Your dress - was it what you thought you’d pick or something different?

Rachel, on July 13, 2021 at 1:57 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 36
Hi, Everyone!

Just wanted to post a fun topic today for those that have found their dress. How many of you went into your appointment thinking you’d pick one specific silhouette (ballgown, a-line, mermaid, etc.) and you ended up loving something entirely different? Why did you love your dress more than what you THOUGHT you wanted? Just want to hear who had this happen as I thought for sure I would pick an a-line or ballgown style dress and went with a fit-to-flare/mermaid!

I thought i wanted a mermaid style with cap sleeves.

i actually tried that style on FIRST. and i didn't like how it looked on me.

i ended up with an A-line dress with spaghetti straps? not really sure what my straps are called haha. but it was much more flattering on me

I wanted a mermaid with minimal details, just clean and simple. That's basically exactly what I got since the consultant only brought me those kinds of gowns. I showed her some pictures of what I was looking for and ultimately got a very similar gown to those

I was torn between a trumpet style and a ball gown so I got both, my ceremony is the ball gown and my reception dress is the trumpet

I definitely knew I wanted A-line because I knew that I liked the way they looked on my body type. I did not know that I would want the illusion top to give my waist a more defined look or that I would end up loving more lace and beading (initially showed a satin dress at the top with flowy layers in the skirt)

I went in wanting to try on a specific dress, a luxurious ballgown with tiny ruffles all down the skirt. My 2 best friends told me to try on other styles first so I could go into them openly. I ALMOST changed my mind because of a strapless, body-tight to the shins with a little flair dress that my MOH picked out off the rack. But in the end, I ended up loving the ballgown skirt, but found a different top I loved. So I ordered a custom made dress that fuses the style of the top of one dress and the skirt of the ballgown. It just came in the other day and I LOVE IT.

Just for fun, here is the dress that ALMOST made me change my mind:

I thought I would go for a strapless, corset top, mermaid dress with lace. I ended up with a crepe dress with straps. The minimalistic look ended up catching my eyes the most. I stuck to the mermaid silhouette though.

It was not at all what I thought I would want! The only aspect of it that remained true to what I initially thought I wanted was lace. I pictured high-neck to cover a tattoo, long bell sleeves, and an A-line or column. Then, when I was trying on dresses, I fell in love with two styles: high-neck, halter and/or sleeveless & crepe mermaid/trumpet styles. I ended up landing on a lace mermaid style with a deep V, no sleeves, and an illusion neckline.

I would say that I was about 99.99% certain I knew what silhouette would suit me best, but was absolutely open to trying others, and willing to be wrong. I guess the other thing is, I strongly felt that with most silhouettes, you could wear them in other colours for all sorts of future events (other people's weddings, formal parties, balls, charity functions, whatever) whereas it's unlikely I'd ever be invited to an event formal enough to require an actual ballgown! So, this felt like the one time when it was appropriate and I intended to take my chance and go all out!

I went shopping with 2 ideas in my head.

I either wanted a very plain, very structured and timeless mikado silk dress in a super dramatic silhouette, with literally no beading or embellishments of any kind ORRR go completely other end of the spectrum and get a soft, romantic dreamy tulle or organza dress covered in 3D flowers, maybe in a blush or moscato colour. I was well aware that I am VERY picky about the kind of embellishments and 3D flowers I actually like, and so the probability of finding one to fall in love with was low. Not surprisingly, we didn't find one.

I expected to walk out with a structured dress, and I 100% did, but I think the most important thing is being open to everything, not judging a dress on the hanger, and just generally enjoying the experience!

I intended to get a strapless dress but didn’t like how I looked like I was slouching the whole time.

I end up going with a high neck!

Same experience. Not completely what I imagined, but same silhouette (a-line).

I didn't really know what I wanted going in, although if I'd had to choose I would've probably guessed A-line... however I definitely never would've thought I'd end up with a strapless, mermaid, all-lace gown! I thought I hated the mermaid look - and I still don't like dresses with lots of structure and poof at the bottom - but I ended up loving the subtle transition of my dress Smiley smile

I really thought I was going to get a strapless A Line or a Ballgown because I always feel the need to hide my body BUT they all made me feel like I was heading to prom. The consultant brought out a Mermaid dress with long sleeves and I fell in love immediately 🤩

I expected to want an A-line, but I didn't think I'd be open to a sparkly dress. I started out wanting something super simple and ended up with a dress that is super shimmery. I didn't realize until after I bought it that I had actually pinned that dress to my Pinterest board the day before I went dress shopping.

    Totally different.

I figured I would do a mermaid style. I did find one of that silhouette that I adored, but it was $4000, so that was a no-go.

Not only did I not expect to pick the silhouette I did (A-line), but I had seen the catalog photo of the dress I picked online - and I hated it. I only found out after I'd bought it and asked what the style number/name was, and I looked it up and was like, wait, it was that dress?!?! I think it was because the catalog dress was in champagne, and maybe the model's body shape, because it looked nothing like the photo on me (or in my wedding photos).

I was 99.99% sure I wanted the Mori Lee "Marissa" - strapless ball gown, sweetheart neckline, horsehair skirt. This was me in it:

I ended up not liking it because of the way the front was draped, I thought it made me look wide. This is the dress I ended up picking:

And I added a thicker horsehair, so here's how it turned out!

I tried on a bunch of dresses but I feel like I always knew what I wanted. This dress feels like it's exactly "me" and I couldn't be happier with it.

I thought I'd buy a plan mermaid style gown. I'm not one for the big poofy princess dress. Plus with my tattoos I wanted plan so the tattoos and dress don't clash. I ended up leaving with a proofy dress that has so much details. I tried on the plan mermaid style dresses but never could see myself as a bride in it. To me it was just another dress no matter how many I tried on. So I tried on the big poofy ballgown and instantly fell in love.

I went in 100% against lace, strapless, and anything fitted. I really had my heart set on simple & minimal, which is what I ended up leaving with x2! I found them at the third store I went to and my consultant stuck to what I was telling her, but also encouraged me to be a little more open minded. I was actually torn between 2 for my reception gown. They both were the same silhouette, but one was blush with lace and the other was ivory silk. I ended up choosing the ivory silk, and my ceremony dress is a fuller dress that's also silk. Both are also strapless which I thought I'd never want since I love to dance, but I walked around the entire store, danced and jumped without tugging at the top and felt very secure!

I'm going to ask my seamstress at my first alterations appt if she could add off the shoulder sleeves to the ceremony dress. While it's beautiful strapless, I just really love the look of off the shoulder straps, and really hope she can add them!

I went in to try on a fit to flare and was deadset that is what would work with my body. This is me in it.

It was a beautiful dress however I felt like a stuffed sausage in it. My soon to be sister in law picked this dress out and I knew it was the one before I even saw it in the mirror. Complete opposite of what I was planning on!
