This seems so silly to me, but I am catching a lot of flak from friends and family for wanting to have a chocolate frosted cake. Our reception package comes with the option of a few different bakeries and choices of cake, filling, and frosting. The bakery that we liked best makes cupcakes with the filling of the would be cake used as the frosting for the tasting. I am not adventurous with cake flavors and it just so happened that both of our favorite was the classic yellow cake with dark chocolate fudge "filling". Great! Well, I absolutely hate vanilla icing. If I am served a slice of cake with vanilla frosting, I eat around the frosting like a 6 year old and not eat the part of the cake that touches it. I know, it's ridiculous. I asked my fiancé if he would be ok with having them frost the cake with the same fudge that they are using as the filling since I hate vanilla, and he was on board with it. Well, ever since it came up in conversation at a family function, everyone is insisting that we must have a white frosted cake. Why? because it's traditional and taboo to have a dark wedding cake. Umm... come again? I flat out said "Well, sorry, but I want to be able to eat and enjoy my own wedding cake" and yet, everyone still is giving so much unwanted solicitation on "cake etiquette". They keep saying that the guests won't be happy with it.

Anyone else hear of this or have an opinion on the matter? I mean, it's yellow cake with chocolate frosting, not pistachio cake with cherry filling and maple butternut frosting. (photos of random chocolate wedding cakes off Google images for reference).

Originally we were going to have a dessert station in addition to the wedding cake. We had to slash the budget due to life happening and so the sweet station was the first to go. Not sure if it is in your budget or not, but maybe you could do something similar? You could get some chocolate cupcakes or even a couple of small cakes like a chocolate, strawberry shortcake, and a red velvet? Maybe find somewhere to sneak that chocolate in?

Thank you for the suggestion! I have tried white chocolate frosting and I am not a fan. I'm not even a huge chocolate buttercream person either. I love rich dark chocolate like ganache or super dark chocolate fudge. The bakery making our cake makes a killer dark chocolate fudge, so that's the route we are going.

I'm thinking about nixing the cake and going for brownies in the shape of a cake. Whoever doesn't like it that's not your problem. They can do whatever they want for their wedding and so can you. I'm sure they won't ask for your opinion or care if you like their cake. "You can please some but not all". No one is going to say "I went to a really nice wedding but they had chocolate frosting on the cake"😩. It's 2019, do you.

That looks so beautiful, and it looks so good. I love chocolate. We are having cupcakes at our wedding and one of the 5 flavors will be chocolate. If a guest don't like chocolate don't eat it. Even our top tier is a large double fudge chocolate.

Its your wedding you should have whatever you want

I think you are awesome for going with a yellow cake and chocolate frosting. I am exactly like you and will pick around the frosting and only eat the cake that has not come in contact with any frosting (unless it is chocolate). We are only doing a very small wedding cake for the purpose of doing the ceremonial cake slicing and feeding a bite to each other, so that will probably be either yellow or chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. Guests will have an assortment of choices from a mini dessert bar.

Get whatever cake makes you happy. Let them eat around the chocolate just like you have to eat around the vanilla.

I like the brownie idea. It's very true that there will always be someone who doesn't like this and someone that doesn't like that. Thanks!

Do whatever you want. We are doing cupcakes, 1/2 are french vanilla cake with blueberries, and the other 1/2 are chocolate cake with peanut butter chips, both will have whipped cream frosting, with the vanilla being purple, and the chocolate being orange. It's what he and I wanted. If the guests don't like it, they don't have to eat them. Oh, and the small cutting cake is red velvet with a grey color cream cheese frosting. We are having a Halloween theme wedding, so there is a lot that isn't the standard/traditional way, and we love it. Besides, we are paying for it, not them.

I had the same discussion with someone about the food. I have the idea in my head for BBQ food (I am a VERY picky eater and I LOVE BBQ) and they basically told me it was ridiculous and I need to find more traditional food. I told them the same thing about wanting to be able to enjoy the food at my own wedding. Not to mention, BBQ is way less expensive than the traditional options. So do whatever will make you happy. I have never in my life heard that chocolate cake was taboo! HAHA plus, yellow cake with chocolate icing is like my favorite!

Are you kidding me? I'd love this! and to tell you the truth, the heck with everyone else. I mean you guys are the one's buying it, and yea it's cool for others to eat it, but if they don't you'd be the one's going home with all the leftovers anyway.

We weren't doing a cake but a dessert station instead (pies, cupcakes, candy, lemon bars, etc).

    You do you!

I grew up on chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, it's the only way I eat my mini cupcakes my mom has to make me each Christmas. Though I also do like chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting but in general I'm not a huge frosting person I normally eat around all the frosting and just eat the cake part, ha! My nieces pick up my slack and eat my frosting.

    Good luck!

A chocolate wedding cake sounds so good. It also is your wedding, so whatever you decide. Just like you, if someone doesn't like the chocolate they can eat around it. Or not have a piece of the cake.
