What is considered formal attire for a wedding?

Kimber, on May 23, 2019 at 2:15 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

I thought I knew the answer, but each person I ask has a different opinion. Floor length only, or knee length ok? Florals, yes or hell no? Thoughts?

To me formal would mean floor length only! Semi-formal would be knee length.

To me it is any kind of dress, knee length or long, and suit and tie. No jeans, khakis, skirts ect. Floral is fine.

If it doesn’t explicitly say black tie I wouldn’t assume only long dresses. I consider formal to be like black tie optional and a non long dress that’s on the fancier side would be okay.

To me, black tie means a floor length gown and tux. Formal depends on time of day, but could include shorter dresses. Nicer than normal church clothes. And a suit and tie. Semi-formal could include a nice jumpsuit or pants suit for a woman, or knee length or high low dress. Cocktail attire for evening. Slacks required, not necessarily a jacket and tie. A *nice* sundress could maybe fly, with the right shoes and accessories.

Late night formal and daytime formal are different. Neither is floral, you'd be solid colors only.
Late night formal is black or navy suits with ties and floor length dresses.
Daytime formal is knee length dresses and suits can be light colors.
    No sneakers, hosery.
You'll get some variation on this but honestly everyone will know formal is look really good.

I consider formal jackets and ties for the men, and dresses for the women, doesn’t matter the length. Basically don’t be in jeans and a T-shirt and maybe a little nicer than khakis

To me, formal is a dress that's not a "sundress," a shirt and tie, no jeans or khakis, dress shoes, etc.

Black Tie to me means floor length gown, tuxedo (or at least a shirt and tie with matching slacks & jacket).

I said formal for attire as well. I think that means a dress / suit. I don’t mind if it’s knee length or not, but I would assume that’s what formal would mean.

If we were invited to a formal wedding, I'd wear a floor length dress. I think florals are fine as long as the dress itself is nice enough and not super causal.

Formal means suit and long dress or fancy cocktail dress. I think formal means suit with jacket and tie. Depending on the time of year, formal can mean darker colors (fall/winter).

Thanks all! Definitely a challenge. Realizing so many factors can play into it. Time of day, indoor/outdoor, season, setting, etc. For this wedding I'm attending it's mid-day ceremony, evening reception, in the summer though indoors. So many things to consider! Providing me some things to consider for my own wedding where I think dresses and suits are fine (length and tie/no tie doesn't matter).

Floor length only to me. Florals are okay as long as it looks formal.

I associate formal and semi formal with school dances. Formal is like prom, where you wouldn't wear a short dress, and semi formal is like homecoming, where you wouldn't wear a long gown. Men need at least slack, button up, and tie. Formal may require a jacket depending on season and time of day.
