There has been plenty of posts in the past (and there will be tons in the future) regarding airbrush vs. traditional makeup. I’m making this discussion to distinguish the two for you and hopefully save some women time from having to research the two. (There aren’t a lot of informative websites out there. I’ve done the legwork)

If you’ve had your makeup trial OR your one of the already married gals, feel free to post pictures and let us know what you decided to go with and why. It’ll be fun to see plus it will provide some great makeup inspiration.

I've had both methods done twice, once by an airbrush artist and once by a traditional. I've also photographed a handful of models, and I can generally tell when the MUA uses airbrush or traditional.

I highly, highly prefer airbrush. It feels light, like you're not wearing anything. It also photographs REALLY WELL. I also like that, during the application, it doesn't get "rubbed in" the way traditional makeup is.

The traditional makeup wasn't too bad. However I've seen traditional go from being to cake-y or too shiny. Also, if not applied correctly, it shows wrinkles and blemishes.

Hi Ladies, thanks for your replies and advice.

The MUA at the expo offered free demos, so not sure if airbrushing will always get on the eyelashes (maybe she was rushing). The airbrushing did get on my natural lashes (to which my FH pointed out it made my natural lashes blonde, like our beloved dog, Taz!) :-P

When the false eyelash strips were applied, it covered up my natural ones, so it wasn't noticeable.

@Kris - I'll check with my actual MUA (I have a trial run later next month!).

@Crisanda - my friend tried eyelash extensions and didn't like them. she said she plucked them off. poor thing! I still want to get them and getting a trial might be a good idea.

@Kimi - never heard of semi-perm, I'll read up on it Smiley smile I am eyelash obsessed because I've never had noticeable lashes. The wedding is a great excuse for me to try them out, since I normally don't wear a lot of makeup, etc.

Yes, lash extension and airbursh can co exist. the lashes should be covered to limit the exposure to the air born makeup and a light coat of water solvable mascara can be used. you can even use a strip of lashes over top of the extensions for an extra wow factor.

I prefer to use airbrush over the traditional method....just holds up better.

This is one of my lash extension client and her man for a romance shoot...anyway I used airbrush makeup on her and even added the strip lashes.

This is so helpful! I am trying to decide on hair and make-up but this is quickly becoming one hard decision since I don't really know where to start. I didn't even think of airbrush vs traditional!!! Thank you!!!!

@Michelle F. - There is no need for foundation under airbrush. Perhaps it was a primer? But adding traditional foundation under airbrush foundation is redundant. It's like two layers of foundation and would end up being cakey an defeat the purpuse of a flawless airbrush finish.

@Michelle, when I had my trial my MUA used a primer. No foundation needed like Stephanie stated above.

I am thinking about getting the airbrush makeup done. I am so glad I found this forum it has been very helpful. I have a few questions though, when doing airbrush do the MUA add blush and bronzer on top of it? I also I have oily skin and so my face gets shiny very fast, will that affect the look?

I am a hair and makeup artist and I came across this posting. Airbrush by far is the way to go on your wedding day. I do both, and I have alot of brides that do traditional which is great (I use MAC products) however, the fact that it doesn't rub onto others clothes or wipe off should make your decision easy to make for your big day. You are giving hundreds of hugs and kisses and last thing you need to worry about is leaving you imprint on Uncle Bobs shirt, lol!!!!

1- AB is not the mother off all makeup apps. It should only be used on certain skin types such as a normal to normal to oily. DRY SKIN looks BAD airbrushed. Must be prepped properly. I find it funny how some makeup artists think they are superior to other MUA who dont have one.

2-anyone can own an ABM! just did a wedding where a "MUA" owned a cake airbrush machine and was using as a makeup ABM. Hmmm-OK.

3-traditional makeup can be long wearing as well if set properly and the correct formula is used.

4-airbrush IS NOT waterproof- its makeup- it comes off-

5-have seen BAD airbrushed makeup before as well as traditional

6-so after the foundation is on, then what? HOPEFULLY the MUA can make all the other makeup look good.

7-brushes apply everything much more precise

8-airbrush is an easy go to/ speed up the makeup process and not have to worry about finding the proper products for each clients skin type

SO BRIDES- FYI-I have an ABM and use when I feel it is needed-

I've been doing makeup for 30 years - I started wheb I was 15. I am a certified Temptu makeup artist. First of all it depends on what formula of airbrush you are using.

Water based is totally matte comes off with water, is not waterproof and if you cry or sweat will streak. Imagine a dusty table you ran your finger across. You would clearly see a line from the surface underneath, even if the colors are the same. Once that line is there nothing you do can blend it back. The table must be wiped entirely clean. Same thing with water based airbrush makeup. Touch ups are impossible.

Silicone based Airbrush Makeup is water resistant offering a dewier finish than water based which is totally matte. You can dance & not worry about sweating ruining your makeup. You won't get tear streaks if you get emotional. It is, in my opinion the best of the airbrush options & can give the right client a beautiful look. The jury is still out as to whether or not silicone based airbrush foundations

Are healthy for you or not - google that subject. But given the choice I use silicone based on the finished product.

Honestly U prefer traditional and the following pictures, as well as my main photo were achieved using traditional makeup. Airbrush makeup is really best on people who have pretty good skin to begin with. I am comfortable using all of the foundation mediums but after 30 years find traditional to be the most versatile, easiest to control and comes in the widest range of formulas. AB has its place, it is just not for everyone. Also many people confuse AB makeup with AB in Photoshop and think they achieve the same results - obviously Photoshop can do the impossible but it is my belief this is why AB has become so popular - confusion over exactly what AB is and does.

Also just for the record when applied properly traditional makeup will stay on all night also. I have never had a bride tell me her makeup wore off - ever.

I think the most important thing is to hire a great makeup artist not to hire someone based on whether or not they airbrush. Kevyn Aucoin was an amazing makeup artist and he never used an airbrush machine to do makeup - he worked on some of the worlds top models, actresses and did makeup for every reward show you can think of as well as several magazine covers - he was a truly talented artist - wouldn't it be silly not to hire him because he did not do airbrushing? For those not familiar goodle him.

He passed away in 2007 and the world lost a true talent - his book the art of makeup inspired me tremendously.

Airbrush makeup is drying when being applied. I say airbrush is hands down best for brides!

Airbrush makeup is very good. I have been using it for quite some time now. My brides look gorgeous. I totally love airbrush makeup.
