What white wines did you have for your wedding?

ALH, on December 17, 2015 at 9:27 AM Posted in Planning 0 45

FH and I are currently doing research on white wines to have for our wedding and have kind of come to a impasse.. we aren't very knowledgeable about wines. Therefore, I come to all of your for your help-- we are looking for a wine to have with Chicken Parmesan and Crab Stuffed Tilapia (wedding dinner) and are hoping for something that's not too sweet/dry. So, what white wine did you have for your wedding?

I always like a good Pinot Grigio. Chardonnay is too dry for me and I love Riesling/Moscato but those are REALLY sweet. Pinot is a good compromise I think.

We made Sauvignon Blanc, but that's pretty sweet. I would suggest a Riesling or Pinot Grigio since they (I think) are pretty in between.

We had an Italian Pinot Grigio (Bolla, I think). A close second was a Chardonnay.

We have tried moscatos and they were too sweet. We've also tried riesling and there was one from covey run but we know like nothing about wine so we don't know whether anyone else would like it. Also, we are probably just doing this wine, and then beer for everyone else. FYI.

You can't go wrong with a Pinot Grigio. I would stay away from anything classified a s a dessert wine. And please, please don't go with White Zin...I don't even consider that wine...it's fruit juiceSmiley smile

Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris (they don't clobber you over the head with oak and alcohol) - blends can be nice too (50/50 Pinot Blanc and Pinot Grigio is my favorite for white). Chardonnays are traditional white served with fish if that helps. Roussanne is nice - full bodied and usually citrus notes.

Moscatos, Rieslings are way, way sweet. Gewürztraminer is just as sweet but an have a spicy after notes and pairs really well w/ spicy food.

We had a freshly bottled Chardonnay from our winery. It was delicious. It's also MIL's fave wine which is why I chose it. I was considering a pinot grigio because that's my favorite white, but we chose to do more red options than white options since we prefer red and it was October.

We had pinot grigio for our white wine. I would serve a red with chicken parm - maybe a pinot noir or a cab sauv. We had steak and seafood paella so I served a drier red, carmenere.

OK since pinot grigio is a popular choice, what are the best brands? Or years?

I'm a big fan of blends, so we did Apothic blended red and Apothic blended white, both of which are always a huge hit whenever I introduce them to people. They're flavorful but light. However, for people who want a bit more kick to the flavor of their wine I had an oaky chardonnay and a cab.

    Pinot or Sauv Blanc.

I would start with what your price point is and select a brand from there.

Riesling is a great white wine or pinot.

In Central NY we have Niagara wine which is perfect for summer time with it being so sweet. I'm sure it's offered in other areas, but I've only seen it here. It's worth checking out!

Is Covey Run Riesling any good? That's what we've tried and we like it but we're wine n00bs and are afraid everyone will say it sucks.

Are you on a budget? If so, I would say Barefoot Pinot Grigio is good and reasonably priced. Plus, you will get discounts for buying 6 at a time (usually 10%). Not sure about going with higher priced ones or even lower. I just know that's a decent grocery store one Smiley smile

I agree with either a Pinot Grigio or Sauv Blanc (we went with Sauv). As far as brands/years, are you able to purchase and bring your own alcohol, or is it provided by the venue/catering? We're getting ours from BevMo and basically chose whatever wine is on their 5cent list to cut costs. They also let us have a wine tasting to see which ones we liked.

Catherine: We have to bring in all our own alcohol because the B&B does not have a liquor license. So any alcohol we have, we have to purchase/bring it in.

Definitely support getting a Pinot Grigio! I'm someone who likes dry wines and doesn't like sweet wines, so I'm definitely a fan of Chardonnays and Pinots. Also good are Sauvignon Blancs, but they do tend to be drier than Pinot Grigios. I really don't like Reislings, Moscatos, Ice Wines, etc.

As far as brands, Barefoot is a great budget option, like Pancakes said. Stellina di Notte is a good Pinot Grigio, but I don't know what it's price point is. Santa Margherita is a great one as well, but it's definitely pricier.

We will have to purchase around 7 bottles of wine so I can spend around $150 on it all.

ETA: We are also purchasing beer so no worries that anyone will go without! My family is more beer drinkers and FH's are split between beer and wine.

I second Barefoot. We bought magnums of Frontera. They were very reasonably priced (around $13 for a magnum) and we got a 20% discount for buying 3 cases.
