Shumans Bakery left Alexandria several years ago, sadly, but the family continues to make their special jelly cake by special order (they have a website!). My family always has jelly cake for all family events (decades!) and where it might have been the groom's cake at weddings in the past, we had it for our wedding cake. Patrick Hagan is great to work with and delivered the special cakes on time and my family adored we used it as our cake. We placed one cake atop a beautiful cakestand and had a small flower topper for it. The "old guard" in the family helped explain it to those grabbing their pieces and while perhaps not everyone got how special it was, there was none left at the end of the night. If you haven't had jelly cake - give it a try. Even if just for a groom's cake.
