Anybody do the "size smaller" gamble with their wedding dress????

MrsNrs, on March 12, 2013 at 3:58 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 40

Just wondering. Anyone find a great dress and SWORE they were gonna lose weight and bought a size smaller? How did it turn out? Any stories of anyone else? Not that I'm gonna do this..... but I wonder how often this happens and it turns out to be a disaster.. do people get a new dress before the wedding or something if it doesnt fit? I'd have a heart attack if my dress is too small! lol

I'm getting measured for my dress in 10 days! Eeep!

I always said I would never be one of those brides that ordered a size smaller.

I have been eating really healthy and have lost a few kgs but probably not all the way there. I know at the moment I am sitting between two sizes and I think it will depend on how far off the smaller one I am if I decide to order it or not. If I am too far off it in 10 days I will order the bigger size as its easier to alter it to be smaller than to alter it to be bigger.

I didn't really gamble per se, but I deliberately got measured on the first day of my period to give myself a little wiggle room size-wise. The seamstress said I was right between a 6 and an 8, so I opted the for 6. It should fit like a glove but even if it doesn't, I think I can handle losing 2-3 lbs in 15 months :-)

I was measured in between two sizes and I went with the smaller size and it fit! The consultant warned me against doing this because she said she sees girls all the time who swear they will lose weight and they end up with dresses that are way too small.

So be sure its really something you are dedicated to akd will follow through with.

The sample dress I tried on in the store fit like a glove... ok, maybe a little snug in the back. But DB ordered it for me one size up just to be safe. They said that it can be altered up to 2 sizes down. After that, if I lose too much weight (yeah, right!), then they would exchange it for a smaller dress at no extra charge.

But I think I rocked it at the weight and size I am now, so I'm not actually sweating losing anything. I need to for my health, but I won't be heartbroken if the size I ordered ends up being the size I wear that day.

Why? A dress can be altered to fit you. If you order the size "down" and happen to gain 5lbs, you could be screwed! Order the size you should order and fix it with alterations. If I had taken the dip$hit's advice that measured me, I would have had a dress that I couldn't fit my a$$ in much less my bust! I measured a 4 in the waist and 8 in bust and hips...she wanted to order a 6. I would rather have an altered dress that is comfortable than a "smaller" dress that I can't breathe in.

You NEVER know what is going to happen and follow through is not always possible.

I didn't, but I should have. I didn't want the pressure, but I'm down 10lbs already with plenty of time to go before the wedding.

Exactly what Tiedaknot said. It's forever going to be a mystery to me why the number matters.

Even if the bride loses weight, she never knows where the weight will come off and how much. What if she loses 10 lbs but all in her hips and then the dress is too tight in the boobs?

Why anyone would add that type of stress to planning a wedding is truly baffling to me.

@Tiedaknot/Mrs. S - I definitely agree. I'm not going to gamble with my dress! lol HOWEVER.... my MOH definitely did -_- and ordered a size smaller because "she's losing 10 more lbs" however.. the dress is HUGE at her bust and tight at her waist... she might just keep losing her boobs and not her waist!! SMH good thing we have plenty of time to exchange her dress! lol

I am slim already and I measured between too sizes and went for the bigger one. Under stressing usually lose weight, but I would rather be safe than sorry! Getting a smaller dress size would probably great weight loss motivation, but maybe not worth the extra stress!

Weight is just one more thing I didn't want to overly stress about. Also, wedding dress sizes are seriously whacked. Mine is a 10 and the only alterations needed was the hem/bustle. I've never worn a 10 in my life. Bridal will drive you crazy. I would have NEVER fit into a 6, which is what I would wear if I went to Macy's and grabbed a dress.

It depends on the dress, too. Mine cannot be altered greatly due to the intricate lace, so I don't have the option of just taking it in 2-3 sizes. BUT - my weight and size has stayed exactly the same within a pound for the past two years, after losing about 25 lbs in 2011 (which made quite a difference on my petite frame). Unless something happens to me medically, I shouldn't have any problems with the dress.

If a bride wants to lose 30, 40 pounds or more and chooses a size based on that, that's a gamble I wouldn't take if you paid me.

I took the gamble. I ordered my Maggie Sottero in late January. It came in early February. I had 25 lbs to lose, and I now have 10 to go. I'm kicking @$$ at the gym. I'm now wearing the size that my dress is only they make them small, so I have a size to go. Also mine is a ball gown style, and I carry the bulk of my weight in the hips, and I don't even have to worry about that part.

Exactly what Mrs. S said! I ordered the size I was when I tried on the dress - I've since lost 25 pounds and it's all come out of my waist/tummy/butt - but not my boobs! If I had ordered a size smaller I would be screwed!

The sample i tried on was a 6 and it was snug so they were debating on ordering me an 8 or 10 because i have big hips. i told them to order the 10 even though i plan on losing a few only bec i would rather them take it in then be too tight

I did.. I bought a too tight dress from Macy's off the rack - I couldn't even zip it up in November but I knew it would be perfect for my vow renewal, and that I would lose the weight (I have dropped 40 pounds since Oct. 1st). It fits like a dream now, and zips up and looks great, and still will fit if I lose 10 more, but that is due to the style of the dress, too. But, I did not buy a "gown", and I am not "typical", either... If the weight hadn't come off, I would have just found something else.

I took the gamble. The sample at the store was a size 12 and it was about a size too small. But at the time I went dress shopping, I had lost about 10-15 pounds already, so i went ahead and ordered a 12. Since buying the dress, I have lost another 15-20 pounds (total loss to date is 33 pounds). The dress fits. I had my first fitting last week, and I don't need it taken out or in. I would still like to drop 5 pounds or so before the wedding, but as long as I don't gain I have a dress that fits.

I thought about taking the gamble when I ordered my dress last month. I have lost 30 lbs in the last few months and hope to lose another 10-15 by the middle of April, but I decided against it when I actually tried on the dress in the next size down and it was no where near zipable. Decided to just order the current size (which is already too big) and pay for the alterations.

I ordered an 8 when they suggested a 10. I bought the dress in October for my June wedding. It wasn't about vanity an ordering a smaller size though. I have been losing weight for the past 2 years and since the 8 did up but was super tight, I thought I'd take a chance with the 8. I did have a panic attack a couple of months ago because I wasn't losing and the dress was still really tight. Since then, I've lost about 5lbs and my measurements tell me that the dress should be looser now. I have more than an inch of room at my waist so I should be able to breathe now! My alterations appointment is at the end of the month.

I didn't order a size smaller and now I'm regretting it.

They have to take in my dress, a ton!

When I ordered my dress, I was in between two sizes so I ordered the smaller size. But, only because my consultant told me I was an exact fit everywhere else except my waist and if needed, she could let out the sides. Once I drop 10 more lbs. it should fit perfectly and if not, she'll let it out in the waist.
