Who insures your engagement/wedding ring?

newmrsnechay, on September 7, 2010 at 2:56 PM Posted in Planning 0 22

Just trying to find out if any of you insure your engengement and wedding ring/s through a insurance company who specializes in insuring jewerly (i.e. Jewelers Mutual)or if you have added coverage for it onto your homeowners/renters insurance?

I'd love some feedback about the different agencies/companies all of you are using and how they have been in handling any claims!

I have State Farm. I pay 1% each year of what the total cost of my ring is. NO deductible. They've always been helpful for me with my car insurance. It's also going to vary on who your agent is.

You can usually loop your rings into your homeowner's or renter's insurance. That's what we're planning to do once we get it appraised.

FH took care of insuring the ring (before he would even let me leave the house with it on, Lol) so I don't know the name of the company. But I can tell you that its a separate jewelry insurer, not home/renter's insurance.

We got engaged right as we were moving into a new house so it is currently on our homeowners policy. I've just heard that some policies won't ensure it if its lost or require you to go to their jeweler for a replacement. Since mine is a custom, hand-made setting we started to realize that maybe we should look into a separate jewelery insurer who offers more coverage. Admittingly, I don't know the ins and outs of the policy for the ring but suspect we will have some red tape! The appraisal came back quite a bit higher than he paid for it which is why we are now thinking of doing a separate policy! I just wonder how responive they would be since its not like you have a relationship with them for your other insurance needs! Thanks for the feedback so far!

I'm pretty sure mine is with Jewelers Mutual. I don't have any experience with filing a claim, but FS did say that even in the event that the ring was completely missing, like someone stole it, it would be covered.

We got it through our regular car and renter's insurance company, USAA. We just added "valuable property" insurance for pennies :-)

I only know about State Farm, but if you add it to your homeowners, you have a deductible. If you buy the separate policy (which you can also insure whatever you want-other jewelry, computer, tv, etc) you don't have a deductible.

I also have USAA. I had to get renter's insurance because they wouldn't insure just the ring, but I figure I should have it anyway.

When you purchase your jewelry, you can often buy a policy to insure it. I have a jewelry rider on my homeowners policy that covers mine as well. It's not covered under a typical homeowners/renter's policy without specifcally adding it though. I had a friend find that out the hard way...

It's on our Homeowners Insurance. We add a jewelry rider to our policy for our rings and our watches.

Jewelers Mutual. I researched regular insurance and quite a few jewelry people before I decided to go with them. Home policies have more rules and less chance of getting your ring replaced from what I read. I didn't like having to send them my SSN but they have really good reviews.

State Farm, on its own policy that covers it if I even just misplace it (FS would KILL me if that happened), costing me less 1% of the appraised value a year. I though they would just add it to my renters but my agent told me this was the way to go since it covers loss for any reason. Plus I like having all my policies at the same company- only have to deal with one agent.

I highly recommend anyone who has USAA to add one of their valuable property policies. It only costs me a dollar or two each month and my ring is FULLY covered. If it is stolen, lost, flushed, run over, etc. they will pay to replace what they say is "like cost and quality". They said I can use any jeweler too. They recommended I take a picture of it on my hand and hid it away so that if it gets stolen, I can prove that I really did have it in my possession.

Jewelry is covered under your homeowners (or renters) insurance. Typically, you are covered for $500, but you can increase that amount for a small premium. Do not buy insurance from a company trying to sell you a separate policy. You will be wasting your money.

Contact your insurance agent find out how much automatic coverage you have now, and how much you should add.

USAA is an amazing insurer. I lost jewelry once and field a claim with them. I had to provide pictures and they preferred an appraisal. I happened to have my original and recieved payment within 5 days!

It's very hard to insure the ring by itself/as a stand-alone policy. Easiest to add onto a homeowners' policy. USAA
