African American Brides: Wigs? A Go or No?

Chelle, on November 5, 2011 at 12:27 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 68

Im trying to figure out what to do with my hair. I cut my hair into like the old Rihanna and now im natural. I do not wear my hair out due to the texture and length right now. Ive had a sow-ins for the past year, due to all the money I was spending and lack or care my hair was getting Ive switched over to lace front wigs. (I know what your thinking)

So the lace front which I actually pull my edges out of, always looks ten times better than the weaves I pay 250 for! They last longer and I get TONS of compliments. This week only I have gotten about 15 compliments just from guys (who think it mine). The ladies have commented as well thinking its a sowin and cant tell its a wig even standing right next to me. They fall better, look better and dont bunch at the neck.

I know it seems ive answered my own question but I guess im still apprehensive. I wanted to know if any of you HAVE or THINKING to do a wig as well. Wants your views on a wig vs weave

Thanks in Advance Divas!

I have shoulder length hair but I plan to do sew-ins because of the style I want and the length I want the back to be. The only things with wigs is I wouldn't want to chance it moving out of place or something else happening unless it's secured to your head.

I am getting microbraids so that I can wear my hair up because it isn't long enough for me to wear up. I do have a question for you though. Why did you decide to go natural if you are going to continue to wear weaves?

<--- That's a lace front. I'll be wearing "Kacy" (Freetress equal) on my big day. I don't use glue or tape, just hairpins. Now that TexasSweetness mentioned a possible mishap, I'll be taping it to a stocking cap. :-)

I've never worn a lace front, but did try a weave and hated it. I have shoulder length hair as well (see pic on my avatar), and the weave just didn't work for me. But maybe I needed a better girl.

Anyway, my coworker wore a lace front for a few weeks and I loved it on her. It looked fantastic, the hair was really nice, and it suited her. I thought it was great.

If that's what you want to wear, then wear it. Do what's comfortable for you.

I've been wearing my hair braided off and on for about 10 years. I LOVE IT THAT WAY. I feel like it's me, it's how I feel comfortable. I love not having to fuss over it. And I WILL wear it like that for my wedding.

My mother, who has hair almost to her waist, which is thick, jet black, shiny and gorgeous, tells me to wear it out. Without the braids, I got my father's hair - thin, frizzy, and unpredictable. The only good thing is the color, which is a reddish brown. I'm wearing braids!

Go with what makes you happy.

@Texas, your absolutely right I would definately made sure it was secure, snapped and fastened lol. I didnt think about that but I wore one to my homecoming and after all the hugs I got(it was really long) it definately moved an inch.lol

@Mrs. Needam I went Natural b/c the chemicals were killing my hair, but im not the kind of girl that natural hair looks good on and at this point its to short to do anything with.

@Thanks Rachel! Your right my FH doesnt like the concept of wigs but evertime I wear them he says, babe, I cant lie thats looks so good(sexy) on you, lol so I guess thats all that matter....

    Still welcoming more feedback :-)

I have a GF who wears lace front wigs all of the time and they absolutely look good on her. She's of course obsessed with weaves and wigs. I'd say go for it to. I own two wigs but htere's one in particular I love but I wear it every now and again.

I don't know if I could do the natural look myself. My daughter says I should but I don't think so.

I have natural texture hair and wear a sew in. It looks amazing. Honestly the problem is quality of hair and the installation. If you paid 250 for a sew-in you can't expect it to look amazing. You get what you pay for. I always have women ask about my hair. The like it but are not willing to pay to price. I pay about 1500 for my sew-in. If you are wearing a lace front from a local beauty supply...pass on it. It looks horrible in pictures and very detectable. If you want the look of amazing hair you really have to pay for it. I have and AMAZING stylist here in Chicago. She's a celebrity stylist and does and amazing job, but she doesn't come a budget price. Hair extensions you should NEVER cheap on. Bad weaves result in hair loss and breakage. It's worth it to spend the moolah and look fabulous....expecially on your day.

Hey C.W, your hair looks nice but not 1500 worth of nice, high prices for something doesnt mean quality (not to say yours isnt on the regular). Just means they have the means and you have the ends. Ive seen similiar styles that were well blended and undetectable for way less. Ive have friends knowing me for years and never knew I wore a weaves. I have yet to see any hairstyle worth that price but more power to you.

I think either one can look really nice just depends on the quality of either choice. So I guess Ill start exploring options now. But trust and believe if it aint tight/right I wont be wearing it.

    Thanks Lady

That's a ridiculous amount of money. There are African girls in NYC that will do an excellent weave for $300.

BTW: if anyone is looking for some quality hair - I think lace fronts as well - try hisandher.com. They have excellent quality hair and reasonable prices.

Have you picked out your dress yet? Once you do that then you should determine how you are going to wear your hair. I know for my I am pulling my hair up because of the style of my dress. Getting weave can be very costly....

C.W. is right you have to pay top dolla if you want good hair...I live in California and when i get my weave i pay for my hair by the ounce. So at 150.00 a ounce for 8 ounce that 1200 not to mention my stylist doing my hair.

It's really up to you how you want to do your hair. I know which ever way you decide it will be beautiful.

I agree with slthompson about waiting to determine your style until you get your dress. I always rock short styles (pixies, short bobs), but being petite and with a form fitting dress, i'm going to have to add volume and curl to balance it out, so i'm letting it grow out to get a longer style.

also, have you considered where your honeymoon is at? humidity is going to affect your style too. and $1500? i'm dead lol

Good point Jasmine about the humidity.

(Yet another reason why braids are the best!)

@Rachel S. the place you are talking about hisandher.com is right here in southern cali and they are very good. they have good prices but they tend to run out sometimes.... i have been to that place a few times.

I love them SLThompson! I always order my hair from them, and I got my coworkers ordering from there too! I'm #4, so not many people want that color, I think. I have a lot of trouble finding it in stores, especially since I get 22-24". I can find the shorter length, maybe, but since my hair is long, I need longer hair.

    I love hisandher.com!!!

It would all depend on the quality of the wig. Some people's lacefronts look amazing...but other's look like doll hair. I think you should do some trial runs and have your stylist hook it up with your veil so you can see it.

You don't have to spend $1500 for a sew-in...you can get it done for far less and still get an amazing style. It all depends on the level of experience and skill that the stylist has.

I have my hair natural and currently wear crochet braids because it's easy maintenance. I'm thinking about doing micros as well for my wedding...but since it's in September, I might just get it straightened because I think I want to wear it in a bun...

If you are going to Jamaica, (my home)...I would think about getting braids...the sun is hot on the wigs and the water is too beautiful not to enjoy Smiley smile

I think you look cute with shorter hair. I can't tell that it's natural in the picture. Whatever you decide I'm sure will look good on you. It's your decision.
