A question for mother's of girls..... or just the girls....

Mrs. Lesenski, on June 8, 2011 at 3:51 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 43

Ok, I don't exactly have a mom I can turn to for answers to these questions, so..... if you don't mind.

How old were you when you started shaving your legs?

I noticed today that my daughter has got some HAIRY LEGS! She hasn't expressed any interest in shaving nor has she expressed any concern over the amount of hair she has. I don't plan on bringing it up to her, but when I noticed it today I was rather shocked to see that my SEVEN year old daughter has the legs of a 14 year old boy.

I remember I was about nine. I "snuck" a razor and it was all downhill from there.(and my ex- step mom was pissed- NOW I know why) I hate shaving and don't want to burden my daughter. NOR do I trust that she is ready for such a dangerous endeavour.

I was the same as you! I was ten, and definitely didn't need to shave, but my friends did it, so I snuck a razor and started then! My mom was not pleased haha Smiley smile

I'm not a mother, but I think that seven is too young to hand over a razor. But if she becomes self conscious about it, I would show her how to do it and let her try.

I was 12 when I started shaving. My 11 year old has not started shaving yet and hasn't expressed that she wants to start.

I think 7 is a little young, I was 13 and my mom was also mad when I started. I think unless she is being teased for it, she probably doesn't even notice. Kids don't care about that kind of stuff. I wouldn't say anything to her and let her go as long as you can until she brings it up.

My soon-to-be step-daughter is 11 and started asking to shave her legs so we allowed her to. I think I was permitted to when I started my cycle which was roughly 12 years old. I think, in my opinion, 7 is too young to understand the logistics of how to properly shave your legs without slicing your leg. No one should be looking at a 7 year old legs as being hairy anyways. I am not referring to you as a mother.

I was in 6th grade, so 11 or 12? My 10 year old thankfully hasn't asked about her hairy legs, lol.

If it begins to bother her, why don't you invest in a "sugaring kit". Much like waxing, but it isn't as messy, less expensive, and if used continiously without shaving inbetween causes hair to grow back less and less.....pulls the hair out at the root (obviously).

I think it all depends on your child. My youngest daughter, who is now 16, is a blonde, and one hairy girl. She also needed to use deodorant when she was 7(per the pediatrician's okay). She started using Nair on her legs when she was about 10, mainly because she was being teased. She used Nair for years. She then graduated to a razor when she was about 12. She also has hairy arms and started using hair remover(not shaving) on that when she was 13. Funny though she got her Friend when she was 14, but would only get it 2X a year, just within the last 6 months, did she get regular. 16 is late for that. I expected her Friend sooner because she was hairy.

On the other hand, my oldest snuck the razor when she was 13. She has dark hair, but is not hairy at all and always had regular "Friends" from the time she was 14. So, this all depends on the child's needs.

    Good luck!

I was probably 11 or 12... My neice turned started last year she was 11. I think a good rule might be if they have hair in their pits it is time to start shaving. 7 is definately too young. Remeber the hair will lighten up in the summer.

Amber, that is my plan... I don't want her shaving and she is oblivious to it. No sense borrowing trouble by mentioning it to her. She's extremely accident prone, I'd hate for her to really hurt hersefl.

She really wants to wear a bra, though, since her older cousin has to wear one. (she has a sports bra that I let her wear occasionally, but she doesn't need it).

Why didn't they tell me little girls came with all this extra stuff? (haha)

Carol B- you are scaring the beejeezus out of me.... I started receiving my "friend" at the age of 11, I am terrified that my daughter will be an early starter like I was. UGH! I swear she already has PMS.

I am sooooo not ready for puberty! I sucked at it the first time around.

About the bra thing, I was in 6th grade before I started wearing one. That is when we had to change in gym class, and I didn't even think it was a problem until I found out that they teased me about it. Then I was really self conscious and asked for a bra, but I think my mom should have thought about that one to spare me the embarassment.

    hairy legs, eh thats ok

naked boobies in gym class, not so ok haha

I think I was 13 when I started shaving. Ha, I just remembered one of my neighbors kids when she would "shave" her legs. She only shaved the fronts of her legs because "no one can see the back." I don't think she realized that people could walk behind her. lol

I was teased in 5th grade, and that was when while shopping I asked my mom for the deodorant that had a special going on - free razor in the box. She never gave me a lesson, kind weird now that I think of it. Just let me have it. Maybe she didn't know there was a razor IN the box

Personally, I remember asking to shave in 5th grade. My mom let me use her electric razor. Do people still use them anymore? I don't remember when I started using a regular razor though.

My brother has custody have my niece so I help him out a lot. My niece's mom is Puerto Rican so she is quite hairy. She will be 9 at the end of the summer and began asking if she could shave her legs and arms at 7! Apparently, she was getting teased at school. I ended up trying out the "Smooth Away" on myself and found that it worked good enough. It wasn't smooth enough where I would be happy but that she would be happy. We use that every 2 or 3 weeks on her.

To piggy-back on what Carole B. said Emileigh (my niece) also uses deoderant daily and has since she was 7. Funny side note...she and her baby brother who is 4 call is pit juice. I don't know why.

Haley, that is too funny. sound like something I would have done. I "stole" one from my step mom...now that I think about it, I was punished more for stealing than for shaving.

@ Lori- I still have a very OLD epilady that my grandmother gave me. When I moved in with her at age eleven she refused to buy me razors. I'd already been shaving for like two or three years though, so she gave me her electric razor. I still use it on days I am to lazy to lather up! But that thing has to be like 30 years old and pulls the hair.

I'd never let my daughter wax; atleast not until she's old enough to make that decision on her own, and currently she is not.

@ Amber- how horrifying.I HATED wearing a bra! My grandma made me start wearing one when I was eleven. About the same time as I started getting visitors. Until then I don't think (aside from having to shave my legs) I even really KNEW I was a girl. I was sure that I would never be allowed on the football field again just 'cuz of the damn bra!

Smooth Away isn't a wax...o lord I would never let Emileigh wax. It is that glove thingy you put on your hand and you just rub it on your skin. No wax.

I started shaving in 7th grade when I started P.E. and noticed some of the other girls shaved. I hate it with a passion now but I guess hind sight is 20/20. I started wearing a bra (training bra really, what's the point when it was a size AAA!) when I was in 6th grade because at that point, girls would ask if you were in the "good girl club" and run their fingers up and down your back to see if they could feel your bra strap. I was horrified so I made my mom buy one so I could be part of the club! LOL

Mrs. Lesenski....I started at 11 and my girls started older, so the girls don't always take after their mother. I also woke up one morning with "B" bubbies in Gr. 5, and I have to buy my girls' bubbies. lolol

Puberty is not fun. My only saving grace is that my girls are 8 years apart, so there was no overlapping PMS. Smiley smile
