What's Unique About Your Wedding?

Rose, on September 26, 2014 at 8:48 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 48

I've seen a few posts lately about brides who are feeling self-conscious of their nontraditional wedding decisions. I just wanted to take a second to celebrate these women and their "different" choices. I think that no matter your budget, a wedding is special because it celebrates the union of two individuals and combines families, cultures, and tastes.

So, let's hear it, ladies: what makes YOUR wedding awesome and unique?

Hey! Lady Firefly, you're wedding's on my birthday, have an extra slice of cake for me Smiley winking

not too much unique here, other than some homemade touches... everywhere. I guess our Catholic wedding Mass is a little unique, I guess?

I'm thinking of having the ring bearer pillow be my Oma's old family bible (it's completely in German because she's from Germany)

I walked down the aisle to Led Zeppelin, had an excerpt from a childrens book (I Like you by Sandol Stoddard) read during our ceremony (and quoted John Lennon), The MOH and BM sang a song on the acoustic guitar for the toast and my husband and I walked into our reception to The Imperial Death March (Darth Vader theme)..

Every wedding is unique in it's own way. I think the thing that makes us so unique is our (dare I use the word?) theme - which is "welcome to Virginia". We have subtle touches like Virginia wine on the tables, to pineapples on the stationary and favors (the state symbol of hospitality) and we're serving Virginia ham and crab dip...I want our wedding to be warm. When you walk into the reception I want people to feel like they just put on their favorite pair of jammies - even though their in cocktail attire.

Our wedding is Halloween themed, I'm walking down the aisle to a cover of "come little children" from the movie Hocus Pocus, my flower girls are going to sing "love is an open door" from Frozen during the ceremony, the bridal party will walk to "this is halloween" from Nightmare Before Christmas, our first dance is going to be "I want to grow old with you" by Adam Sandler. Basically nothing is traditional except my dress.

Our ceremony is on a pier on Lake Lanier and our reception is a 4 hour yacht cruise on the lake. I wanted our wedding to be fun for our guests and just a big celebration. I can't wait!

*We are releasing balloons after the ceremony in honor of my mom (she passed away a few years ago).

*I have a friend that will be wandering around, playing his guitar and singing during the cocktail hour. He is a true entertainer. He gets people singing, clapping and having a good time. He has a really quick wit and always cracks up his audience. It will help keep the guests from getting bored while we finish up pictures.

*I made all of our decor and it is definitely unique.

*We grew our own flowers to use for the wedding.

    The list could go on...

We are having a traditional Thai water ceremony after our regular wedding ceremony so I get to wear two wedding dresses, and not because it's a separate reception dress. I also have a third wedding dress for my Vietnamese FMIL, but that will most likely not be seen in a tangible way on the wedding day due to time, but I'm hoping to have a picture of it displayed so it gets seen by our families. We also might be entering into the reception with an instrumental version of Avenged Sevenfold's "Little Piece of Heaven" (so nobody will know what the lyrics REALLY are), but that is yet to be decided on 100%.

@Gamecox you're right, every wedding is unique. I guess I just wanted to see what types of special touches people are adding to their ceremonies and receptions, because it's nice to read and puts me in the wedding spirit.

Instead of the traditional first dance, FH and I are doing a hula together (to an upbeat song that when translated alludes to some not-so-PG things). My hula teacher will choreograph it so it should look fun.

We're doing a tropical/Hawaiian theme which maybe isn't too unusual, but I think it'll have a lot of personal touches. For example, instead of a unity candle we're doing a lei exchange which is common for Hawaiian weddings, but maybe not a standard in most weddings. My hula teacher taught a chant for presenting a lei, we may learn that chant when doing this. We'll see!

JoBu, I looked at Lake Lanier too for my wedding because I loved the idea of having it on one of the yachts! It just didn't fit our budget though. I know yours will be beautiful!

What's unique about ours are the African wedding traditions we're incorporating. I think it's all gonna be so beautiful and meaningful!

My fiancé and are are huge classic car fanatics and have one that's been passed down in the family. We are having at least 3 at our wedding in the front for people to take pictures with! Also it's a nice way for his family to see the car again, most of the men owned it at one point. Oh and in our e pics, we had the car in it! It's a champagne one which fits our colors, gold or champagne, ivory and blush

@Mrs. Mayes, is it the version from the movie or the Marilyn Manson cover?

Our wedding is very traditional, so there really isn't much that is "oh wow, how interesting that you're doing that." Both sets of my grandparents are deceased, so I've asked my cousin to walk down the aisle at the time my grandparents would have been seated carrying 4 white roses (one for each of them). FH has only one grandparent who has passed, so his grandfather will carry a white rose for his late wife.

Our first dance is a song written by a family friend, so I know that no one in the history of weddings has ever danced to it as their first song Smiley smile We both are huge music lovers, so I'm trying to incorporate songs that are very us that aren't seen at weddings, too, but still suit the traditional wedding atmosphere (not much luck so far, though)

ETA: My St. Bernard will be the ring bearer - complete with the barrel and everything. He'll be so handsome Smiley smile

I'm incorporating black into my attire.

Carrying a brooch bouquet (our families have no idea what that is).

We are currently trying to figure out how to incorporate elegant Halloween aspects...we LOVE Halloween and originally wanted it to be our overall theme but can't afford it so we want to do it more subtle.
