About

A fun and romantic vintage jazz & swing band that will transport your event to the Golden Age of Hollywood. Mega-Star Bruce Willis claimed, "I love this band!" as he sang along with Tara one night in Manhattan. "Visualize a Celt in the Cotton Club!" (Chris B. Donohue, Nashville Producer) Featured on a BBC documentary film about her rendition of the famous song Danny Boy, Tara's vocals have been compared to Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin and Patsy Cline. As Irish Voice newspaper's Most Influential Woman 2010 and best album of the year 2013, Tara can lead her band as a lounge trio with guitar, upright bass and vocals, or add drums or sax for an ultra hip quartet or quintet. Her popular six or seven piece little big band with your choice of trumpet, clarinet, piano or banjo will keep your party swinging all night long. And those retro threads - from pearls to peek-a-boo shoes, slinky gowns, dapper suits, and fedoras - keep all eyes on stage.

This dynamic band of elite NYC jazz musicians perform jazz standards and blues from Frank Sinatra to Nat King Cole, but also swing some Elvis Presley and Patsy Cline favorites, as well as an original twist on some Irish standards that sound like they've been reborn in the swing era. "Tara re-baptizes these songs into songs that are more part of the repertory of divas in smoky nightclubs. Her distinctive voice intrigues. At times it reminds us of Doris Day or Eva Cassidy." (Freddy Celis, Rootstime, Belgium) In addition, her band can perform original jazz, blues and celtic influenced music reminiscent of Django Reinhardt and Ella Fitzgerald. Add some Ray Charles, Sam Cooke and Etta James and we have a party! Any combination of instrumentation or preference for music style can be arranged to suit your event and budget.

“Tara and her band are absolutely superb. She’s got an outstanding, beautiful and sultry voice, and her personality is so fun that the whole evening just sparkled with her at the helm. Her band are consummate professionals. She was gracious and lovely, and MAN, can she sing. You will not be disappointed with her. On the contrary, you’ll just sit back and soak up all the compliments from your guests who’ll praise you for being smart enough to hire her.”
Lisa Alpert – Director Development & Marketing, Green-Wood Historic Fund, Brooklyn

Music from Tara's three albums can be heard on radio from America to Europe. The band has performed live on WFUV 90.7, as well as at Lincoln Center, Birdland, Iridium, Smalls Jazz Club, The Astor Room, Swing 46 Jazz & Supper Club, Rockwood Music Hall, Arlene's Grocery, The Museum of the City of New York, The Jewish Museum, The Irish Arts Center, Irish Repertory Theatre, The Cupping Room, Bowery Wine Co., Battery Gardens, Garden City Hotel, Flatiron Hotel, Refinery Hotel and Mary O's, as well as private parties, weddings, corporate events, and music festivals across the country. www.taraogradymusic.com

Tara and the Band were AMAZING! We couldn't have asked for anyone better. Everyone loved Tara's voice and the music was so beautiful, happy and soothing - really set the tone to our wedding! We even danced to on of her songs for our first dance - it was magical!

They are such a great band - Vintage Jazz with a singer that is a dead ringer for Elizabeth Taylor. Our guests loved it :)

I met my now husband on one of my trips to Ireland. I cherish the memory of that trip and the many others that followed. I was delighted to discover Tara O’Grady through a friend in the Irish community. When planning our special day, we knew that she and the Black Velvet Band were a perfect fit. Tara sang songs like Danny Boy, Wild Rover, and I'll Tell Me Ma, with a vintage jazz swing that made it impossible for people to stay in their seats. Our family from Ireland was absolutely delighted to hear Tara bring new life to these Irish classics and the songs allowed me to relive the memories that I hold most dear.
Her performance was also rounded out with songs by Elvis, Patsy Cline and Ray Charles which brought everyone back to the magical era of these musical greats. My young nieces, nephews and grandparents alike danced the night away. I cannot say enough to express my gratitude to Tara and the band for sharing their wonderful talents and for helping us to make another lifelong memory.

We asked Tara to sing a special song for our first dance, one that wasn't on her set list. She performs mostly jazz and blues which we love, but we wanted a Celine Dion song. She offered to learn it for us. Half way through the song, she invited up others to dance with us, and that's when the guests realized it wasn't a CD playing. They all thought the song was a recording of Celine Dion singing until they heard Tara speak. That shows you how good she is. She blew everyone away. What a talent to be able to pull off such a voice. My family bought up all her CDs. Thank you Tara, and the rest of the band. You guys were amazing.

Tara and the Black Velvet Band were fabulous!! They were so easy to work with in advance of our big day and worked with us to put together a wonderful play list. They played the perfect music for the cocktail hour and then once it was time to dance - got everyone on their feet!! Everyone raved about the music and how much fun they had (and pictures certainly seem to back that up!!). Tara's voice is beautiful and the band has great energy and presence. Tara was a pleasure to work with, is absolutely charming and has a great personality. And they even gave us a CD of their music afterwards, which we have enjoyed, helps us relive a wonderful party. I cannot recommend Tara and the Black Velvet Band enough!

In addition to being a sophisticated sound for both dining and dancing at a wedding I was impressed by the bands ability to go up and down tempo as appropriate. They had an excellent sense of what the crowd wanted and easily accommodated specific requests. Tara has an outstanding and original voice and is accompanied by a great group of musicians. We could not have been more pleased.

I hired Tara O'Grady and the Black Velvet band after they came highly recommended by my wedding planner who had used them at numerous events before. I wanted a DJ for my reception so we chose to use them for the cocktail hour. They were a hit! First if all she sounds like Billie Holiday, looks fantastic and has great ease about her- not your average wedding singer! I wished I could have had her for the entire night! They were so much of a hit that the guests had to be asked to actually come inside for the reception to begin! After we had to unfortunately ask them to stop playing! Her tempo, music selection (I gave her a few suggestions and she went from there including upbeat jazzy styles and beautiful, slower ones) all were spot on for my wedding- and my guests still talk about her ("they call her Billie"). Favorite part of my wedding!!!

Tara sang Ave Maria for our ceremony. She had everyone in tears. The voice of an angel! We should have hired her for the whole night.
