Why do wedding gowns have to run so small??

Deb, on October 23, 2013 at 9:48 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 51

I just bought my gown, but the size is 3 sizes larger than what I normally wear in clothes (6). It freaked me out a bit, especially when the saleswoman kept telling me "gowns run small." I thought Ok, up a size... but THREE sizes to a 12? I find this rather dumb of gown manufacturers..... Most of us want to feel good about our size... and those larger numbers put a bit of a negative spin on "dress trying on"... Does anyone else feel this ?

I know!! Also, why do stores have such crappy lighting in their changing rooms? If I was a designer I would make all clothes run 2 sizes big and have Oprah lighting in all my stores.

I get it. I was an 8 when I tried on dresses and my wedding dress size was a 14.

I was just thinking about this today ... in real life I wear a dress size 6 (pants size 8) and my wedding dress is a 12. it makes zero sense to me. thankfully i get it and i'm not insecure about it, but it just seems so stupid

I think it is because of British sizing, and not all designers use it, so to me the inconsistency is even more annoying.

I'm an everyday size 8, and my wedding gown was ordered in a 10. It's still going to be large, but it needs to be in order for the seamstress to take it in. I'm glad I didn't run into any of those issues. Going from a 12 to a 22 or an 8 to a 14 is ridiculous.

The worst part is they asked me what my dress size was and they said they would order one size up as I was pregnant and not sure what my size would like after...so of course the 14 didn't fit at all, barely covered side boob then I had to pay an extra 250$ for alterations. Like just tell me your sizes run small, you can clearly see I'm not a 12 in your store!!!

You just don't know how this really irks me. I asked to see the sizing chart and figure out based on my waistline, I had to go up in size. In November, me & my BP is going back to DB to order their dresses and I will be looking at that designer's sizing chart too. I read where they ask brides, "What's your street size?", I never heard that term used before, "Street size", smh On the flip side, at DB brides have to pay for alterations.

Exactly what I said when I bought my dress. They are trying to give girls complexes about their weight! I measured in between a 6 and an 8. I wear a size 0 jeans. I told the lady, what the hell will girls who are normal sizes feel when they have to order a size that makes them feel huge.

Totally agree. It's like they want to make us feel fat or something. I don't understand it at all.

I had the same feeling. I'm not plus size in street clothes, but I'm plus size in bridal dresses.

I thought it was ridiculous too. I wear a size 0/1 jean, and I bought a size 4 dress and it's still too big. But, there was no way my big booty was fitting into a size 2! I thought it was weird.

Got my dress at David's but have heard about this "size fiasco" in other companies, too. I'm not letting it affect me but Jeez, gown makers, what are you thinking???

From DB sizing, I am a size 18 or 20. I was not happy, when I normally wear a 14...
