wth is "western formal"--please help a fogab out!

Nonna T, on September 8, 2017 at 9:43 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 44

My stepson, who is getting married next August stopped over last night and changed my self proclaimed title of "smog" (step monster of the groom) to "fogab" (friend of the groom and bride) which is sweet.

He also said that the bride has posted on their website the dress code as "western formal." What is that? Sounds like an oxymoron to me!

I have boots, but they are for riding a Harley, not a horse.

Joe is at a loss as well. I told him we should await further instructions and deal with it closer to the date.

He asked me to ask y'all for suggestions.

Thanks, as always!

All I can think of are those weird little string ties for guys. Sorry, I'd be at a loss as well!

I think of sun dresses and boots, but that is not very formal, is it? I'm also not sure about this one. Keep us updated with what you find out!

Uh... What? A quick google search left me with not much other than for men's attire...

This site kind of makes me think it's supposed to be jeans, jackets, and cowboy hats?

@Kitty, ok make sense for the guys, thanks!

What do I wear? I don't think it matters too much as I am not really a key player in all this. My job is to be supportive, gracious and above all, avoid J's ex who I have been warned about for many years (including by her own children).

I'm actually very curious as to what "Western Formal" means. A quick Google search just showed me men in tuxedos with large belt buckles, bolo ties, and cowboy boots...is this right? I didn't realize that style had a name..

    And for the ladies...

ETA: I wouldn't wear any of these things. I would just get a nice dress, maybe not too dressy.

I'm in Texas and have heard jeans, western boots, hat and tux shirt/jacket referred to as a Texas Tuxedo. When my husband has worn this I've worn a dress with western boots, turquoise/silver jewelry, hat and a fur jacket.

Oh, Rae, trust me I have been Googling and thanks for the note of support Smiley smile

Alyssa, I have another name for it. But it's not my wedding so I am keeping my trap shut!

    Thanks mucho, all!

For men: nice jeans, nice tucked in button down, and a nice pair of either cowboy boots or steal toed work boots, cowboy hat

For Ladies: Nice jeans, tucked in button down, cowgirl boots, longer sundresses could also work. Hope this helps. This is what they classify as western formal around here.

@KittyPrawn - that site has everything - suits with cowboy hats, khakis, jeans, vests.... they don't seem to know either Smiley smile

Maybe it just means wear your nice stuff as opposed to the everyday jeans and boots? Seems like you can wear almost anything, top it with a hat and you'll be good.

@CD - Yeah, put on a fresh pair of Levis, not the ones with a hole and caked on mud!

I am imagining all the men in Bolo Ties and all the Woman dressed up as saloon girls

Ala Westworld or the old time photo places on the boardwalk down the shore.
