White vs. Ivory

Lindsey, on April 23, 2011 at 7:31 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

I've decided I absolutely LOVE Casablanca 1966 for my wedding dress! However, I've only tried it on in ivory (no shop has it in white), and I originally had my heart set on white for my wedding. I've been told either color looks fine with my skin-tone, but I feel like my FH wants (expects?) white. Plus, when trying on other dresses, I feel like white looks crisper and cleaner on me. However, I'm afraid to order such an expensive item in a color I've never seen or tried on in that exact dress! Anyone have advice on white versus ivory, especially with Casablanca? Some of the beads appear to have a yellow-ish tint, and I'm wondering if that's because the sample is in ivory, and wonder if the white will make the beads look more or less yellow-ish. I'm so afraid to order the dress in white, and not be happy with it when it arrives. Too much money and too late to do anything about it then! Help!

There is definitely a difference although without having them side by side it will be hard for you to tell. I tried on a dress at one place and then not realizing it ,found it in the other shade somewhere else and I definitely noticed a difference in the way they looked on me. Can you maybe find a dress shop that has the other color so you can at least try it on?

I've had a hard time finding this dress at many shops, and NONE have it in white. One consultant told me (about another dress) that the designer often sends the dress in the color they think the dress should be in, so they have many in ivory only Smiley sad

Sorry I am not much help but I also ordered a Casablanca dress . I ordered 1906 which also has lots of beading and loved it in ivory on my skin tone. White seems to wash me out

What about another Casablanca gown in white to compare side by side to the ivory? If nothing else, you would be able to see the difference in white/ivory with that particular designer. I went through this recently and there was a significant difference in the two shades. Good luck! That is a stunning dress.

I know that white is the preferred color, but I tried my dress on in ivory and I absolutely loved it! I think it's just a matter of personal preference.

Apparently, about 70% of wedding dresses these days are ivory, not white. The colors are close enough together so your guests (and your FH) will probably not even know which your dress is.

I ordered from Casablanca as well!!! Woohoo for Casa brides! Smiley smile

You can see my skin tone in my pics- although the pics have been lightened. I am fair with freckles and tones of red in my hair...

I tried on white and ivory from Casa... White looked way to bright and out there. The ivory gave it a nice "eye" appeal. From someone who has tried on both I am a total ivory fan! Looks lovely! No one "expects" you to wear white sweetie.. You will look great in either!

My dress is 1914 and has LOTS of beading. It has the old timey lace. It just shipped last week and was ordered the first of December!

Don't worry. The rules are not applicable that you "have" to wear white. In history, brides actually got married in different colors -- as dark as crimson red. Particularly the noble and monarchy brides - golds and pinks and blues mixed with neutral colors! White was out of necessity because of wars and the inability to export good fabrics from other countries!

So you know, there are 300 shades of "white" now. Ivory is considered a white shade, in the white family. So unless you are wearing a darker shade like beige or champagne, ivory will be "white" enough. If you feel you look good in the dress and it matches your skin tone, then get it. Your beau will see it as white (men don't differentiate in shades) - and I am sure you will look lovely, angelic and like a classic and traditional bride.

    Good luck!

    Best!

My dress is ivory and I absolutely love it! It makes my skin tone look so much softer. The "white white" was too stark for me. And as long as there isn't anyone wearing a "WHITE" dress standing next to you, it's not really that obvious that you're wearing ivory. (in my opinion!)

I bought my dress online without trying it on or seeing it in person, & it is ivory. I had seen several pictures & in some it looked practically white. I received it, & love it! Ivory, as many have said, is alot closer to white than people think.

I do have to say, however, that my dress has no beading whatsoever (I purchased a 'sparkly' sash to dress it up) so I understand your concern with whether the true white will make the beads appear discolored. Maybe you can pop into a bridal salon (I know they like appointments, but you won't be trying anything on) & take a peek & see white w/beads vs. ivory w/beads for yourself? Good luck, & remember, it's ultimately not what is expected, but what you like & makes you feel beautiful!!

If it makes you feel better, I asked FH which shade of white he preferred, and he said: "uh..."

He had no idea what the difference between white and ivory are Smiley smile

I ordered a Casablanca (1894) and they didn't have it in my size to try on. However,

Casablanca has a warehouse of dresses to try on. I had to pay $50 for the shipping, got to try the dress on and the $50 came off the price of the dress.

I tried my dress on in white. The salon happened to have it in Ivory too so I tried that on after. Instantly I knew I liked the white better. The beading just sparkled better off the white. It makes a big difference.

As to whether yours is better in white or ivory, you won't know until you try it on. Have you tried bridal salons in nearby towns? An hour drive may be enough to help you get the one you want. Good Luck!

Pick the one you love... I tried on my dress in ivory and LOVED it. Looked at stock photos of it online with white and a silver bow, and it is AWFUL .

The two pics are of me in it minus the mermaid slip to make it fuller on bottom. Third photo is stock. I think it looks like a TOTALLY different dress!

I actually read somewhere that only women can tell the difference between white and ivory without them being side by side. Men have to see white and ivory together to see the difference. I tested this out with my FI and showed him an ivory dress and asked which color he thought it was and he said white. So I don't think your FI will really notice if you decide to wear ivory. But if you're dead set on the white maybe you could order a color sample from the designer?
