Changing Your Name - Do or Ditch?

Taking your new spouse's name is a tradition that has definitely been declining in popularity! As a couple, do you plan on sharing the same last name? Or are you ditching the name change tradition? (And all the paperwork that comes with it! ) Are you doing or ditching the name change tradition?...

This was a very difficult decision for as I take a lot of pride in my name. I never believed that I would change my name because it's my name and who I am. But when I got to this point in my life, I want our future family to be a unit. I want to share a name with my future children. So I decided that I'd get my name hyphenated. My fiance was ok with that at first as I explained that I want to extend my name as he is an extension of me. And vice versa. But he later explained how not fully sharing a name with me is not what he ever imagined. So I thought about it some more. I decided that I will take one last name, his. Remove my middle name and replace it with my maiden name. That was an easy decision because I have never used my middle name. I was never called by it by anyone and I don't even use it for any type of paperwork. It's only used in my most official papers (birth certificate, license, SSN.) We also decided that if/when we have a daughter, that we will use my soon to be former middle name as hers. The decision behind that is because I have a beautiful story on how I got my middle name. That way, all of these names get to be used and the story of my middle name will be passed down to our child.

I will be changing! It's very important to him and I also agree that it's a great symbol of unity to start out with!

I am changing my last name to his and I'm really excited about it! I'm a little sad for the loss of my maiden name and all that it means to me, especially now that my dad is no longer with us, but I am lucky enough that my middle name is his first name (Kim)! The thing I'm most excited about changing my name is feeling like more like a team. Team Kraus! Smiley laugh

Yes. My two daughters have my current surname, so I want to keep that connection. I'm not that fussed about my surname generally. If I had no children, I'd drop mine outright.

Anyone on here their FH has a hyphenated last name? I like the idea of us being one family unit with one last name. How do we decide which one to drop without offending anyone? The only solution I came up with is we pick a new one.

Anyone take the letters from their old names and make a new one? How did you pick a new one if you're going down that route?

I am keeping it traditional. I will take my significant other's last name. Plus he is old fashion so he would not understand if I didn't take his last name☺

I’m not changing. My name is my name and I would just feel weird having a different one! Among my friend group, it seems to be half/half people who change vs keep name.
