What do you do to your hair, how often, & how much does it cost? UPDATE pg6

I want to get a lot of input on this so I can really know if I’m being reasonable or not. FH and I are trying to save more because we want to buy a house when we get married, and he will probably need a new truck by then. We’ve been looking at our budget to see what areas have excess spending. He thinks I spend too much on my hair, but I do not want cut back on going to the salon. I get partial highlights and an eyebrow wax for $100(after tip) every 8-9 weeks, so 6 salon trips per year. I use cheap shampoo and conditioner and don’t wear any makeup so my annual beauty budget is probably less than $700. I don’t think I'm spending too much, but what do you think? How much do you on yourself?

I get my hair cut once every six months for $50 (including tip). At the salon, I purchase a leave-in conditioner for $25 that lasts until I get my hair cut again and keeps it smooth (I had a frizz problem). No dye, no waxing, minimal upkeep.

@P.F. I also used to use Main and Tail until my hair became brittle. Now I alternate between Tresemme, Herbal Essences and Garnier Fructis because my stylist said if I use the same cheap shampoo for too long my hair will develop a build up. FH couldn’t care less if he actually looks good when he walks out of salon he just doesn’t want to come out bloody! He had his ear and the back of his neck gouged pretty bad this year. He used to always get a trim before he came home so he would look good, but now he waits until he’s home and goes to the local place. I also second Shelbob, regardless of how fast something is supposed to expire, as long as it isn’t becoming discolored, changing consistency/texture, or developing an odor I’ll still use it.

@Shelbob I know what you mean about it being hard to find a stylist that doesn’t think they know better than you how you want your hair to look! It’s my hair, I want it long, all one length, and split at its natural part. When I’ve tried new places they want to do layers, a dramatic side part, a bolder color, or whatever and I’m like NO! This woman actually did my mom’s hair when I was little, so when I wanted to start coloring my hair I looked her up. She is pretty expensive for my area but she knows exactly what my hair used to look like so I feel like she’s the only one that can trust to give me the natural look I’m going for.

    LMAO at this whole thread.

He is riding your ass about your hair bill and he wants to buy a new truck?

Ultimately no one can tell you how to spend your money. I'm part of a mustachian group (Mr.Money Mustache- which is about uber frugality, DIY and environmentally friendly options)

They would tell you that is outrageous. I would tell you- if it's your time to treat yourself and splurge- then it's fine.

Ultimately- If you aren't saving fast enough to meet your goals and you care then it's too much. If you don't care- then whatever.

But- really in all that- I'd tell him to go sit and rotate if he was buying a new truck. Such a huge waste of money.

This post just reminded me that I haven't had my hair cut in 6 months. Ooops.

That should tell you how much I spend on hair care....

@shelob, I guess makeup is the only product that I use so little of that it would last past expiration date. Huh. The more you know.

Those names don't sound familiar so I'm not sure we have them. But good shampoo makes the world of difference!

@WooPigSooie, I never had a stylist actually say anything to me about my product. Now I wonder if I should switch things up.

Ouch!! That's awful! Your poor FH! I don't blame him for being indifferent to how it looks if all he's worried about is walking away in one piece.

Well the makeup is the oldest thing I have and it looks and feels the same to me so I guess I'm good to go Smiley smile thanks for the friendly tip

Make up products: Liquids generally should be thrown away when they change texture or start to smell- they will go faster than a powder- and mascara should be thrown away ever three months regardless.

Powders usually can be sanitized with alcohol- so unless you have issues with them- use them as long as you want.

@JoRocka I don’t think I worded my original post well. He’s not riding my ass about this at all, we were just going through each other’s spending together to look for where we are spending wasteful amounts of money. Like we have discovered I buy way too many fast food ice cream treats, and he buys entirely too many things for his friends. This is such a huge portion of my budget that he thought it would be easy to spend less. I showed him this post after day one and he realized $700.00 a year isn’t unreasonable. At this point he’s snickering at me that I’m still on here but I’m not about to hide the discussion, because where’s the fun in that? Also I should’ve been clearer but when I say new truck I mean new to us, we always buy used. Vehicles are as much a joint purchase for us as a house because I have one that is practical for us in town and he has a work truck for when we go out to my rural property. He also drives about 80,000 miles a year for work so he wears trucks out fast, and no truck=no job so it’s important and I want him to be able to afford a nice one.

I mean- ultimately it's all on how you chose to spend your coin.

Usually financing a truck for a "few times a year" event- it's worth it. Unless your paying cash under 10K for it- I wouldn't bother... but- dat's none of my business.

Being said your post still isn't clear. is the truck for your "rural property" or for his job?

It's for his job, as a bonus to me I get to use it on my rural property and he gets to use my C-RV in town. He gave me $4,200 towards the $15,700 it cost. He has historically been awful with money been is doing so much better since we started looking at our finances together.

Response to WTF thread questions: FH and I have a system for our finances that works perfectly for us. We do everything based on percentages. He makes 3 times as much as me so I pay 25% of our joint expenses and he pays 75% so we are both spending roughly the same percentage of our income on those things. We are on track to buy a starter home when we get married but more money means more house which we both want. We also both put 10% of our net pay each check into our joint savings so when you get down to it most of “our” savings are his. The rest of our money is ours to do whatever we want with. We like going through our individual spending together. I think because we are both more honest with each other than we are with ourselves. He noticed I spend a lot on my hair and maybe I should cut back on that expense. That got me wondering if I am spending too much so I asked what y’all spend. Based on your responses I’m not cutting back, and I shared them with FH and he no longer thinks I’m spending a lot in this category. Even if he still thought I was he would never tell me I had to start spending less. FH does NEED a truck, he is a sign hanger and has to be able to transport the signs and tools. His current truck was given to him by his boss and technically belongs to the company. They do not provide employees with vehicles. They gave him special treatment because of extenuating circumstances, but it won’t happen again.

I think that's reasonable to feel pretty. But you might want to stock up on good conditioners to keep your locks looking their best!

I was never big into hair and beauty. I was hardcore into dyeing my hair for a while but always used box. Now I met a friend who does hair also so I have her do mine. I got highlights for $40 and I'll have her cut it probably every 3 months - $20. I tip her well though. I like the Suave professionals products for my hair, so I never really splurge on that and I bite the shit out of my nails so needless to say they don't get done. I do spend $60 a month to get a massage though, haha. I think if you can afford your routines and enjoy them, then keep it up. Maybe cut down the times you go by 1 or 2.

I have never felt so high mantainance. Of course, I'm old and would be grey, which makes a huge difference.

Base color -- ~$65 including tip -- every 3 weeks.

Cut -- another $40 or so -- every 6 weeks.

Partial highlights -- another $40 -- about every 12 weeks?

(As if being old didn't suck enough!)

My FH shaves his head, uses axe body wash and deodorant, that's it for his beauty routine. Lmao I'm not even going to try to pretend that he'll get it if I explain beauty costs. I've also spent entirely too much money at Sephora lately, but that's Wedding me... regular me is much more frugal. I don't think your expenses are extraordinary. And while cutting back at times helps temporarily, this isn't a make or break thing. Glad you guys worked it out and he seems to get it.
