China - Do you use it? If so, how often?

Mrswilson2012, on January 6, 2012 at 12:21 PM Posted in Planning 0 16

My FI & I finished up our Macy's registry online yesterday and we have an appointment at BBB on Sunday to start our second one. Registering online was pretty easy except when we got the china section.

We decided on a china set to add to our registry, but I am not sure its worth it. I dont see us ever using it. We have really nice everyday dishware already. The only china set we liked is pretty expensive.

Did you/are you going to register for china? How often do you use it? Do you think its worth it?

I bought myself china years ago and use it everyday. Srsly. I think it's worth it but my advice is to buy it only if you plan to enjoy it ore than once a year. Life is short!

We did, but on Amazon. We also liked one set at Macy's but I thought it was incredibly overpriced. So we got one really nice set from Amazon for much less money. We use it occasionally. I like having a nice set for special occasions, but I could have lived without it too.

I have a china set that was given to me from my Grandmother and we also have a very, very expensive china set handed down from FH's family. I'm sure we'll use it for special occasions eventually. Right now we have a little kitchen with barely enough room to store things as it is so it's all in storage.

If you want to have china, you also need to consider getting a china cabinet and special storage containers to store it all.

OMG I'm a fine china hoarder. Smiley smile I collected dishes in college. We use china every single day- the only times we don't are when we use giant soup/coffee mugs, or when we use our snack plates to reheat pizza or whatnot. I would register for 5 more china patterns but FH won't let me. Smiley smile

If you're on the fence you can always register for a few place settings and serving pieces to test the water, then add to the collection as time goes on. But there's no rule saying you must have china to be grownups. If you are pretty sure you won't use it, I would skip it.

Also- the china patterns we use everyday are all-white, very modern looking, and can be thrown in the dishwasher/microwave. We also have a few family sets that are more ornate, and we keep those packed up for special occasions.

I bought myself 8 place settings of china from Macy's when it was on sale (it was seriously like $100). Because it's very simple (just gold rims) and can go in the dishwasher, I wind up using it whenever we have company or just feel like having a nice dinner.

I didn't register for any China because I inherited a set from my grandmother that is really nice, hand painted designs. If I hadn't gotten this set then I don't think I would register for it. I see no difference in using your regular everyday set for company but that's just me.

I feel like China is for the older crowd anyways.

My first husband and I got a full china set for our wedding, and we split it up when we divorced so now I have service for 6. I use it every time we have people over and I'm thinking of expanding the set. If you do register for china, I would register for something you really love and would like to display when you're not using. That way you can still enjoy it even if you don't have company often. I do agree with the other ladies, though: There's not a thing wrong with using nice everyday dishes for company if that's what you prefer.

We are registering for nice everyday settings, but as a Brooklyn bride with a kitchen smaller than my bathroom, there is no way we are registering for china.

FH's mom REALLY wants us too, but she told stories about people breaking hers and she has to shell out $400 for a tiny bowl. That sounds terrible to me.

I figure if we move and I want it, hopefully I can buy it myself in the future.

I inherited mine from my grandmother when she passed away. She's been gone for almost 3 years now, and I have yet to take it out of the boxes! To me, china is what you use when the boss and his wife come over for dinner and you want to impress them. Other than that, why risk chipping/breaking them? ESPECIALLY if they're family heirlooms. Idk, I just don't see an everyday use for my set. I have dishes (a full set for 10 that I got at VALUE VILLAGE) that my husband and I use every day, and I'm perfectly happy with that. They were cheap, so I don't really care if I break them or not - and I'm pretty clumsy!

We've got two sets, one that I've been collecting for years, we could serve 36 or more LOL (its common & I find it at yardsales often) and the other is FH's grandmothers. We use my set for dinner parties - as I'm not worried about breaking a piece or two. His GM's is super duper old & expensive and I'm a nervous wreck to even touch it to dust, yet alone use it. To make it worse - my mom just informed me she's selling her house & moving to FL and she's insisting that I take her TWO sets of china. I'm the only daughter of the 3 of us girls that is sentimental and will keep it in the family.

Thanks ladies! We also live in an apartment where there is no room for it, so we would have to keep it in our storage until we move, like we've done for some early wedding gifts we've already received.

We have several sets and at first I thought we'd only use them when we hosted Sunday dinners but I find that we use the less expensive and dish washer safe ones daily.

We are trying to make it a point to eat dinner together "at the table" every chance we get.

Since we have some much already we only registered for pieces we are missing like gravy bowl and large serving dishes.

My opinion on registering for it is if you don't plan on using it don't waste your time putting it on your registry.

I did register for china because I enjoy entertaining and I figured this is the one time that we might not have to pay for it ourselves :-)

Long ago and far away, when dinosaurs walked the earth and I was 18, my mother insisted that I needed to be registered for my china in preparation for my wedding. (Heck, I didn't even have a boyfriend at the time!) She took me to some department store, which has long gone out of business, and I picked out a pattern I liked (luckily still love to this day), thinking the whole process rather silly. Turns out, my mother eventually purchased 8 place settings, along with a large & small platter. All before I was 25. Oh, and still no future spouse on the horizon at the time!

I've had my china, in parts or whole, since 1979. When I was single (and thinking I would never marry), I used it often enough whenever I had guests for dinner. Now? I actually use it less that I'm married. But I still get it out a few times a year for holidays, our anniversary, or special dinners. It's a special way to set that meal apart from the everyday.

I hate china. No seriously, we have been married nine years and still have no use for it. We specifically didn't register for it, but got it anyway. It's just not us. But people who like that sort of thing should absolutely register for it. Even if you don't have the space now, it would be good to have later.
