Why having a dry/self cater wedding because of money is bull

So I was talking to FMIL this morning. She was telling me that when she and FH's dad were getting married (they're divorced) she couldn't afford much. But she had a wedding "in her means". She got a $50 dress from Macy's. Got married in the park, paid for the marriage license, was married by a judge...

Macy's. Got married in the park, paid for the marriage license, was married by a judge and had CATERED food and LIQUOR in the pavilion at the park.

If she can do it, with two kids and pregnant with my FH, little to no money, you can do it too. WITHOUT self catering, having no liquor, or asking people to fund your wedding.

ETA: changed the title because religion is the only exception to dry wedding, or having your wedding before dinner time.

    Adria,

My aunt had a self-catered (not really - grandparents spent the whole day cooking) wedding. She also asked me to be her photographer. I said yes because otherwise she would not have hired someone. It was a ton of pressure on me and the rest of the family. No one told her to her face that they weren't able to enjoy her wedding, but the truth is, they didn't.

So, it comes off as selfish to your guests. We all would have much rather gone out to dinner at a restaurant after the ceremony.

Matt, I didn't think I could love you more, but I do.

Egg salad, lemonade, family serving, Spotify and cousin Fred taking photos 'cause he's got a great camera, so that makes him a great photographer. No one cares because they are just so overjoyed that you're getting married.

That's everyone's idea of a fabulous wedding. NOT.

    But dream on.

You can have an absolutely wonderful wedding, with little or no stress, for 2000.00 or less. You get a great officiant (newsflash; even the freaking courthouse is going to charge you, but hey, that's so romantic), you invite your 10 closest friends to lunch, get an hour of a photographer a bouquet and maybe rent a vespa to run away on.

You're just as married as if your family made shitty, dangerous food and 150 were muttering how shitty the food was and why can't we even have a drink?

    Oh, you can. There's lemonade!

Just stop it. If you're adult enough to get married, you're adult enough to host a decent party. Cue the violins.

@Alyssa samesies I hate getting all dressed up and giving a generous gift just to be lavished with delicious food and free booze.

What works for some may not work for others. But salmonella works for no one.

I'm waiting for those TIERED wedding posters. I mean why self-cater to everyone? That's too much work. Just self-cater to yourselves and asks your guests to bring their own food or watch you eat because they are soooooo privileged to be there.

@SoontobeMrsSandell "Sorry but my wedding isn't about making my guests happy. Its about the unity of my FH and myself."

The ceremony is about the unity of you and your FH. The reception is to thank your guests for sharing that moment with you, therefore it most certainly is about making your guests happy. If you don't want to make them happy, why are you inviting them?

Do you really think it's an honor and a privilege for them to travel to watch you have a pretty princess day, give you a gift that's most likely cash, while eating some room temperature food and drinking a nice glass of Pepsi?

Hey, any of the regs around from the BYOC thread from last year. I know Celia and CP, but anyone else. Since this thread is going to Hell in a very large handbasket, why not ask your guests to bring chairs too?

My guests will be plenty happy, thanks for your concern! Lmfao. Oh and BTW I'm not asking for gifts from ANY guests. We will actually be giving gifts. Alcohol doesn't always have to be the "thank you". And with 3 chefs in the family I'm not worried about food.

Ahhh yes. Because anyone going to a wedding only brings a gift if they are asked to....
