Sparkler send off

xfiftyfour, on February 11, 2010 at 11:14 AM Posted in Planning 0 34

Hey all,

Is anyone else doing this, or has someone done this already? I want to, and then I was thinking of also personalizing matchbooks to go with (to be kind of a 2fer.. favors and send off in one shot). I do have a couple questions though, to vendors or to those that have been to an event with this type of send off, or maybe even to those that have just done a lot of reading already:

1. How should we handle the lighting? Originally I'd thought the matches would be a great solution.. and I've seen lots of pictures of people that packaged the sparklers and matches together to imply that that's how they did it too. But then I've read warnings against this saying that matches don't work too well and it has hands way too close to the sparkler when it lights.

2. If we buy the #20 (should burn for about a minute and a half), how many should we allot for each guest? Just 1? 2? More?

Any other tips from experience would be great, too.

Thanks!

I'm doing this, so any answers you get I would love to hear haha. I was planning on leaving on or two for each person on every table. And I'm planning on putting them all together in one place because I'm having small kids at my wedding and I don't want to let them get ahold of them without their parents' permission.

I am considering doing this to.. I would buy the ones that burn for 3 minutes.. but it depends on the number of guests that you will have.. I have never attempted to light fire works with matches but I do agree that it probably would cause some trouble.. I would consider investing in a few of the long neck lighters and have designated lightees (or put one at each table, or have all of your bridal party have one) that way it is less likely someone will get burnt and you know they are in good hands. Personally I would not do matches as a favor especially if you decide to get lighters for the sparklers... usually with match books in general only one or 2 matches get used and the rest will get ruined or trashed but thats just my opinion

I wanted to. But we had a horse drawn carriage and the company wouldn't allow sparklers, didn't want to spook the horses.

I'd buy the three minute ones, as well. That way everyone has theirs lit and none of them go out by the time my FH and I walk out.

I thought about doing this.... but at the same time I'm deathly afraid of ending up on AFV with my dress ablaze because of some brat kid lol...... so we'll see. Have you gone to South of the Border's website... they probably have a bunch of suggestions on there and decent prices on their sparklers/fireworks

I have no interest in the 3 minute jobs.. they're 3 feet long and I'd imagine they're very awkward to hold and use. 1 and a half minute (2 minutes according to some sites) is plenty long for me. Smiley smile

I did read that lighting a sparkler with a sparkler is the fastest way to get it done.. so maybe I'll nix the matchbook idea and buy a couple of the long lighters and some #10 sparklers and send the MOH and BM down the line? Hopefully someone that has some first hand experience will pop in soon! Smiley smile

You can get shorter 3 min ones... they are just thicker and burn slower.

    LIGHTING SPARKLERS

One of the first things people notice about sparklers (especially gold sparklers) is that they are rather hard to light. Trying to light them with matches or in windy conditions is often next to impossible and can be very frustrating. The exception is a special type of sparkler equipped with a striking composition at the tip. Similar to a "strike on the box" kitchen match, the sparkler is lit by scratching the tip on a special strip conveniently provided on the side of the sparkler carton. For all other sparklers the following lighting suggestions should make the job easier. Children must always be closely supervised when using anything involving combustible material.

    1. Pick a location out of the wind to do the lighting

    2. Never attempt to light more that one sparkler at a time. Even one sparkler when it first lights can be rather surprising in that it does not come on slowly but instead

Instead bursts to life in a halo of sparks. Trying to light a bundle of sparklers all at one time can be unsafe.

    3. Do not use paper or stick matches to light sparklers. Sparklers often require a fairly long period of time to light once the ignition source is applied to the tip of the sparkler. Matches generally do not burn long enough to raise the composition of the sparkler to its ignition point. Additionally, the hand of someone attempting to use matches will be uncomfortably close to the sparkler when it does light. The exception to this is sparklers that have been specially treated at the tip with a black powder priming that is much easier to light and affords time to remove your hand before the sparkler develops its full sparking display; check with your dealer for availability. Also colored sparklers generally are somewhat easier to light, however, even under these conditions, stick matches are recommended over paper matches.

    4. Butane lighters, barbecue lighters and propane torches can be used. Especially safe are lighters in which the flame is away from the hand holding the lighter. Gas or charcoal barbecues can also be used. The "instant on," push-button type propane torches (these are equipped with piezoelectric igniters), if available, are the quickest and best lighting method

    5. By far the easiest method when lighting multiple sparklers at one time is to ignite just one sparkler using a butane or propane lighter and then using that sparkler to light other sparklers in turn. Having one person be the "designated lighter" and lining up everyone else in a row, each with sparkler in hand makes it very simple to light and quickly move down the line. Sparklers lit with another sparkler will light almost instantly and hands are situated well back from the burning ends.

    6. Hold the sparkler horizontally or with the tip slightly lowered when lighting.

    7. Always light a sparkler at the tip furthest away from the bare wire handle

I was thinking about doing this BUT my photographer told me that every wedding he's done that had the sparkler send off had some sort of mix up. He told me the combination of alcohol and fire never work. I thought he was bluffing until the videographer (who doesn't know the photographer) said the same thing. I'm gonna pass on that one. Good luck tho

I ordered my wedding spraklers from this site, we had 220 people and ordered 200 and still have some left over. we used them as a send off. if you do that, remember that not everyone stays at the wedding untill you leave. older guests will leave before you.

    we LOVED these sparklers

Maybe a good way to light them would be to have a dozen or so votive candles on a table, then light the votives and when you are ready for your send off, have the guests file by the table with the votive candles to light their sparklers.

A lot of brides do this at our facility. We require that they bring lighters (it takes two hands to light matches, and in one hand you're holding the lighter), and BE SURE TO HAVE A HUGE BUCKET OF WATER on either side of the lines for them to put them out afterwards!
