They are decorative plates that are typically set up for a formal dinner, then each course is set on it and taken off when the person is done with that dish. I don't think they're needed for buffet, as they aren't meant to be eaten on and some people might not know that! lol

You don't need to have them. They're meant for decoration.

No, you do not need them...I'd suggest them more for a sit down dinner

Happy to know that chargers are a known item, while London Broil is not. ;-) Sorry, couldn't resist.

No, you do not need them. They are decorative and for a buffet, worthless. They are used for formal dinners, not buffets.

In an effort to make our head table a little more elegant, we have chargers, and we are having a buffet. Ours are copper.

Money is better spent elsewhere. Especially with a buffet.

Lizzie...I wouldn't use them for a backyard BBQ either. Smiley smile

At my first wedding, we had a buffet as well, and the staff served us, but we didn't have chargers.

Chargers are used under a dinner plate that is placed on the table prior to food being placed on the plate. So, for a buffet, they are truly out of place. Sure, you can use them, if you want to, but this is not a typical use for a charger.

It's pretty much like using a napkin ring with paper napkins.

    ...or a belt with suspenders.

I think they can make a table look pretty, but let's face it the average wedding buffet isn't a Mensa convention, and you'll probably have confused people trying to eat off of them.

Lol Kathy, I was thinking that when I typed that reply! lol. Smiley smile I only know what they're for because like 5 years ago I kept wanting to buy them as plates but they all said not dishwasher safe so then I had to look it up and see what they were used for! I'm obviously a country girl! Smiley smile Also, I will say London broil looks good... the chicken marsala.. probably not for me! haha

Why wouldn't you like chicken cooked in a creamy sauce with mozz cheese on it?

To answer OP question No they are not necessary for your buffet- they are a decoration to add a touch of color under the plates.

WOW Carole I haven't been on as much as I use to, it sure seems you have become bitter- did something happen? I know the overall feel of WW has changed and that's why I am not on as much. This was once a place where WW woman and men could get some solid advice and now it has become a joke!
