Hey all,

Is anyone else doing this, or has someone done this already? I want to, and then I was thinking of also personalizing matchbooks to go with (to be kind of a 2fer.. favors and send off in one shot). I do have a couple questions though, to vendors or to those that have been to an event with this type of send off, or maybe even to those that have just done a lot of reading already:

1. How should we handle the lighting? Originally I'd thought the matches would be a great solution.. and I've seen lots of pictures of people that packaged the sparklers and matches together to imply that that's how they did it too. But then I've read warnings against this saying that matches don't work too well and it has hands way too close to the sparkler when it lights.

2. If we buy the #20 (should burn for about a minute and a half), how many should we allot for each guest? Just 1? 2? More?

Any other tips from experience would be great, too.

Thanks!

I love the sparkler idea and the pics you can do with them! My venue offers fireworks, but they want $25oo and that is not in my budget.

I have seen several weddings where sparklers worked well. I have never seen any real problems. I want to say that you must never wear a veil or a dress with tulle near fireworks or candles. Tulle is almost as flammable as gasoline, the little holes allow the air to feed the fire and because it is a plastic you can't easily put the fire out with water. Be very careful around the unity candle and other flames.

Great questions!! I would not recommend using matches at all, they are not strong enough to light the sparkler. I always tell our customers to have a couple of BBQ lighters ready to light the sparklers. Once the first sparkler is lit, have others dip their unlit sparklers into the lit sparkler and then the lighting goes very quickly.

If you are purchasing the #20 Sparklers, you will only need to allow 1 sparkler per person. They burn for 2 min and that is plenty of time for the bride and groom to make their grand exit.

Most photographers have great tips for photo ops, talk with them in advance so that they can stage great pictures!!

    Good Luck!

I've had bridal clients do sparklers a few different ways, but the one that always seems to work best is have an candle lit (with glass sides) on the outside of the venue. Maid of honor and best man light their sparklers and then go down the sides (one on each side) and lets everyone else light theirs from their already burning sparkler. It goes really quick and is easy with little mess. At the end of the rows there is a nice vase/bucket, etc. with water that each guest can dispose of their sparkler upon leaving. No mess!

As for fireworks, I've had clients that do this as well. Always beautiful. You'll want to make sure you have someone coordinating timing wit the fireworks company and you may want to consider doing it right after the cake cutting (if visable) or right after a father's speech before inviting everyone in for dinner so that you don't lose guests without seeing it. It's a large expense to miss out on. Hope that helps!

Thanks for posting this. I have been going back and forth with this idea because I wasn't sure how to work it without them all going out so quickly or people burning themselves. haha

FROM WHAT I'VE READ THE BEST WAY TO LIGHT SPARKLERS IS TO LIGHT MULTIPLE SPARKLERS A FEW FEET APART FROM EACH OTHER... WHEN SOMEONE GIVES THE OK GUESTS CAN LIGHT THEIR SPARKLERS FROM THEM. 20" OR 2 MINUTE SPARKLERS ARE BEST LENGTH BECAUSE THEY GIVE ENOUGH TIME FOR EXIT AND PICTURES YET THEY AREN'T AWKWARDLY LONG (LONG ONES ARE A BAD IDEA FOR INEBRIATED OR YOUNG GUESTS) THE ONES YOU USE TO LIGHT FROM CAN BE THE LONG ONES SINCE THEY ARE LYING ON THE GROUND SO THEY STAY LIT FOR LONGER, UP TO 4 MINUTES. ALSO THE LONG ONES ARE MORE EXPENSIVE SO USING THE 20" FOR GUESTS ARE MORE ECONOMICAL. I AM DOING THIS AT MY WEDDING IN APRIL AND I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE HOW IT TURNS OUT!

I am doing the sparklers and we are having each groomsman and bridesmaid have a long lighter. So they will all take places one each side spaced evenly to help light them faster. Im doing the 20 in bc we are only having 100 ppl and it wont take long to walk through at all. Not to mention a safer distance they would be from us! Our kid tables will have glow stick wands to use in place of sparklers. We used match boxes for favors tied to the sparkler but put a lil safety note to not use them together! I did 1 sparkler per person b cto be fai rnot everyone wil stay the whole night and you will hav eextras.

Hi there! Here's the answers to your questions:

1.) Most of our customers prefer using a candle because a lot of people can light their sparklers at once, but you can also use another sparkler to light them quickly as well.

2.) If you choose to go with 20" wedding sparklers then you should definitely get at least 2 per guest. However, I would direct you to use 36" wedding sparklers instead because they burn for closer to 4 minutes.

There are also a lot of other sizes available as well as shaped sparklers. Just make sure you have a bucket of water to extinguish the sparklers in and take all necessary safety precautions to have a great experience. Best wishes!
