Where did you go/where are you going on your honeymoon?

Mrs. Williams, on July 7, 2012 at 1:12 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 35

FH and I originally wanted to go to Bora Bora for our honeymoon. We know we will have enough money saved to go there, but we don't want to use all of your savings on our honeymoon and then come out as newlyweds with no money left in our savings account. We have tried to find all inclusive resorts, but there are so many mixed reviews out there that we don't know what to trust. We have been to Cozumel, Mexico and Nassau in the Bahamas and were hoping to go somewhere different. Where is the best place to go (we want to go somewhere tropical). Pics and anything else that is helpful would be greatly appreciated.

We are going to Now Jade in Cancun. We have never been to Mexico before, so we are really looking forward to it!

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic is also beautiful. I stayed at a resort called Melia Paradisus. It was very pretty! That was about 8 years ago, things do change over that amount of time, but at that time, it was gorgeious!

I would highly recommend a Preferred Club room at Now Jade that Rebecca is going to. We have stayed there, and while it is not AO, it is gorgeous and we would return in a heartbeat. We wished we had gone there instead of SSS.

Excellence Resorts: In Punta Cana: It is on older property and not on the best beach. In Riviera Maya: Excellence Riviera Cancun is also an older property, but worth a look. Last but not least is Excellence Playa Mujeres. It is a bit pricier than a Secrets, but looks to be awesome

Last but not least, here are some AOs that are pricier:

Iberostar Grands(in MX - Paraiso; in PC - Bavaro; in Jamaica - Rose Hall)

    Le Blanc Spa Resort(in Cancun)

El Dorado Maroma(on the best beach)

There are others, but check out Trip Advisor. For Secrets resorts check out Trip Advisor and their FB pages.

My DH & I travel to AIs yearly. We have been to Punta Cana, Jamaica & the Riviera Maya(outside of CUN) MX We went to Secrets Silver Sands for our HM. We absolutely love Secrets brand & Excellence brand resorts. We feel you get the most bang from your travel buck at these AOs than you do at Sandals or Couples resorts(DH was a big Sandals /Couples fan before me)

My first suggestion would be to figure out what you want out of your destination & what are your priorities in a resort. My second suggestion would be to check out Trip Advisor for picts & reviews.

Secrets has resorts in Punta Cana: Secrets Royal Beach that is on a gorgeous streatch of the most perfect beach. From Jamaica: St. James/Wild Orchid.

Secrets has 4 resorts in the Riviera Maya; The Vine(too new); Secrets Capri(lovely hacienda feel); Secrets Maroma(Maroma is top ten of beaches in the world.) & where we went Secrets Silver Sands. The beach has seriously improved at SSS since we have been there.

Lauren - To echo what Carole said, start by figuring out what you want out of your honeymoon (relaxation, romance, fine dining, adventure, culture, etc.) and then think about the type of resort that you'd like (intimate little boutique hotel, larger more active resort, adults only, high-rise, low-rise, etc.). Armed with that information, and some information about your travel preferences (how far you're willing to fly, how long you can be away, preferred budget range, etc.), work with an experienced travel agent to help you come up with some options that suit the two of you.

We are definitely interested in something quiet where we can go to a nice beach. When we were in Cozumel we ended up at this horribly crowded beach where you sunk into the sand like quick sand at the waters edge and then the bottom of the ocean after that was rocks and some sort of plant which wasn't something I was too happy to walk on. The beach in Nassau was gorgeous, but there were locals trying to sell us something everytime we turned around and that was kind of annoying. We love kids and want some of our own someday, but we prefer to be somewhere where no children are present. We have been on two cruises and the biggest thing that gets on my nerves are children who aren't being supervised by their parents at all. We definitely were trying to stay around the $6000 range including flights to wherever we go. Anyways we just want something nice, quiet, and romantic. I will check out all the resorts mentioned.

FH and I are thinking the exact same thing as you. Bora bora is insanely expensive, but we want that same vibe (and not a lot of places in the carribean stack up IMO). So, what we are thinking is eithor Thailand (still exotic, less expensive - I've been but FH has not) or Hawaii (pricey, but still less expensive than Bora Bora). If we go south we're considering Aruba, Antigua, Antilles (apparently the "A's" have the best beaches..or so I've heard) or St. Lucia. Costa Rica is cool too - that's where we got engaged.

Lauren -- at that budget range, in May, you should be able to do Secrets Maroma Beach (one of my faves) or one of the Excellence Resorts in Mexico (Excellence Riviera Cancun or Excellence Playa Mujeres). Also check out the Couples Resorts in Jamaica. If it does not have to be all-inclusive, look at the Bucuti Beach Resort in Aruba (the Tara Suites specifically) - gorgeous beach, adults only, and lots of great local restaurants to enjoy.

I would reiterate the advice to work with a travel professional. It won't cost you any more than doing all the research yourself, and you'll benefit from expert advice and the security of knowing that someone "has your back" while you're traveling.

Ask friends for a recommendation to a good travel agent. Or check the Wedding Wire reviews.

I can't vouch for any AIs but but we've been to Playa del Carmen several times, near many of those resorts in the Riviera Maya, south of Cancun. It's so beautiful there! We usually just book a condo through VRBO and self-cater. We LOVE the small town, the beaches, the beach clubs, restaurants, the fact that we're not fending off timeshare salespeople all day, etc. And there's a lot of fun excursions you can do in that area if you're interested - like seeing/hiking Mayan ruins, caving, waterparks, swimming in cenotes.

Mrs S is on her HM in Aruba right now so I'm sure she'll have lots of good info when she comes back!

I love Aruba!!! It gets my vote!! We go every year and absolutly love it! The weather is always perfect with a nice breeze, there is so much to do and so many amazing places to eat! The island is super safe and there is very convienent public transportation! If you have any Aruba specific questions - I would be happy to help! Smiley smile

Our honeymoon is at Couples Swept Away in Negril, Jamaica. The ONLY reason our honeymoon isn't in Aruba is because our wedding is in Aruba and we wouldn't be able to get away from our families! Smiley smile

Annie P- .I 2nd your advice on doing it via a pro. I like to research it myself, but book qw/ a pro. Usually I give my "book special occasions with a travel agent" and "buy cancel for any reason travel insurance" speech, but I left it out.

Lauren...I always book w/ someone that does high volume of a particular resort I am interested in. If they have a great relationship w/ a great rep on the property, it means perks for you. I also echo Annie P's choice in Secrets Maroma(only Preferred Club Ocean Front) & the Excellence Playa Mujeres(roof top terrace suites). I would also recommend El Dorado Maroma. All are AI and AO & both Maromas are on gorgeous beaches. W/ your budget you can not only go there, but will have plenty to spend on excursions. If you need a rec for a travel agent, shoot me a pm. Or, go through Annie P. She has always been very helpful on these forums. I love the vendors that actually are helpful w/advice in their respective fields. They are priceless.

My hubby and I just got back from Couples Tower Isle (located in Ocho Rios, Jamaica). We absolutely LOVED it. I want to go back in five years. It is a smaller resort with only 226 rooms so there was barely any competition to get spots at the pool, swim-up pool, or beach. The resort has its own private beach so only people staying at the resort occupy it.

We spent majority of our time at the beach since we do not live near the ocean. The beach has flag service so all you have to do is put a flag in the ground and someone comes and takes your food or drink order.

The staff was WONDERFUL and GREAT. During dinner they would top off your water even if you only had two sips. My water glass was rarely empty. They also constantly asked if you needed anything but not in the annoying way. The resort is typically a no-tipping resort however my hubby and I threw tips every now and then. But get this!!! Some workers refused to take tips because it was their pleasure to serve us...WHAT?!

Can you imagine this happening in the states?

Also did I mention that it is for adults only, couples only. It was nice because you had no one running around trying to hook-up.

Food was delicious. I'm pretty sure I put on five pounds. I've attached the Monday night cookout. The resorts put this super large buffet out on the beach with tons of food choices. After they are done serving they put some entertainment on afterwards.

My husband has been to resort in Mexico and he said comparing the two, Couples killed the other one with their services.

Ok, I could go on and on about this resort. Feel free to pm if you want more info.

I will attach some pics for you.
