This seems so silly to me, but I am catching a lot of flak from friends and family for wanting to have a chocolate frosted cake. Our reception package comes with the option of a few different bakeries and choices of cake, filling, and frosting. The bakery that we liked best makes cupcakes with the filling of the would be cake used as the frosting for the tasting. I am not adventurous with cake flavors and it just so happened that both of our favorite was the classic yellow cake with dark chocolate fudge "filling". Great! Well, I absolutely hate vanilla icing. If I am served a slice of cake with vanilla frosting, I eat around the frosting like a 6 year old and not eat the part of the cake that touches it. I know, it's ridiculous. I asked my fiancé if he would be ok with having them frost the cake with the same fudge that they are using as the filling since I hate vanilla, and he was on board with it. Well, ever since it came up in conversation at a family function, everyone is insisting that we must have a white frosted cake. Why? because it's traditional and taboo to have a dark wedding cake. Umm... come again? I flat out said "Well, sorry, but I want to be able to eat and enjoy my own wedding cake" and yet, everyone still is giving so much unwanted solicitation on "cake etiquette". They keep saying that the guests won't be happy with it.

Anyone else hear of this or have an opinion on the matter? I mean, it's yellow cake with chocolate frosting, not pistachio cake with cherry filling and maple butternut frosting. (photos of random chocolate wedding cakes off Google images for reference).

I think the chocolate cake is gorgeous. Who cares if it’s not traditional, you’re never going to please everyone so go with what you want it’s YOUR weddings.

If you want chocolate then don't budge! If you really want a compromise how about a white chocolate frosting?

So what makes you happy! I’m so tired of family members making these sort of comments because I understand it makes you then think of what should you really do. Get the chocolate! It’s fun and you can still make it “fancy” looking.

Do what makes you happy! Who cares if it is not traditional? Your wedding, your choice. I am a chocolate girl myself so I would be all over it. I don't want to hear other people's opinions either so I try to keep our wedding details to ourselves, unless maybe I need help with something. They don't want my cake? Then they can just not eat it.

Tell them to get a life lol. This is your wedding and your FH. If you dont like white frosting, then get what you want. You don't have to explain yourself at all. At least your fh agrees with you and is on your side. There is no etiquette for cake lol. That's strange. I would say get what you want and like

I’m having a small chocolate frosted cake (gluten free) in addition to a larger white cake. I think it’s totally fine to do chocolate frosted at a wedding! Go with your preference, it’s your day!

OMG your cake topper!!! that is adorable!!

OP - You do you! If guests are so upset can you get a sheet cake with vanilla icing. I agree you definetly should not have to deal with a cake you won't like at your wedding

Thanks! We haven’t ordered it yet but I’m obsessed. We have 5 animals and I figured this was a cute way to include them. We are getting married on Halloween so I figured it’d make a cute decoration in the future!

I love it!! Ours is a mocha cake with mocha buttercream frosting. It looks great and tastes amazing. Yours is totally fun and very you. It's part of your personality that makes your wedding yours. They can have whatever cake they want when they have a wedding lol! Stick with it. They'll get used to it.

Hahahaha!!! You speak the truth. I know there will be "Negative Nancy's", but the whole hoopla about the color of the cake really threw me off. Complaints about the color of the bridesmaids dresses, flowers, décor, my dress? That I expected to hear nonsense about. But when I said that we were going to have a chocolate frosted cake you would have thought I just announced that we decided to get married in a nudist compound so they didn't have to worry about the dress code. The horror on their faces was priceless, and all over the thought of a "brown" wedding cake.

I have seen photos of a naked cake, but not a half naked cake and I am having trouble picturing it. By half, do you mean like half chocolate and half vanilla or half naked and half frosted?
