricks". I suppose some people are just stuck in their ways and antiquated thought process.

Hahahaha, weirdos indeed. We originally were going to have a dessert station in addition to the cake, but life happens, and so we had to cut back a decent chunk of the budget. The cake is included in our package, so the dessert options were the first to be nixed and there isn't any wiggle room. I'm sure they'll survive though.

Hahahahaha!!!! Ok good, I'm going to use you as an example when the black limo rolls up and Grandma starts spraying it with holy water, praying that I didn't just curse the marriage.

That's a good point, but I have no intention of letting one little delicious chocolate morsel escape my clutches. Smiley xd

Who cares it’s what you and your groom want not them. Do what makes you happy. If they don’t want to eat it oh well. More for you to take home.

I think that one of the most important element in a wedding, is the cake. It symbolize the gouple providing for each other, not for the guest. So, get a flavor you and the groom love. I am having a guava cream cheese cake, buttercream, no fondant. That is what my fiancè and I like. Plus, I noticed not too many people like fondant, and it is left on the plate. Last, but not least; cakes covered with the traditional fondant are made a few days ahead. You bet, if you get chocolate icing the whole cake will be fresher, since it takes less time to put together.

It's your wedding! I think it's awesome! I like how it looks. i'm not a big white frosting fan either to be honest. If we go more rustic I may go with a chocolate frosted cake

I would kill for that cake, my future husband picked the cake and I was fine with that because he really does not like chocolate but my God I would kill for a chocolate cake

I never heard of that taboo! Then again, I haven't heard of a lot of ridiculous things I'm learning about while planning this wedding... In any case, we're having our cake tasting this weekend, and we did select a few chocolate flavor options to try! The bakery woman said that they can make white icing taste like chocolate, and it's not traditionally as clear cut as people think (white=vanilla, brown=chocolate), so maybe that's worth looking into that option for you? But really, it's your cake so it's your call!

Thank you so much! That was a beautiful way of explaining it. I have no idea what a guava cream cheese cake tastes like, but I agree with you that it's yours and your fiancé's wedding at the end of the day. You're right about the fondant too. All it is, is sugar paste. Way too sweet for my taste as well.

First of all, I agree with everyone: your wedding your cake. If you do want to appease people, maybe look into a white chocolate? Or having white decorations on the cake? It’s so dumb what people complain about. It is a day to celebrate you and your Fh (husband on that day) so be happy with whatever you decide and if anyone says something tell them they can go ahead and have their own wedding (again in some instances)
