Bustle help, please??

Katie, on September 12, 2012 at 11:19 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

I have an appointment with the seamstress today and I need to decide on my bustle. She tried two the last time we were there and I didnt like either of them. She tried an "Under Bustle" but it made me look like i had a huge bubble on my butt. Then she tried a 5 point "Over Bustle" and that made it look like i had wings on the side of my dress.

Any suggestions on what would look good with my dress? It is made of Silky Taffeta.

What type of bustle are you having for your dress??

Oh man, I would post a pic of mine, but I have a minor heart attack every time I see it.

What about an under bustle but lower? So that the bubble is not on your butt but basically on the hem?

Here is one that I liked for my original dress. I don't really care for the way bustling looks, but it is a necessary evil. (ETA: That is not me in the picture. Found it on Google.)

I was just looking up bustle options yesterday and found this website. Take a look at the side sling bustle on the page. That dress is a little similar to what you have.

I'm thinking of the ballroom bustle on the same page. My dress has similar pleats as the one on the website.

Tiffany, I really like that one!! I also like the train flip on the same page. Two great ideas to take with me tonight! thank you!!

Mrs. S. I also thought about asking her to do the under bustle a little lower.

Lets hope I can decide tonight. Not much time left Smiley smile

Whatever you decide, ask her if she would do a color coded bustle. It's going to make the life of whoever is going to bustle your dress much easier.

Absolutley color coordinate it. Cate had a difficult time deciding as well.

Ultimately she wound up with a 5 point underbustle.

For her First Dance with her DH, Cate kept her train down. However, she found it difficult to dance, so she used the wrist thingie to hold it.

For her father daughter dance, DH tried to recreate the bustle, but it wouldn't come out right. She also had her dress bustled for the cake cutting. Once she started dancing, she used the wrist thingie.

    More looks ...

As you can see, she had far more fun not bustling the dress because it kept falling down.

    Some bustles....

    1. 5 point french bustle.

    2. 7 point over bustle

    3. Austrian bustle

If I were you, I would go with the easiest bustle and then have the back up wrist thingie to hold your dress.

I'd take the wings over having my butt looking bigger. Especially since I have the "pear" shaped body and I'd hate it if my hips looked any bigger. I think a simple pull up bustle like the last photo that Carole posted would look really nice with your gown. Mine won't have much a bustle. I'd like to have the option of the bustle just in case I don't feel like leaving it on the ground. That's just me though. I wish I had pics of me in my gown for "fittings" and to give an idea of what mine would look like.

A ballroom bustle would look great on your dress, however, it will take a lot of points to do.

Can you do a google image search of bustle ideas for your dress style??

I like the 5 point bustle IMO, I think that may work on your gown?

I personally hate the bustle on my gown but I have no options but the one the seamstress did and I didn't want the wrist band.

I LOVED my bustle. It was incredible, but I think it would be really expensive and wouldn't quite work for your dress. options are out there! I love the ballroom bustle, too.

    Dear Christine,

Would you please get into your time machine and get that bustle for my dress, instead of the mess I wore on my tiny behind? I would tremendously appreciate it! And I'm in the mood to write letters today.

    Love,

    S.

A ballroom bustle is done by attaching small plastic rings along the inside hem of the dress. These are attached to the dress with a small folded ribbon. Each one is numbered on the ribbon (the purpose of the ribbon is for numbering only). The rings then are tied to longer ribbons that are sewn on the inside of the dress - either to the lining or preferably the crinoline. These ribbons are a folded piece of ribbon long enough to tie (grosgrain ribbon is preferred for its strength - It is not slippery and will stay tied better) The ends of the ribbon are cut to points so they are easily threaded through the ring. The ribbons are also numbered so that they are easy to match to their corresponding ring.

To determine where the ribbons and rings are placed you need to pin the train up under the dress to make the dress the same length the whole way around.

I am in love with Austrian bustles. But they remind me of the old-style Victorian gowns and I'm a sucker for historical fashion.
