Why do wedding gowns have to run so small??

My dress is a Maggie. I think it runs pretty true to size. But I did try on some that shocked me!

Does it really matter what size the dress is?

No one is going to see the number on the tag anyway.

If a few are appearing bigger before they're british sizing, don't be disheartened.

We start at 6 for crying out loud, a 14/16 is about the average.

So it's not actually a huge jump in sizing. It's just translated. To a size scale that doesn't start at 0.

Ignore those crazy numbers you gorgeous ladies.

(Just felt like putting that out there since I had to ask for sample size 20s... which seemed so big and upsetting to me. But then I remembered "Oh, wait, that's on a size scale that only goes up from 6. Not as bad as I'm making it out to be")

I don't get it either - haven't they ever heard of vanity sizing.

I went though a brief time of temporary insanity where I thought I might buy my gown. (I'm making mine- only sane choice for me)So I tried on a few. in a DB design I was a size 22. couldn't breathe, but they got me in it. I got a back up/costume dress on a clearance at another place that was a size 32! go figure.

Actually, the wedding dress designers are just using normal sizing, and "street clothes" companies use vanity sizing-- that is, they put a smaller size number, like an 8, on items that really measure a 10 or 12. Wedding dresses are cut like sizing in the olden days - its the one day you want your number to be lower! I cut out my size tag in my dress

Depending on the fit of something and style, I run anywhere from a 2 to an 8. If it fits, wear it, who care's what the number is.

For real! I agree 100%. I am a size 12 and had to order a 16, which did not make me feel too awesome. Oh well, no one will know the size but me (and you guys!).

I heard a lot about the sizes running small, but I found the opposite to be true. Maybe it's just something with plus sizes though. In both DB's and Alfred Angelo, I needed a 22 dress. All my pants are a 24 or 26 and my tops I usually wear a 28.

I was expecting this when I ordered, but my dress ended up being the same size I normally wear. Guess it depends on the designer.

Mine was DB was like this. I am usually a 6-8 and my dress is either a 10 or a 12. I don't even remember, so I am not really concerned about the number. I know what you are saying though, you'd like the sizing would be similar to most everything else.

I'm pretty sure it's not the gowns that run small, we just run big. Look into vanity sizing - estimates are that a size 2 now would have likely been a 6-10 30 years ago. Manufacturers made regular clothing smaller over time so women would feel better about themselves and buy more once they realized they went down or didn't go up in size. My guess is that wedding dress designers didn't follow the trend so closely.

I have always thought this was totally ridiculous.

I googled this because I am so upset about my dress size! I lost weight and got down to a size 8 last summer, now am back up to a size 10 and to feel even worse about myself, I am a size 14 dress! Makes me so discouraged. It's David's bridal and I hate how they run so small

Christina Wu bridesmaids dresses are the worst. My smallest girl is a 2 and they were going to have her order a 10 plus $100 in alterations because she is petite. My poor sister recently lost weight and is trying to lose more, has gone from a 26 to 20 this year. She was going to have to order a 32. She balled in the car for an hour after we left.
