What to write on the wedding cake??

Annie, on October 20, 2014 at 9:04 AM Posted in Planning 0 15

Since FH really wants a sheet cake from our favorite bakery (he doesn't like fondant and the whole "wedding stack cake" look...he was VERY specific about this), I made a cake topper out of Fimo/Sculpy (rainbow unicorn on the field with a brown bear) to put on this sheet cake.

Being a 10lb sheet cake, we'll need to put some text on it to fill the vast landscape of blank space! There'll be dipped strawberries around the border and the obligatory whipped cream swirls, but what should be in the center...

Like "CONGRATULATIONS XX & YY!" or just simple "XX & YY forever"? Or should I leave it blank and just ask the baker to decorate the rest of the cake with various colors of creams and candy toppers.

It's really hard trying to make it look less like a graduation cake. Help!

I personally would not write on it because that seems strange to me.

I really would not write anything on it. If I had to, I would go with Best Wishes to break of the graduation feel. Is this the cake you're going to cut?

Yea, I would skip writing on it. Unless it said "Happy New Husband & Wife Day"

^^^ yes, do that. MUCH better. You can use pretty cake stands to stagger and arrange round cakes. They don't have to be stacked.

What about adding some flowers around the cake topper?

    I also like @Ashley suggestion.

I like the idea of separated tiers too!

Sheet cakes are usually kept in the back just for cutting and serving, with a small cake on "display" for cutting. I'd do something like that and write nothing on it. It's just cake, but sheet cakes, while just as delicious, aren't very wedding-y. I like the pic Ashley posted. No fondant needed (even if you did do tiers).

And you could do separate square cakes as well if you dont like rounds!

"Happy new Husband and Wife Day" haha. I may take that to FH for consideration.

Ashley's idea is great too! I wish I can do that, but FH is very adamant about the sheet cake idea (I got my tacky e-shoot concept so he gets to have his strawberry rhubarb sheet cake with colorful frostings and dipped strawberries... also we can't beat the $65 for 4.8KG price either!!)

I made a super huge cake topper to try to fill the space. Cake toppers are usually 3-4" tall but our sculpture is close to 7" and our arch is 13" dia. Maybe like Ashley's picture I'll make a themed cake stand if I have some time next weekend to "class up" the cake.

If you plan to stick with the sheet cake, you can google "wedding sheet cake decorating ideas," and lots of different images come up that might help you out.

I also like the single round tiers on cake stands. We are pretty much doing the same thing. We will have 3 cakes, 2 of them will be single tiers and one of them will be a double tier cake. I bought white milk glass cake stands, so they will all sit at different heights. Such an effect will look much more bridal while being much less expensive than the traditional multi-tiered cake.

I can't think of anything that would look right written out on a wedding cake. What if you had some type of other toppers on both sides of your big one, to balance the cake?

Maybe put your favorite love quote on it? If it was cute and long enough it would fill the space and not look like a graduation/birthday cake.

I'd also be concerned that the cake won't hold the topper up...you may want to get a small cake at home to test. I had one of those standard "couple" toppers and it fell off our cake because it was too heavy. There's not much to a sheet cake to hold up anything heavy.

During the detail finalizing moments of our wedding, between our "surprise guests" who pulled the "You didn't know our family's flying in from XXX? We're planning to spend our vacations on your big day!!" and "XXX thought they could crash at your house!" when we live in a city apartment... our originally very diligent budget shot through the roof and the cake is one aspect FH just said "No $500 cakes - Who cares what others think wedding cakes should look like, all I want is a Spiderman cake!"

I'm completely OK with that decision, but if I don't write something on that canvas I will need to give another idea to the baker. Smiley sad

@ Stephanie: I was worried about that too, so the topper animals are all in seated position (nothing top-heavy) and I made a flat platform the characters rest on to avoid any shifting on the icing. I've also bustled the arch. It'll only get put in just before the cake cutting, so it should be fine.

I looked up "colorful wedding sheet cake" on Google and results were all birthday cakes for 5-year-olds LOL I should switch up the search terms!
