Changing Your Name - Do or Ditch?

Lynnie, on February 4, 2020 at 11:05 AM

Taking your new spouse's name is a tradition that has definitely been declining in popularity! As a couple, do you plan on sharing the same last name? Or are you ditching the name change tradition? (And all the paperwork that comes with it! ) Are you doing or ditching the name change tradition?...

I'm changing mine. I've never really had a strong connection to my last name, so I'm excited to change it!

I'm hyphenating. In his culture name changes aren't done, but I want to share a name with our future children, so we are compromising by me hyphenating.

    Nooooooooooooooooooooope.

Made it clear I wouldn't. FIL never did, this Should Be Known (not only is she on social media, we talk about it all the time, because her last name is *cool*). My social media has not changed.

    And yet.

People persist in assuming I changed my name.

I do accept being called "Mrs. DH's first name", though.

Definitely changing! It sounds a little weird to me, but I'm sure I'll get used to it lol. I've always looked forward to taking a new last name after getting married.

Definitely not my place to say, but don't change your name if you don't want to! Seriously!

We have no idea what to change ours too if anything. Its a long story, his last name isn't even his family name (It was his mothers from a prior marriage) So we are still struggling to figure that out. Big day is in Oct.

Yes for sure! in the beginning I wanted to hyphenate our names but if I'm being honest I didn't have the best home/family life before I met my fiancé so I'm ready to do away with my name now. My fiancé currently has his father's last name and his father wasn't the most terrific man so we are both going to change our names to his mother's family name so that we can pass on a name to our children that they can be proud of. When we were deciding this it was mostly about what name we wanted to give our children rather than ourselves so that was our thinking.

For sure! My fiancé currently has his father's last name and nobody liked him so everyone was over joyed to hear that we were changing it to his mother's maiden name. But you can always just make it up! We considered that as well just pick a name and write it on the marriage certificate and viola, new name for both of you!
