Arrrrrgh FH can't stop coughing :(

krisalicious, on April 20, 2012 at 10:27 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

He's been fighting off this cold/flu thing for over a month now. He went OOT for his b-party last weekend, and I think all the long work hours and lack of sleep and travel and stress has finally caught up with him. He just woke up looking and sounding like a hot mess. He looks like he feels so miserable, I feel terrible for him!

Anybody have any good home remedies that will help someone who refuses to take any time off work or stay in bed? Smiley smile He's on this crazy deadline right now and is worried he won't get his work done before we leave on Wednesday. I've been force-feeding him emergen-c and hot tea and I literally had to yell at him last night at 11:30 to go to bed. "Just one more email"......I woke up at 1 and he was still awake.

I'm worried he's going to get really sick, and stay sick, and be sick at the wedding. Smiley sad I know how he is. When he's on a work mission he doesn't stop.....

I thought I might have him gargle with salt water....anything else? Help!

Is it a wet or dry cough?

EDIT: He should try mucinex. It works very well. Plus losts of liquids. Not coffee, lol. Water.

Well at least a dry cough means he's getting over his illness. He need lots of water, warm water.

He could also take a cough suppressant to help relax him and give him a break.

Oh- Ginger and honey helps a ton too. Your honey's airways are inflammed. Smiley sad

Can he at least go to a doctor? I understand not wanting to get off work..but with your wedding so close it is better to get checked out before it turns into something work (aka pneumonia, etc.) It sounds like a bronchitis, which can take a while to get rid of a cough but I would get checked out just in case

Missy I totally agree with you. If this isn't over on Monday I am driving him to see a doctor myself and calling his PM to cancel his meeting.

He's a totally self-sufficient responsible guy and if I were sounding like I had the plague he would make me stay in bed but he refuses to do the same thing for himself. He refuses doctor visits. It's infuriating. We actually talked about this issue in our premarital counseling believe it or not! Smiley smile

labake I'll try the constant warm water and tea with ginger/honey approach.....

    Oy.

Kris, men are sometimes so stubborn it's unbelieveable. I think you'll be able to fix him. Although if he doesn't sleep his body can't heal!

Whenever DH or I are sick like that, we knock ourselves out with TheraFlu and sleep as much as possible.. I hate cold medicine, this is the only thing that doesn't make me feel like crap and helps me get much needed rest to recover. (sounds like a commercial almost..)

Whenever I was sick my grandma made me this tea that I swear could do magic! If you have lemon grass near you that's awesome if not just use lemon juice in the water. But you're gonna boil water (and lemon grass or juice) and a few pealed pieces of ginger, after that add some honey to it and done! Make sure he drinks it right before he goes to bed, I'm not sure why but my grandma always said it had to be the last thing I drank before going to bed.

    Hope it helps!

FH and his mom make me do Theraflu, too. They swear by it. That's good, because he refuses to go to the doctor, too, and if I sniffle he's telling me to call in sick. Frustrating!

If it's over a month now, you may want to make him go to the Dr. just in case it's whooping cough or something like that. Better safe than sorry.

Agree with all the above. Shot of whiskey or warm homemade brandy. Hope he feels better! :/

Seriously! DO THIS for a cough:

    1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

    1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

    1 Tablespoon honey

    1 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar

    2 Tablespoons water

Mix and take by the teaspoon (I would try 3 tsp first and see how it goes from there)

I have 2 kids in daycare, so we are sick frequently... best remedy for us is the vitamin c drops non stop and lots and lots of water. I dont sleep either, and I can usually be basically back to normal in 3-ish days.

Make sure hes drinking a lot of fluids.

and since its dry, i would consider a humidifier.

and do a cough expectorant, not suppressant because if he has any mucous caught up, a suppressant wont loosen it, it will thicken it and make it worse.

I'm just getting over something like this. FH works in pharmacy so he suggested I take Sudafed (or generic, I have Wal-phed) and Cepacol. Cepacol works 100x better than Halls which are nothing but sugar. They don't taste the greatest but they work.

I second Leena's remedy. I simplify it and just do juice of 1 lemon, a squirt or two of honey and fill the mug with hot water. Think of it as honey/lemon tea Smiley smile It's delicious! I felt miserable last weekend, and 4 mugs later I was totally fine.

I have a sore throat now too. Ugh.........

You need to show your FH this thread. Look at how many people care. Guilt him into going to the doc.
